The thing people offently confuse is the difference between a boss and a leader. A boss is the one who wants to be in front, orders around, acts tough. However, a leader is the one who pushes the team to the front while carrying them, who motivates them while doing most of the job in silent so that they can advance further. And that's the difference, that's Lionel Messi.
@jivalette Still remember the 8-2 loss vs Bayern in 2020. It was the worst Barcelona team I have seen in my lifetime. Many sports journalists and pundits proclaimed it's high time for Messi to retire and he can't perform well without Xavi and Iniesta. Little did they know what was about to happen after that. Messi stayed with Barca fully knowing that it was a drowning ship and gave his all to win amist all problems in club(Batholemu). Even God was baffled to see Messi's selfless dedication and knew this Barca do not deserve Messi. This is not the right place for Messi. Out of the blue, Messi who wanted to finish his career at Barcelona was left with no choice but move to PSG which shocked football world. He had very limited role to do there as it's 99% sure that they're going to win Ligue1. That move helped Messi mentally and physically. Unlike in Barcelona, Messi was not supposed to carry PSG on his shoulders. Not only did he get enough rest, but also got accustomed to a new footballing culture, new life and learned how to handle more physicality in Ligue 1 at his age which made him grow as a better footballer though it cannot be measured by any statistics. Unlike in the last years in Barcelona where he had to create and finish chances all by himself players like Mbappe and Neymar helped Messi concentrate more on playmaking, improve his passing skills and excel more in controlling the tempo of the game. The tension relieved, fully rested Messi was able to use a lion share of time in PSG to concentrate for Argentina national football team and the world cup in Qatar. And at last , it feels everything is scripted for him.
Feels like it's SCRIPTED for him to win this tournament in USA 8 years after that final vs Chile here. I always wonder what would have happened if Messi NEVER returned to the national team when he announced retirement after that final in USA in 2016.(coincidence). Messi getting injured and being substituted is a SIGN for Messi and Argentina that THIS is the RIGHT time to hang his boots. What a fairytale ending to a glorious career. Messi's tears after being substituted in this game shows us that his desire to win and love for football after achieving everything has NOT shrunk a bit. The ones who wrote this script made him SUFFER not once but 3 times in 3 years but against all odds he REDEEMED himself, he transformed himself into a leader and all those hardships and sufferings made him stronger and even more that even the ones controlling from heaven had no choice but bow down to his overwhelming desire to win a trophy for Argentina The story of Messi- The most DECORATED footballer of all time teaches everyone that initial failures and sufferings make success even more SWEETER and never give up your desire to succeed and being HUMBLE and innocent at the same time.
The fact that Messi retired and people always mocked that he never won an international competition. Then he comes back and shuts the haters up by winning a World Cup and two Copa Americas. He definitely enjoyed ramming that fact down his critics throats. He is a fantastic leader and loved by the majority of players he played with.
I truly love the fact that Messi can tell his haters to go to hell. I'm surprised that he lasted so long as an Argentine citizen. I would've renounced my citizenship long ago and stayed in Spain. Messi was a gift from God for Argentina. And they treated him so badly for so many years. Maradona included. Messi overcame so much adversity in his life and as a single person, he never owed Argentina anything - NOTHING. Of course, everyone in Argentina loves him now since he helped bring home the World Cup. But they are not true fans. True fans love their players through wins and losses; especially losses. True fans are like family. You don't throw out your brother/sister/child over a sport that involves a whole team.
@@golfhound You cannot renounce to Argentine citizenship, it's not allowed like in another countries, so you end up being Argentine till you die (In fact, I'm Argentine citizen). He could have played for Spain, yes, but he never wanted that because he doesn't feel spaniard. It's true that mainly the argentine media criticized him a lot and expected him to carry the entire team on his shoulders. Mainly because they couldn't believe that by having the best player in the world, we weren't winning any trophy, just like he was doing in Barcelona. It was clear that the issue wasn't his fault but another one (the football manager and competition between the players). However, many people still supported him. His perseverance, despite all the critics he received, is an incredible lesson for many people to not giving up. His perseverance, a team that plays together and a supportive football manager, were the reasons for all the victories he achieved later with the national team.
What Messi accomplished in the 2022 World Cup was phenomenal: he played every minute of every match. He made sublime passes and indescribable moves and critical goals. The pressure upon him was incalculable, and he responded. That's leadership at its best. Thank you for this excellent video.
A little sidenote that didn't appear in the video. After the 2016 Copa, he retired by saying "it was 4 finals, it wasn't for me". Many assume that he meant that by going out of the picture, Argentina would perform with less pressure. Many may have seen the video where they burn his shirt on Rosario's monument, but there was also a country and even worldwide support for him to change his mind. He came back because in his words "he wanted to set an example to the kids that followed him to keep trying". During that time that Messi wasn't playing, Argentina was about to not qualify for the World Cup, and thanks to a hattrick by him in the last match, Argentina went to the 2018 World Cup. Also during the final match against Nigeria, you can see him going to defend the ball all in an effort to not exit in the group stage, something that to this day he never did for both club and country. He is in my opinion the greatest player ever
@@alwimohamedtaha752No, Portugal was in the football map long before CR7, by Eusebio, Figo, Deco. Btw, though I think Messi is the GOAT, no hate for CR7. He was the only one who got close to Messi.
For me Messi had already cemented himself as the GOAT without winning a title for Argentina. Because a title is the result of the best team and Messi consistently has always been the best player for club and country. Theres different ways to be a leader. Messi is so revered and idolized that he doesnt need to scream or shout to be heard. A mere glance or look of approval is all it takes. His teammates love him so much they would fight to the death for him. The greatest of all time.
He has always been a great leader. Its just the narrative that changed.. messis leadership is even in his gameplay.. Observe who asks for the ball dropping to deep midfield when nothing creative is happening.. who takes the responsibility.. who wants to put some pace to the attack. He has always in every match taken that responsibility upon himself But for PR driven and less conginitively astute social media there needs clips like these
Exactly what I thought. Whoever says that Leo is not a leader has the need to downplay him (Maradona and Pele so that they can keep the GOAT status P.S they obviously didn't LOL) or is either a baboon who thinks that being a leader means yelling a lot and waving your hands around when things aren't going well.
@@user-dj7xq1qh9e Exactly bro. Or even if they are from the yelling kind at least make it meaningful when you yell. Kids in front of the TV see the most outgoing and aggressive footballer and they go “Oh yeah, that’s their leader”. Which is okay if you’re a child but the amount of ridiculous comments makes me think that it’s not only the kids who see it through the primitive lenses.
Scaloni is a great leader as well, he understood that the problem relied on the dependency the team had on Messi so he took it upon himself to make the team play well even without Messi and then, and only then, having Messi give the team that extra that only he could.
An important detail, about the moment Messi "retired" from the national team, due to the negative press and more, many children asked him not to resign, among those children, there was one in particular, whose letter reached Messi, and made him come back. That Child is none other than Enzo Fernandez, today a teammate of the national team and current scorer of the Copa America.
The letter from Enzo is totally true..as argentinian everyone knows that story . You can see a few interviews of Enzo and leo talking about it. @@Asssaaerrrff
the truth is if maradona was alive, he would say something negative about meesi even after winning the world cup. both pele and maradona were great as footballer, but the exact opposite as human in behaviors.
nah, Maradona loved Messi, but it was common knowledge that at the beginning of his career Messi was very shy get very nervous before games, he confessed he used to throw up before importan matches
leadership is about inspiring other to follow you though respect, experience and guidance..., this is exactly what Messi does. By definition, Messi is a true leader.
Messi has always been a leader. Leadership is not through words. Words are only a tool to make people feel the way they need to feel. Another tool is to create the attack in whatever game he's playing. Make people trust you on the pitch, just like you make people trust you with words. But it's the same either way. It's just personality
@@biterlombi3508 no kid the goat is the all time top scorer not the player with the most world cup penalties awarded ever untill no one outscores Ronaldo there is only one goat on this planet!!! ain’t no trophy going to change that!!!🤫
No one comes near to Lionel Messi!!!! Mbappe couldn’t tie Messi’s boots at Messi’s prime at a similar age ……..at twenty five he was a multiple Balon d’ors winner and a multiple Champions League winner and so much more!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
He’s a true leader. Leads by example, stoic, stays out of problems and defends people when necessary. His word means everything. When he speaks people listen.
Messi a great leader. 2 copa and 1 fifa wc is proof of his leadership. This argentina team is something different. They used to play like there is no tomorrow.
Yes and I think those two Icon Pele and Maradona held him back by using different approach to encourage him. They had to speak when he fails but when he do good they should also praise but they saw he do something but praise comes after discouraging him. 😢 But now we know they were the one holding him back in nationals
He's such an inspiring example of constancy, persistance, companionship, love for his homeland and passion for the beautiful game that got him to the top with the National team. He'll always be the GOAT❤!
Not only the GOAT, but also the greatest captain of all time, I have never seen a player bring people so much, everytime you see Argentina and Messi on the team, it's like they're ready to give it all just for him.
When I see interviews by him as a kid, then I would say he alredy had a strong charakter back then, just by how he answerd. Just because he is humble and not on the extrovert side of the coin, this doesnt mean he cant be a leader.
He is the greatest leader in football. The fact that he is the ONLY player in history that NEVER grouped in his entire career, proved how much he elevates the team. Any team would automatically become the fave with him on the field. Nobody comes close.
As an argentinian born in 87 i already knew messi was the goat just with his achievements in barcelona even if he didnt have a world cup. But i did see him suffer throughout his international career and watching him win the copa america twice and the world cup was just a sight of relief and further solidifying his goat status in an era filled with high talents like c ronaldo
The reasons you people believe that introverts or reserved people are not natural born leaders is because they don't like to take the spotlight. But that's far from the truth. And introverted person can be born a natural leader but they mostly do their leadership from the background. Finally, an introvert naturally has most of the qualities of a good leader except maybe ego.
@@ghrayo your definition of a natural leader is subjective, not a fact. While I respect your view, I believe charisma is just one aspect of leadership, not the most important. Personally, I value capability over charisma, and I think most people would agree.

Wow! What a eulogy! Every bit is absolute truth. And it doesn't take a genius to see it. All you have to do is keep your eyes open and enjoy it. Other players have been great goal scorers, or great passers, or great speedsters, or great free kick shooters, or great dribblers. As you stated, he does all those things and many others nobody else has been able to do.
First of all I would like to congratulate the young gentleman who made this video, it requires lot of time and dedication. Secondly, Messi always has been a great leader, an amazing inspiration for making people to believe in themselves, to believe in their dreams and never give up. I do feel blessed living in his legacy as a leader with the ball and above all as a mentor, it is such a perfect example not only on the pitch but in people’s life also. I have watched hundreds of videos with him and I still doing it, it is a pleasure for human eyes watching him. Thank you very much Leo Messi for your incredible career which obviously won’t be matched for a long, long time
I really don't know the beautiful game will be beautiful or not for me after Messi's retirement. I would definitely miss those magical sleepless nights. My GOAT forever. ❤
Beautiful video thank you so much and for your question Messi did not need the silverware to be considered the greatest of all time he was already the greatest of all time he will never be repeated in a 100 year🐐🇦🇷❤️
I don't think you NEED experts to tell you he's a great leader lol. People who follow football have always known he often leads by example rather than being vocal

He did need to win something with Argentina to shut his critics up. The people that can see that he’s a phenomenon knew he was as good as anyone that’s ever played the game and all the titles with Barca proved it but to give even his most ardent detractors no chance anymore to doubt the many claims that he is the greatest ever, he had to win with Argentina and truthfully, it needed to be the World Cup. Winning the Copa finally, released some pressure off the haters but when he took apart Italy and then led like an absolute force of nature in that World Cup at 35(his teammates were the engine, he was the creativity and end product via goals or assists) and his last chance at doing it, there really could be no more denying that he is the most decorated footballer in history whilst being the greatest dribbler, greatest passer greatest assists and greatest scorer in history. Yes Ronaldo has more goals but he’s played more and that is pretty much all he has more than Messi that is important in a debate about GOAT status, Messi is the chosen one and it can’t be disputed. He’s been in 8 finals, Argentina wouldn’t have gotten to one of those finals without him and without him, wouldn’t have won one of the finals they did win, without him. Many times, Without Messi, they wouldn’t have even qualified for the tournaments, he’s had to do so many rescue jobs on Argentina qualifications, it is truly remarkable. With the exception of Pele, other all time greats won and lost a World Cup final, Ronaldo, Zidane, Maradona, it’s just the way it goes. His trophy cabinet say’s he’s the best, his statistics say he’s the best, his genius say’s he is the best and the combination of everything ensures that he’s the best ever.
@@SW-fn7cl yeah man it’s true. But he was the best player for any and every team and league he’s played in and for. Even at PSG with all of that talent around him, he was head and shoulders better than anyone else in the team and the league. You see, there is huge feeling I have every time I see Leo on the internet or in the TV: happiness. Watching him makes me happy, literally. Only true leaders irradiates that kind of aura.
One thing you have not mentioned but we can arguably add: Argentinians are naturally moved by humble people. Humility is a HUGE factor in our mindsets and we feel most comfortable following a humble yet capable leader, more so than following a capable yet egocentric leader. It's a very deep emotion rooted in a country that knows scarcity and difficulties. A leader that has been through difficulty, touched the sky, and became the greatest, being humble? That's what we love.
@@Culer9605 We tend to say a lot "Let Diego play ball, but everything else..." as in he was an incredible player, but a lot about him, like his words on Messi, things about his personal life, et cétera, are not something we can get behind of. Messi has shown his ability to be a great footballer and a great person. I don't think anyone below 40 would say Messi ain't bigger than Maradona for Argentina. A great example of this would be his tenure as Argentina's coach. Everyone slanders that team because we know it was a shitshow and he had no bearing in tactics nor player picks, anyone got into that team and it was horrible. Following his advice as coach was hard since his words always came from a place of authority by jurisprudence instead of knowledge. The opposite would be Lionel Scaloni, a man that has shown time and time again knowledge, self-criticism, course correction, and level-headness that we rarely see in coaches for the National Team. He never takes results for granted and will never consider a rival an easy victory. Under him, the national team has a very strong bond.

@@Spinachlover-wv3yo based on what? If we are talking about best of all time James Rodriguez is nowhere near players like Cruyf, Maradona, Pelé, Messi, Di Stefano, Ronaldo, Kaka, Zidane, Xavi, Iniesta... and the list goes on. If we are talking about his performance as of right now, then James is no better than Mbappé, Rodrygo, Tony Kroos, Modric, Bellingham or even Haaland. James had one amazing copa america, and those who don't watch football (but love to watch the international competition) are now singing this man's praises. James is not even playing for one of the five big leagues, he's playing at Brasil. Remember when the last Libertadores champion faced the UEFA champion? Yeah, Fluminense vs City, look it up. It was a disaster. Don't get me wrong, at his age he did well, but that's it.
@@Spinachlover-wv3yo -"What do you mean ‘his age’? You mean in 2014 world cup or currently? And mark my words, James will sign up for a top class club soon." Who was the best 2014 WC player? Yeah, Messi, not James. Currently he's not even in the discussion for the best player of the world. Vinicius (which I disagree), Mbappé, Haaland, Bellingham and others are the most likely candidates for the ballon d'or. James is only considered by some colombians fans that ONLY watch international football. Again, even Lautaro Martinez has a better record for this past year, being the top scorer at copa america (being subbed in almost every game), top scorer in Serie A, best player of Serie A, winner of Serie A, and Copa America (with the winner goal). You know, a real league, not the brazilian. "And I mean by skills. Clearly James can compete with cruyff, baggio, suarez but he’s very underrated" If we talk statistics, you know... the one objective metric, he's not. Are you kidding? Messi is the god of football. The king of football. The Golden goat of football. Messi is better than maradona and pele put together. They both knew it, and that's why they hated him so much. Messi is under 21 world cup champion, Olympic world champion, Copa America champion twice and a world champion at senior level. 8 time ballon Dior winner, 6 time Golden boot winner. He alone stands head and shoulders above ever other player with those unbelievable records and achievements. I swear, Messi is not a human being. He is a freaking god, period!!
I just love Messi unconditionally He provide joy in the world of football and he knows football should fair and attractive he do all of that with passion for the ball
Brilliant piece of narration. Every word of the script rings true. As an Argentinean myself, I think many people in Argentina failed to realize the pressure they put him under, especially the Maradona fanatics in the light of what Diego said about him, which was callous and very detrimental to the squad. That led many of his teammates to doubt him themselves, and some, to even usurp that place of leadership. Although Leo was wearing the captain's bracelet, others were doing the talking. They went along with Diego's style of leadership, a big mouth hot head, as expressed through the likes of Mascherano and others. It was bound to end in disaster. The squad was following the wrong leader and for all the wrong reasons. It took a whole new generation of players who had grown up watching Leo play on TV. He was their hero, their idol, and they imitated his style of play on every street corner and every vacant lot in every city in Argentina. When they joined the national squad, they knew full well who the leader was, and they were willing to lay their lives on the line for him. And the rest is history, as they say.
If he was my captain the one thing that would set him apart for me from the rest aside from his incredible game is what seems to be a no excuses philosophy, he literally gets beat up every game, fouled, pulled and he doesn’t flop, he doesn’t cry he get back up and keeps playing. How could you not give your all for someone who literally puts their body on the line for sport and country.
Im sure that Messi will be a good manager someday with his current skills in football and leadership style. Messi already left his comfort zone in Barcelona and now become a true leader
You cant put everything on one man no matter how good he is,this is a team sport ,things changed for Argentina once they figured that out and helped Messi
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. In my opinion, based on the pure skill and talent on their peak, Maradona, Ronaldinho and few other players might be ahead of Messi. But based on the career accomplishment and body of work (1 World Cup, 2 Copa, 8 Ballon d'Or, 6 European Golden Boot, 2 World Cup Golden Ball, 7 Major International tournament finals (9 if Olympics and Youth World Cup are added)) Messi is #1 on GOAT list ahead of Maradona and Pele. If Maradona had managed to win the 1990 World Cup with everything else unchanged, Maradona could still be argued as #1.
very slight correction at the beginning, Di Maria is actually saying "he got unchained!", I know, it doesnt change anything but I like correct translations lol
Messi's leadership grew from his ability, skill and mastery on the field trying to inspire his teammates quietly by leading by example.. to develop into a leader who was able to realise his power of speaking up to motivate and give verbal inspiration to his teammates with pre-game speeches and praise. That was the maturity and experience Messi gained after all that suffering on a international level to come to a point of enjoyment of the moment in the games with his teammates, to excel under pressure and adversity instead of overwhem him and Argentina. When the 2021 squad under Scaloni truly believed in each other as a group and the joint purpose to win Copa America for Messi. The 2021 squad benefitted on De Paul's strong defensive workrate in midfield, Dibu big saves in penalty shootouts, Angel Di Maria, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez all stepping up where others such as Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero could not provide the goals needed in previous big tournaments. It's an honour to witness Messi in this lifetime and for me he is the GOAT over Pele and Maradona, if only they could see what the leader he has become!
In Argentina we call "pulga" to those who are small. It could be both an insult or a term of endearment. And it became his nickname basically because he's short. I love Messi and his story, what a legend!
When you incredibly great at your job, always keep your head down, never talking shit to your teammate, respect everyone, never forget for who you are, and have a crystal clear vision of your dream. Everyone will follow you voluntarily.
He inspires his team to a level no one ever has. That Argentina team are soldiers for him. He doesn’t need to do anything but be the way he is and that will bring out a level from these players that they won’t show at club level.
That argentina team fought for Messi, and Messis greatness gave them the world cup... The single greatest individual performance in a world cup of all time.. The greatest and the best footballer ever

The fact that Messi retired and people always mocked that he never won an international competition. Then he comes back and shuts the haters up by winning a World Cup and two Copa Americas. He definitely enjoyed ramming that fact down his critics throats. He is a fantastic leader and loved by the majority of players he played with.
Now they say nothing. They fear him, like a force of nature
@@golfhound it's clear for him that there were more of us who loved him here, that's why he never really abandon us. Haters are loud.
You’re too invested in another man’s meat, my guy 🤣

But people forget that he had already won 2 titles for Argentina, the Olympics and under 20 trophies
He has always been a great leader.
Its just the narrative that changed.. messis leadership is even in his gameplay..
Observe who asks for the ball dropping to deep midfield when nothing creative is happening.. who takes the responsibility.. who wants to put some pace to the attack. He has always in every match taken that responsibility upon himself
But for PR driven and less conginitively astute social media there needs clips like these
Exactly what I thought. Whoever says that Leo is not a leader has the need to downplay him (Maradona and Pele so that they can keep the GOAT status P.S they obviously didn't LOL) or is either a baboon who thinks that being a leader means yelling a lot and waving your hands around when things aren't going well.

The reasons you people believe that introverts or reserved people are not natural born leaders is because they don't like to take the spotlight. But that's far from the truth.

But Argentines worship Maradona like crazy. He was egocentric e.g as shown in the video. Isn't that contradictory to what you said?

Still remember the 8-2 loss vs Bayern in 2020.

Who was the best 2014 WC player? Yeah, Messi, not James. Currently he's not even in the discussion for the best player of the world. Vinicius (which I disagree), Mbappé, Haaland, Bellingham and others are the most likely candidates for the ballon d'or. James is only considered by some colombians fans that ONLY watch international football. Again, even Lautaro Martinez has a better record for this past year, being the top scorer at copa america (being subbed in almost every game), top scorer in Serie A, best player of Serie A, winner of Serie A, and Copa America (with the winner goal). You know, a real league, not the brazilian.

Why do people hate humble people and love evil or big braggers
Where the f*** is the iconic voice of oh my goal. I won’t watch a single video without it
Messi is the Greatest of all time
Hes always led by example, but as he grew in age and confidence he leads now also in spirit and determination.
Goat 🐐❤
Lionel Messi is the Greatest Of All Time!🐐🏆🥇👏
#GOAT
Im sure that Messi will be a good manager someday with his current skills in football and leadership style. Messi already left his comfort zone in Barcelona and now become a true leader
You missed the 2008 olympic games where Messi won the gold, as well as the 2005 under 20 World Cup.
the bite of '87? 😱😱😱 7:40
?
Great quality video my friend. Well done on the research.
You cant put everything on one man no matter how good he is,this is a team sport ,things changed for Argentina once they figured that out and helped Messi
GOAT
Other fanbase is the only one that's pushing the narrative that Messi is not a leader
He inspires his team to a level no one ever has. That Argentina team are soldiers for him. He doesn’t need to do anything but be the way he is and that will bring out a level from these players that they won’t show at club level.
You said it all

and the people that follow this leadership style are some of his most loyal followers. Messi did everything the hard way at and the right way.
That argentina team fought for Messi, and Messis greatness gave them the world cup... The single greatest individual performance in a world cup of all time..
