- There are several good reasons to practice scales! In addition to being a good finger workout and a part of your lead guitar vocabulary, they also help you map the neck, apply some practical theory, and train your ear. Here's a great way to practice scales that incorporates all of these, using two different fingerings.

After looking at dozens of instruction videos, I finally found a instructor I can learn from. Thank You!!!!!!
I'm one of those who learned to play the C scale from C to C and back again, repeatedly and as fast as I could - but seemingly without a goal other than to mechanically play the scale more efficiently. Today, this lesson exposed me to the ideas of (1) slowing down; (2) focusing on each individual note within the scale; and (3) recognizing that (and how) the sound and finger position of each note relates to the sound and finger position of each other note in the scale - all with the simple purpose of being able to create more harmonious sounds - music.
Thank you David for such a valuable lesson. I have subscribed to your channel and now am going back to fingerpicking Landslide with your video.
Simply outstanding!
fantastic teacher, always patient and a pleasure to learn from, keep up the great work David and thank you for your time.
David, Thanks so much for your videos! I’m new to the guitar and just happened upon your videos. Your videos are super clear, concise and organized and presented in a quiet and very informative manner. Thanks so much for sharing your amazing skills! SUBSCRIBED!
A light finally went off for me..Thank you too much.
Great explaination of intervals
Helpful lesson, clear, careful and deliberate. I hate scales but I’m now motivated to practice them with my newfound knowledge. Well done!
Amazing and graceful. Thank you.
Very useful lesson. I’m so glad I found you this weekend!
A loud sound just echoed through my house. It was my palm hitting my forehead. You have helped me understand, for the first time, intervals. You're a great teacher.
I guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a method to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot the password. I love any tips you can offer me

Wonderful. More like this? I'm thinking this could be the beginning of a series.
Awesome instruction
Thank you for this lesson…
thank you for a great lesson.
Thank You , a lot of good info, presented well, I've been messing with the guitar, and hence some music theory for many years this is the best presentation involving scales. IMHO Thanks
The more I watch your tutorials, Dave, the more the guitar is making more sense! I'm a 'silver haired' player of 3 years but only now am beginning to study the guitar even though my 'mentor' has been banging on about it for 6 to 12 months. Thanks Dave.
THANK YOU!
Your thoughtful online lessons are very helpful. Thank you.
You are an excellent teacher
Wow never looked at scales in this way before. Thanks Dave.
Hey mr , thank you for all your help and insights on your lessons, keep them coming, MR NASHVILLE GUITAR GURU!!! Johnnypoatatoes! Helps alot all you do !!! God bless
This really made a lot of sense to me. Thank you.
First youtube comment...and I have watched and had the option to comment on plenty. Going to be working on this for hours on end, thanks Dave
Very nice lesson, thanks for sharing!
When do you anticipate releasing your scale series and is it similar to the one by Andres Segovia? Thanks
The Segovia scales are a series of fingerings more than a comprehensive method. As far as classical guitar I think the Aaron Shearer scale supplement is a great resource. I do still plan to put something together, it's in the "development" file...more to come!
@@NashvilleGuitarGuru Please do. I am wanting to learn scales and the benefit is now I can learn the notes as well, which is a big help.
Great lesson but your wavering left fretting hand is distracting. Just a suggestion. Plat the fingering without waving your fretting hand. 👍
He's using that technique to achieve vibrato.
So your vibrato is already perfect? Why not work on it during practicing your scales? Try it.
T Y
Not for beginners !
You can practice the C major scale on open C position if you find this scale tough
That shaking hand drives me crazy. It looks like an excellent video but I can't watch it anymore.
lol maybe roll a fatty?
So your vibrato is already perfect? Why not work on it during your scales? Duh
