Educator. He is best remembered as the former principal of Eastside High in Paterson, New Jersey. He was the inspiration for the movie "Lean on Me" which starred Morgan Freeman in 1989. The movie was loosely based on Clark's tenure at Eastside. He gained fame after restoring order to the inner city school as he often roamed its hallways with a bullhorn and sometimes a baseball bat. Clark once expelled 300 students for fighting, vandalism, abusing teachers and drug possession in a single day while challenging those that remained to do better. He retired from Eastside in 1989, then published a book Laying Down the Law: Joe Clark's Strategy for Saving Our Schools, detailing his methods for turning around Eastside High. His tactics earned him the nickname "Batman". After his success at Eastside President Ronald Reagan offered Clark a White House policy adviser position, a offer he declined. After retiring from Eastside, he worked six years as the Director of Essex County Juvenile Detention Center in Newark. After many years of living in New Jersey, he relocated to Florida. He passed away surrounded by family at his home from an undisclosed illness.
Lean on Me is a 1989 American biographical drama film directed by John G. Avildsen, written by Michael Schiffer, and starring Morgan Freeman. It is based on the story of Joe Louis Clark, a real life inner city high school principal in Paterson, New Jersey, whose school is in danger of being placed into receivership of the New Jersey state government unless students improve their test scores on the New Jersey Minimum Basic Skills Test. This film's title refers to the 1972 Bill Withers song of the same name, which is used in the film. Parts of the film, including the elementary school scenes, were filmed in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. - Розваги

I work as a guest teacher and many schools in 2024 would benefit from more Principals like Joe Louis Clark. All behaviors start at HOME. The parent is the FIRST teacher.

I watched Lean on Me as a kid and loved it. Morgan Freeman is SUCH a great actor, love the guy. Shawshank Redemption is another great film he did. Thanks Scott for all you do, this was great ❤

My mother is an Eastside alumni. She was in the class with a fellow Italian named Joe Pistone - aka Donny Brasco.
I grew up in the next town and graduated high school the year Joe left East Side High. There was so much buzz about him. I remember my mom wishing more principals were like him. Tough guy with a big heart...more of them needed. Especially these days!

My mother went to the high school when Joe Clark was principal. And told me most of the story behind the movie was made up but he did make a huge mark on school and the school does have a great reputation now. Also my father worked at the juvenile center and Joe Clark did not mess around when it came to the teens that were locked up he wanted better for them.
Stand and Deliver (1988) and Lean on Me (1989) were two favorites that I saw in my youth & have watched numerous times since. Both Morgan Freeman & Edward James Olmos gave incredible performances in those movies. Highly recommend both to anyone who has not seen them.

There's a cemetery here in West Virginia you're not allowed to leave rocks. They say because the headstones are in the ground and the lawn mower blades will hit the rocks. They asked if people will only leave pennies because pennies will not hurt the lawn mowers
There's a mausoleum here in Ohio where I live and they ask not leave rocks in the mausoleum
As a ground keeper I can totally understand rocks in the cemetery can cause a lot of damage to the lawn mower blades
As someone who had to purchase that piece of land for my loved one it pisses me off all of the rules they have. I offered to clean, cut maintain his plot on my own. Oh Hell no almost 10 grand for casket plot and headstone and they tell me what I can do with it and when. Hell if it had been my choice he'd Still be here and they could keep their damn piece of land ! Thanks for the great video. Sorry it kinda triggered me.

Scott, this a great video! I know of someone who actually was in the school when he was principal, and they say what you saw in the movie, was just about how it really was. They said despite, his rough exterior, he really was a nice person and meant well. He truly changed the culture and mindset of a lot of those kids. Kudos to you again, for this video 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

LeanOn Me is one of my top 20 movies ever. Joe Clark was a phenomenal Principal. ❤ He really made a difference. He was tough, but I think he truly cared about his students, which also made him fair! I remember reading the Time article years ago.

I have not seen this movie, but your video has inspired me to watch it. I have heard about Joe Clark, and I could listen to him all day long with his words of wisdom. I think tough love drives the people out who aren't necessarily wanting to do the right things. Maybe not all but many. Ya know my parents sent us to Catholic school to deal with nuns who carried yard sticks and rulers around, and they weren't afraid to use them. My parents told the teachers that if we misbehaved not to be afraid to hit us. So I got some tough love on both ends. But now, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I think my sister and I turned out ok. Thanks for your video Scott, I think Joe Clark just wanted to make a positive difference in an unconventional way and I have no doubt he did for some. RIP ❤ 💐

Many cemeteries have extra vaults on hand especially during snow and ice in states that don’t have great snow removal equipment.

Hi Scott I love watching Lean On Me it is a fantastic movie I just wish I had a principle just like him when I was growing up I was being bullied in Junior High and High school and the staff did everything they could to try and stop the kids who was doing it. I know if I had a principle like Mr. Clark it would have never happened. Love watching your videos from Michigan

When you're a teacher or in any position to help someone, you honestly aren't doing things right if people don't get mad at you at some point. You never want yes only people in your life. We all need tough love at some point but especially when we're young & discovering who we are.
