Think about this. The American drone watched them get ready, form up, get in position, and begin shooting. You heard them say that B-52 Heavy Bombers hit the Russians. It takes about 6 HOURS to prepare, load, fuel, brief the crew, and then take off. As the Russians were "playing army", the Americans were picking targets. ALL those pilots, with their bomb filled airplanes, were just circling. Waiting for the Russians to fuck up. We did the Iranian Navy the same way in 88. Really funny guy, but raw.

Those 2 Russian fighters that were rumored to ask for permission to take off and engage was more then likely not true at all. The u.s. fighters were already in the air in case that sort of thing happened and that would had went very bad for Russia sending you their fighters to get involved
The pilots probably figured they could take the American fighter jets on and win but we know that it wouldn't have been like that and so did the higher ups of the Russian command.
