I can't tell you how fortuitous it is that you posted this, I was literally just looking for an edition of this! I had actually been considering the folio society one but after seeing this I'm pretty well sold. Thanks as always and I hope everything is good (as can be expected)where you are.❤
This is a little late & about a previous video but I had to say thank you for bringing up Tachen books library of esoterica editions. I purchased the witchcraft book and will get it in April. It was that or the tarot. Might get the tarot at a later date because i really wanted both. I'm very excited & have you to thank! Thank you for your time, energy & content! XX
Absolutely loved the part where you said "in man form...AND in donkey form." Perfect delivery. I've heard of this book before but have not read. Will have to check it out. Thanks as always.
Oh this is wonderful! I had the pleasure of translating The Golden Ass for one of my Latin courses in Uni. I would love to have a proper hardcover edition!
I think you'll find The Satyricon by Petronius is another 'roman novel' of some occult significance... And don't forget the Robert Graves translation of the Asse which is readable with some notable scholarship, esp. in regards to 'our lady Isis'. Both are translated in the LOEB series.
Very interesting. I remember reading seven years ago that Carlo Collodi who originally wrote Pinocchio was inspired in part by this book, especially with Pinocchio and the run away boys being turned into donkeys. Carlo being a Freemason himself according to wiki I believe said The Golden Asse was required reading amongst the Freemasons in the group he was in. Thank you very much for giving us a beautifully illustrated overview of this book 📚👍.
@@FoolishFishBooks Indeed 🙏. Over time I noticed Pinocchio really resembled the archetype of the Tarot Decks Fool and Jiminy cricket is the white dog by his side. It wouldn’t surprise me if that was Carlos intention to do that as well.
I loved this video so much that........I bought this very version and it's glorious! The art is very beautiful and of its time. My only correction of your review is when the original was written.....it was written between 158 AD and 180 AD....not 1024 AD....
Hahaha! Thank you, I just re-watched the intro, and she enough I say 1024 AD instead of 124 AD, which is clearly written on the page I turn to. Sorry about that! Brain and mouth not connecting 😂
the book was written between 140 -170 AD

The Prometheus Trust edition of the Thomas Taylor (more recent) translation is worth a look too.
And yes, thank you for asking, we have a large increase in population, but people are generally in strong and also helpful spirits. 😊🙏

@@FoolishFishBooks haha so childish haha
It’s the witches 3:06 assistant Fotis that transforms Lucius into an ass not Pamphile the witch.
Best translation by far is the Robert Graves book.
The art looks a little Japanese at times, like old Japanese Sumo portraits..with a little greek..
Right! That woodblock print look. Really gorgeous stuff!
My bae has one of those 😆
;)
2:28 Oh, shi**e, my Lord - I see a sky full of CoVs in this picture!
