I dropped mine today and it landed on wood. I was surprised it got scratched. I bought it used for $50, so i'm not wanting to spend $30 on one lens. I unscrewed the bezel and simply rubbed some megiar's Ultimate Compound on it for a few minutes. It's crystal clean now. While i can physically see where the scratch was, it's polished and clear now. In my pictures i took to test, i can barely see where the scratch is and can EASILY edit out the distortion in like 5 seconds in photoshop.
+Kevin riser that's awesome. The fix I shared on this video was too remove a litteral chunk of plastic that was missing. I have an update coming soon. Also, as long as the coating isn't damaged on the lens, your in great shape. Thanks Kevin!
Hi, I have the 2017 model and I have a lens in the middle scratched and in the videos it shows. Can the scratch be reduced using the ultimate compund? Besides this method for cases anyone knows where to find the replacement lens?
Hi TheKerevas! Sorry for the long response time. I had to really dig for this. First, you can remove for scratches lense covers by rotating the bezel counter clockwise. Then carefully sand or repolish the scratch out OR (this was the delay, you may be able to replace it here: hidekatsu.jp/2017/04/post-1011/ I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

Oh bummer! Ok then, yes, I’d do the 400, 600, 800, 3000 then a good compound or polishing rouge. Take your time on it. The biggest issues I’ve had with plastic is getting in a hurry. Let me know how it goes.

This is a good video, but they now have replacement lenses available from Samsung Parts.com for about 30 dollars. It might be worth it, considering how much work goes into taking out scratches...
I agree, there's a lot of time that goes into repairing a scratched lens and at the time the replacements were not readily available. But, sandpaper is easier on a budget. ;) Another thing to consider though, is that the distinct difference in color quality after the "coating" is removed from the OEM lens. It's superior in color correctness/white balance. I'm curious why Samsung would apply such a coating... Thanks for your comment.

Sucks! i have the 2017 version, you keep on saying the lens is plastic on your version, but mine seems like glass. 2 questions... 1, am I crazy, is it really plastic, does yours feel like glass but is really plastic or am i crazy. 2... would this process work for glass. +Ohh Danny Boy Oh Danny I feel your pain! To the very best of my knowledge (and other UA-cam videos, all if the lenses are made from a high quality plastic. In fact, I found out long after I created the video that you can actually replace the lenses. *OR have easier access to refinishing the existing lenses by carefully "unscrewing" the silver bezel. The issue is finding the correct adhesive tape to re-attach the lense to the camera for water resistance. Oh... and tgey are just that good at making plastic these days! The polymer on the first generation seems to be identical as that found on the headlights of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Let me know how this works out for you.
Interesting, hard to believe its plastic, though the fact mine didn't shatter might point to that fact. Did you have any problems with the lens after repair, it seems there is some kind of coating to the lens which is removed when you sand it down. I was planning on just repairing the spot where the damage occured.
+Ohh Danny Boy Hey, yeah. There is a coating over the plastic. I've always refered to it as a polarized filter. The BMW 3,5,6 &7 class have the same coating. Oddly, after I removed the coating from one side I was amazed that the overall color , saturation and crispness of the image was better for that camera/side.
+Ohh Danny Boy Hi Danny. Yes! Oddly the coating on the lens, oncevremoved allowed the camera to take much brighter and more naturally color rich photos and videos. So, I've got an update coming as I strapped it under my DJI drone and it... Well... Had an accident scuffing the opposite lens (thankfully). But yes, once the coating is sanded of the videos are more saturated.

How good was the image quality after the repair since I didn't see any samples after
Oddly it was MUCH better. There's a film of sorts on the original lens (before sanding) after the color was/is much more vibrant.
