You've really helped a great deal...Dena. i lost my way with Art Licensing and everything looks and feel more assured now. I will keep the focus on. Thanks for the video.
This video was so informative and helpful, Dena! Thanks so much for sharing all of this with us. I think it's sooo important to build up multiple streams of income for ourselves as artists, and art licensing, selling prints and/or creating merch around our work is definitely a great option. There are so many ways to make income from art and our artistic skills, and it can get pretty overwhelming to learn about them all! Many times it can get hard to discover which methods are best for our particular goals and situation, as we are all different. This said, I think it's best to stay open and flexible in order to be able to make a sustainable living. Have a lovely day, Dena! And Happy Birthday to your parents! 🍾
Hi Erika! Thank you so much for watching and your wonderful support. You are an amazing friend and an amazing artist. I appreciate your insight and appreciate you! Gorgeous yellow rose in watercolor pencils you made this week- so pretty

Thank you so much, Dena, for this share. Wish I had time to join live for this. It is so full of information, very comprehensive and systematically presented. That is so beautiful with those men's silken pocketkerchiefs and those other products bearing your artworks. Your art lends a special flair to these products. I really wish I have more time for art. I do not even have time to promote my channel. I just stagnate. You seem so successful at devoting your full time to art. I saw this video where you said you left your job to to do art full time. You really have done excellently. All the best to you. God bless.
Deborah thank you so much for watching and your wonderful comments. I appreciate your friendship and your support. You are a true beacon of light in our world. Hugs to you and God bless you
Thanks for the great information! I do have to say that it is very easy to copyright your artwork in the USA. At this point, I have already registered a number of images and it is not very expensive. A copyright stands for 70 years from the date the artwork was registered. The entire process can be done online.
Very helpful I formation dena thank you so much and. Y new art project is going well. My art room assistant says hi to you too! I’m doing more art than I did last year! I like all your paintings your very talented artist!

I’ve been searching for these topics. I’m so glad that I found you. I’ll finish listening and watching and taking notes of this video of yours before I ask questions. What’s your book title and can I buy this from Amazon or Barnes & Noble?
It's really best to have your original work professionally scanned and colour corrected. It's not that expensive to do. These days they can scan at 600dpi, or higher! Once you have that file, you can alter it to fit licensing requirements. 😊😊
Hi Connie! Excellent questions. Regarding royalties, I recommend using the royalties on net sales as this is what most companies use. Regarding your copyright info, it is always a good idea to include the copyright symbol. Your signature should definitely be on the t shirts, right next to or part of the artwork itself. If your signature is legible, you can go with just the signature itself on the artwork. If you use a stylized or illegible signature, consider either modifying your signature to make it more legible or add your name below or nearby in print. My personal signature is completely illegible, the signature I use on every painting is one I developed over time which is legible, and slightly stylized. I have a video on UA-cam discussing the ins and outs of signing your name which you may find helpful. All my best to you Connie!!
Hi just checking this out? I’m doing a painting from a photo I saw online….. it inspired me….. and I did my version of this picture…… is there a copyright problem with this?
Hi- this is an excellent question. If the photo was from a site like Pexels.com or Pixabay.com where you can use the photo without worry of violating copyright, then you are okay to use it. Photos are considered works of art and are copyright protected unless the copyright owner (the photographer) gives you express use to use their photo. This includes photos in social media sites, photos in magazines, photos in newspapers, etc.
Hi. Thank you for the information. Do you use acrylic paint in your designs or watercolor and gouache? I have heard acrylic is too shiny to use. Thank you.
Hi Pamela! Some of my paintings which are licensed are acrylic, some are oil. The shine caught on the edges of the impasto strokes of my work is part of the look, so in my case shine is okay. I would think gouache would be the best choice if you are looking to go for a completely matte effect. Take care and have a super rest of your day
@@DenaTollefson hello. I have a question about submitting designs to crazy shirts. It says 11 x 17. So, do i need to do the art on an 11x 17 canvas? That size is hard to find. Or do i change the size within formatting on the picture of it? I may need to make my own 11x 17 surface.

Hi Diana!! Thank you so much my friend. Here are the answers to your excellent questions: Question: Did you ever mention we need a scanner ?or is a DSLR camera all we need? Answer: A scanner is not needed for licensing Question: Did you say that it’s only for iCanvas that the DSLR camera is needed? And that all other companies our iPhone photos are ok to use? Answer: I have several licensing deals where a DSLR camera photos are needed, a handful of them can be done with just iPhone photos. Most companies will want the larger files (10M +) that you can get with a high quality DSLR camera. Also note you will need software ( I use Photoshop Elements) to crop or resize photos to meet the company's size requirements. A tripod to keep the camera steady and ideally use a remote control button to avoid camera shake. Question: On fb do you post your art on your personal page or should it be our fb business page? Answer: Definitely use a Facebook business page as you will have much more reach and it will be viewable to anyone- even those who don't have FB accounts. I hope this info helps, Diana! Hugs to you
I loved how thorough this video was! So grateful for all the links in the description as well. I did have a question. If I put my artwork up on Zazzle and redbubble, will I still be able to license that same artwork to a company that would want a contract? Or is it less attractive to these companies knowing that the art not exclusively theirs?
Hi Rebecca! Thank you so much for your kind words. You can still license your images, even though they are available elsewhere. Things to watch out for- many companies do want an exclusive set of images just for them, others do not mind. Your licensing contract with the company will spell out the length of contract, and if it is exclusive and the territory involved. You could for example have a contract for one image with a puzzle company and also have it on beverage napkins, as long as both contracts would allow it. Hope this helps- take care
Hi Charlene- there is no need to submit for a copyright notice as all original music, original writing, and original artwork created in the US is automatically protected under US copyright law. So no one is allowed to use your work whether or not you have a copyright symbol on it. Each company will have their own method/requirements/process for submitting artwork, oftentimes they have a link you can follow on their website if they are accepting submittals.
Hi! I just stumbled across your channel. I was just asked by a label for a price on a design I did. They asked me to include my licensing fee? The intended use for the design is a backdrop. What do I need to consider when pricing and are there certain questions I should ask them?
That is awesome! Congratulations R C - Your licensing fee is the fee (one time only or recurring) that you charge them in order to use the design you created. The contract you sign would stipulate if it is a royalty arrangement or a sell the design for a flat fee arrangement and include all terms and conditions including duration of contract, etc.
Hi Franchesca, you do not need to created a LLC (limited liability corporation) to do art licensing as the person licensing the art. It would likely be recommended if you were the corporation or business obtaining the art to put on products, as you could be liable if something goes wrong. Great question!!
How about someone wants to use my image of a painting they wanna buy, to use it for a brand logo? How is this handled? I told them for printing the image on products it would need licensing.
Hi Blanca- you are correct, if a client buys your painting they own the original, but you still own the copyright to all images. They do not own rights to use the image for commerce unless you give permission to do so, which is a license.
Hi Kate! Yes you can! You always own the copyright to your artwork, when you post to social media you give them permission to post your work (you are licensing it to them for social media purposes). I am truly thankful for you sharing. I’m researching how to write a license agreement for a woman who wants to sell my art on t-shirts. I wrote an agreement that I am looking over to make sure I cover everything before I give it to her. My question for you is I am asking 5% royalties on net sales without deductions, is this better than 5% royalties on net sales? And one other question, should I ask that my Copyright Management Information, for example, Connie Koehler © 2020, be noted on all her website pages where my artwork is in the public’s eye on her website and should my signature be on the t-shirts?
Hi Connie! Excellent questions. Regarding royalties, I recommend using the royalties on net sales as this is what most companies use. Hi Jackie! Thank you so much for watching. I recommend you make your Instagram account public to grow your audience and make it easy for vendors to see your body of work. Take care and have a super week
@@DenaTollefson thank you Dena! You too
I don’t know how to do the live chat because you didn’t get my questions. LOL. Oh well.
Hi Connie- The live chat thing is only available the moment when the video is created live on line. After that, viewers can see the chat as it occurred live, but can't add to the chat- any comments and questions are in the comments section as you are using. Hopefully this makes sense- take care Connie

Thank you so much, Dixit!
How do you attract attention on Instagram?
Hi Alan! This is an excellent question, and a complex issue. I think staying active on Instagram and commenting in a meaningful way with your audience is super helpful, also posting consistently helps.
