  • After the total failure of making this set work, I decided to go back and see if I could make any improvements, here's the spoiler, I did get a slight improvement, but I did not succeed in getting it to function. Effectively I have a really cool looking paperweight that I can make do a trick! lol

I just finished my build today and am having a very similar problem. I think the tourbillon is working fine but it just doesn't seem to get enough torque from the base. Which seems wild because as you mentioned - when you wind it 85 times like the instructions say - it seems to have a lot of torque. I also tried lubricating all the gears and have fiddled quite a bit with where the tourbillon "sits" in the base since that seemed to be the problem (I've adjusted the toothpick for height a few times. But I think I'm pretty well stuck in the same place.
I appreciate the video - let me know if you ever crack it.

Ugears seems to be very ambitious with their designs...I think it may just be a matter of having a break in period so all the parts can mesh together well...I'm not sure how to do that on this one though, I still think it is a good looking conversation piece just sitting there. 🤷‍♂️

Me too. I have taken the top apart a couple of times but still have the same problem. Any help or specific videos would be greatly appreciated. I have really enjoyed putting the clock together and would certainly look do make another piece from the collection. Just frustrated that thus far I cannot make the clock work.

I had a similar problem but I can't say for sure the same is for you. The part which grabs the coil (with the part of the toothpick) is not in the correct location in your build. When the escapement works it looks like the part which moves, moves outside of the escapements and gets it stuck. You could try to move it right or left and see if it centers it into the escapement.

I checked the UGears Models UA-cam channel and they have a video showing some of the crucial parts of the build with some do's and don'ts. It may be worth a look if you want to take another crack at it in the future. Either way, it's better than it was which is a win in my book 😊

I doubt I'm going to give it another go, I've pretty much decided that it's one of those pieces that just has to be totally perfectly assembled and, honestly, I don't really want to dig back into it any further than I already have. lol

@@DbuilderguyDon't give up, it is a very beautiful piece to become a paperweight. There are many videos with possible problems and their solutions. I would disassemble the tourbillon and check it piece by piece, tooth by tooth. It is clear that the flywheel rubs somewhere. But don't give up, just take a breath to gain momentum 😁

I had to really fine tune the location of the mounts for the hairspring so that the impulse jewel is exactly centered in the fork with the hairspring at equilibrium. Doing that made a huge difference, and stopped the jewel from jumping to the wrong side of the fork. I also had a bunch of toothpicks ends sticking out from the pallet fork, which would rub against the balance wheel or the housing for the pallet fork for some orientations, causing it to jam.

I think this one is just a little beyond my technical ability to diagnose, I also broke the track that the tourbillon rides on when I was assembling it, I think that might have contributed to my problems, I do still think it looks pretty cool, just wish I could get it to run for a few minutes at a time.

Daniel, I'm getting ready to build this clock. So I hope I am able to get it to work properly. If I am able to get it to work, I will try to send you a video of it working. I'm sorry it didn't work for you. Still, this was a great troubleshooting video. I'll see you soon.

No worries, I hope you get it going, I still say it's one of the coolest looking pieces I've built so far. Good luck! Good luck🍀

Good effort at trying to fix the problem but it does work a bit better, so that's a result.

I'm pretty sure that this one has to be so precise that if you're off even a fraction of an inch it will throw the whole thing out of balance...I still maintain it looks cool though!

Problem of friction. You did not use the wax or clipper oil correctly
