This variety is an evergreen perennial, but the genus includes annuals, perennials, shrubs, and succulents. They contain a milky sap that can act as an irritant so it’s best to wear gloves if cutting of the stems is required, or you are dividing them. ‘Purpurea’ has deep purple stems and leaves with pleasantly contrasting lime green bracts from mid spring to early summer.
