Hi Paul, yes, 30 meters down and that's it! However, I can think of no occasion where I'd take a Cellini Prince beyond a wading pool is that. Take care, Bill
Another great video, Bill. Thanks. It seems to me that in many markets Rolex buyers and luxury watch buyers are two separate groups. I don't know whether that is because of years of marketing or perceived investment value or something else. I think this group is so important to the brand that Rolex finds they can't really sell anything not immediately recognisable at a distance as a Rolex. Sad really. They should spin off Cellini as a separate brand and show us what they're capable of. I bet if they did that they'd give the holy Trinity and Glashutte based brands a scare.
Hi Jeremy, thanks, man! Rolex is probably the smartest and most successful luxury mechanical watchmaker in the world. Their designs are "luxury tool" watches ... watches you can wear everyday to work and yet maintain a sportiness and luxury simultaneously. If they took their Cellini line and opened up the back, added finishing they might be able to give the Holy Trinity a run for their money, but their bean counters point out that that's exactly what they did with the Prince and it was a flop. I cannot think of another brand that matches the dial and finishing patterns like the Prince, and it's a shame that Rolex never entered one in the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. We may never know how Rolex would do up against the Holy Trinity. Kindest regards, Bill
@@watchartsci That's why they need to take the Rolex crown off the Cellini line and make it a true luxury brand in its own right. @watchartsci Bill, I just took the HSNY Horology 101-103 classes in DC. One of the instructors, Steve, still wears his Rolex Cellini Prince 5443 proudly. As Rolex's National Service Development watchmaker, that says a lot about the Cellini Prince. I might have to look into them.

Hi it looks a bit bulky compared to a Patek Gondola but it’s beautiful in the white gold circular I’m tempted but the last one that sold at auction only fetched 5k yet it’s still priced at circa 15 at ad.
Hey Beanz, if I saw one for 5k, I snagged it in a minute. The Gondolo line had some of the most interesting Patek designs, but like the Prince, they're gone. I hope the prices drop so I can even be tempted by a pre-2009 beauty. (AKA Pre-silicon hairspring.) Take care, Bill
I saw the “Godron” model for sale in a local shop last week and tried it on. Gorgeous time piece. But I see four of the same model currently listed on eBay, so it’s definitely a “buy it, you’re stuck with it” deal.
Stephen, Rolex buyers place a lot of emphasis on watches that can be re-sold for what they bought them for. In other words, ask, "Can I get rid of this watch if I buy it?" That shifts the emphasis from the quality of the watch to the willingness of others to buy it for the same or more than the buyer pays. As you correctly note, that is not the case with the Prince. To me it looks like an opportunity to get a very interesting watch for very little money and enjoy it. That only works if you could care less of what others want. Cheers, Bill
@@watchartsci Thanks for your reply, Bill. And yes, I'm very tempted - it's right up my alley. But lacking resale value, it's hard to justify its price unless I were to sell another timepiece to partially fund it. At the moment, that would most likely be a Blancpain 7002 (black dial), but that's a watch I'm loathe to part with!
Thanks Ivan, I didn't even know about the Marconi line. I found one for $1,800, but it's only 29mm. Interesting, and probably wisely discontinued. Cheers, Bill
I own two of these watches. I have measured the movements with a timegrapher. They both measure 28,800 and .5 sec/day time gain. Also they last three days on single full wind. Definitely a Rolex.
It's important Nissan Guy to get a watch that you can comfortable wear. With a 185mm wrist, smaller ones I like just don't work for me. So I know what you mean. Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci Thanks for your reply. I've never liked the big-watch look on myself. I've tried to rationalize the Cellini Prince but it's probably 3-4mm too long lug to lug. Still it's a beautiful watch!
Here's an article on the Prince, Steve. [grail-watch.com/2021/02/25/in-praise-of-the-rolex-cellini-prince/ ] One of the hobnailed patterns on the caliber 7040-1 appears to be gold, but I'm not positive whether it is or not. Take care, Bill
Thank you for the video!. My father has the yellow gold version, and if he's like other Prince owners, these are the Rolexes for collectors who don't generally like Rolex. I've always thought this was a hidden gem. And, while you might not be able to move it easily, you're already leaving the gate with a great deal. You're getting a precious metal watch with true historical pedigree from a desirable Swiss house at or under $10K. Personally, I'd rather get one compliment a year on a piece like this from someone in the know vs. a hundred from people whose entire horological knowledge base consists of steel oysters.
Very nice watches Bill. I know you have your heart set on one.I saw a nice one on Chrono24 for around $9000 and change, not too bad. Anyway, another great video. Looking forward to Sunday.
Hey Bruce, yes, the Prince is on my want list, but it's in line with some others. I'm always tempted by a lo-ball bid, but I may actually get one if I do! So, I'll just bide my time and admire them from afar ... for now... What's next on your list? Cheers, Bill
Interesting watches sir! I have a special love for square-shaped watches and these are no exception. Plus, the movement has the same shape with the case and that is a very interesting fact for me. Would love to own one in the future because the price is out of my reach at the moment. Thanh, Best
I like the rectangle shape too, but apparently, other than the Reverso and Tank, not a lot of watch collectors do. I think they're great, especially the Prince with a case-shaped movement. Cheers, Bill
Greetings Bill, thank you for the nice content. In my eyes you are the most knowledgeable watch person on UA-cam und provide us with the best quality videos. Keep them coming!
Yes, Jeremy, that's interesting why one rectangle shape would sell and another would not. Patek Philippe has never had that much luck with their Gondolo line nor Vacheron Constantin with their 1972 ... after three different styles, they dropped them. Pity. Kindest regards, Bill
I just bought an as new 5443 for $9200. What other Rolex can you buy for half retail? Tim Mosso did a video on it and thinks it could be a great investment and I agree. Once people see these for what they are, rare in the Rolex line, caseback, manual wind, precious metal and super high quality, they could take off. Anyway, there are too many reversos out there. Thanks for the video!

Yes, Annika! Luleå is the correct name (sorry...) We never went up there but stayed in Stockholm. We had a cousin in Stockholm, and he told us stories about the relatives up north. Thanks, Bill
Mmm, I pretty much swore, that I would never buy a Rolex, but the Godron, at $7,800 new and it's 18k white gold and I might be able to negotiate the price down....
Hi Bill, it's not surprising the watches didn't sell well, Rolex were always going to have a up hill struggle, the watch is rectangle manual wind and the designs looks (to me anyway) anaquired taste. Its a shame maybe Rolex should of looked at the JLC Reverso for inspirsation .
You stated the obvious, if you buy one you're stuck with it. That's the problem, I've never seen one in real life, they look fine, but this isn't what Rolex is known for. Not for me, I prefer to be more fluid in buying, that way if I find I don't like a high cost watch, I can recover most of my money. I find until it's on my wrist, I simply don't know how much I like it.
Ok Jack, didn't realize it was obvious. I didn't know that most collectors were aware that the Prince had those features, especially of the matching movement and dial guillochè design. Nothing new here; so move along. Cheers, Bill
@@watchartsci no Bill , sorry I meant the obvious part is you're stuck with it. I've seen the pictures just because of your interest, but you are stuck with it.
It’s a cool watch, someone who I do business with has one, he doesn’t have any interest in watches, wife got it for him about 10 years ago. I’ve always liked the prince, have considered getting one, but I prefer other rectangular watches more, and the styling is a bit much for my conservative taste to wear everyday.
Hi Bill, it's like my Vacheron Constantin 1972-after 3 versions of the watch, they gave up and quit making them. The latest one that came out in 2013 was a beauty, and I like the line of my '72; but they're just not that popular. Kindest regards, Bill
It's actually the only Rolex I would love. It is a good value and is different then the rest of their line. I do appreciate all that they do as far as movement making. Their designs are copied too much though.
I didn’t know Rolex re-released this line in the 2000s. I always liked the vintage Prince from the 30s, but those don’t do it for me. Too much in your face for me. The only one that is more or less accessible is the yellowgold one. A Reverso is a winning design, this is similar but doesn’t do it.
Hi Erik! The movement in the vintage Prince is a beauty... case-shaped tonneau ... a beautiful movement. However, the "new" one with its bridges and patterns just knock me out! Cheers, Bill
Hi Bill, their nice, but their writing ego's their checks can't cash. It is very '20's, but their trying to go up against the big boys and have been doing sloppy seconds to Blancpain too long. They are not a dress co full stop, and Rolex and hand finishing do not add up. This is my take on the general view as I see it. I liked their earlier models more. Happy new year and kind thoughts, SDL.
Hi SDL, I wish I'd look more closely at the moment I got a chance to meet one in metal .... but any way you cut it, that is a very cool movement. Love the way the three bridges flow and how the butterfly bridge secures the balance. Blancpain is fine, but I like the Prince too ... like Rodney Dangerfield ... it gets no respect; no respect at all! Cheers, Bill
@8:31 You explain at each bridge is a jewel ...watchmakers don't have to put in three or four gears under a single plate, this has all those bridges" So are bridges partial mounting plates? I know you've used the words many times, but I am sheepish to admit I don't understand the prupose or definition of "bridges". Overall, I agree the designs carried from the dial to the back are truly impressive and attractive! I could not find Rolex Godron Circulaire on ebay - what a beauty! If you need a topic suggestion please do a video on the re-definition of "Swiss Made", see this reuters article: www.reuters.com/article/us-swiss-watches/swiss-made-label-lacks-precision-for-watch-industry-idUSKBN1E01YT "The manufacture of components including dials, sapphire glass and cases is flourishing in China, Thailand and Mauritius and many of these end up in watches designated as “Swiss-made”. Stricter rules came into force this year for watches bearing the coveted label on their dial and for which consumers are prepared to pay a premium. The key requirement is that 60 percent of the manufacturing costs occur in Switzerland, up from a previous 50 percent threshold that applied only to the movement - the core mechanism. ....Several sources said almost all watch case makers now imported sapphire glass from Asia. Luxury watchmakers generally keep their suppliers secret, but recently there have been some initiatives denouncing this lack of transparency. Francois Aubry, a supplier turned watchmaker, recently launched a timepiece with “99.99 percent Swiss production”, publishing the list of all its suppliers, while the Swiss CODE41 watch project raised 543,000 francs on crowdfunding platform kickstarter with a concept of total transparency on the mostly Chinese origin of its components. Industry body FH said it was its task to intervene if “Swiss-made” rules were not respected. It has decided to set up a task force to make sure everybody plays by the new rules, especially once a transition period expires at the end of 2018. However, some watchmakers have already lost patience with the system. High-end brand H.Moser & Cie this year dumped the “Swiss made” label while declaring its own watches over 95 percent Swiss. It denounced the official rules as “too lenient, providing no guarantee, creating confusion and encouraging abuses.”
Thanks for that link! Good for H. Moser! I agree with them, and F.P. Journe who has all of his parts Swiss made, only puts "Made in Geneva" on his watches. I'd like to see the best cases and ébauches from around the world without judges knowing their origins, and I have a hunch that the Swiss may come in second to a lot of countries in both Asia and Europe. Cheers, Bill

I have a picture of him taken by Fly's Photography. The Fly Photography shop bordered the OK Corral, and part of the famous gunfight there poured over into Fly's. Also, Fly was the only person who ever photographed Geronimo. Most of the Swedes who came to the US during that period (@1870s) settled in Minnesota and Wisconsin - much further north. Cheers, Bill

Ah, gotcha! Yes, you buy it, selling won't be easy. Love the horology, and you'll always be happy! Cheers, Bill
Excellent video 💛💙🇸🇪
Erik, don't tell me you're Swedish too?! Thanks Bill
I live in Värmland, Sweden. Working in Stockholm most of the time, as I am now
It’s a cool watch, someone who I do business with has one, he doesn’t have any interest in watches, wife got it for him about 10 years ago.
Kindest regards, Bill
the Rayon Flamme is so cool, has David Lynch, Frank Lloyd wright vibes
Nice Vigeo
I agree 72nd! Why can't Rolex have one hand wound creative watch rather than the line of sameness...?🤔 Take care, Bill
It's actually the only Rolex I would love. It is a good value and is different then the rest of their line. I do appreciate all that they do as far as movement making. Their designs are copied too much though.
Mine too Maniac. It's a beautiful watch that has almost no appear to the typical Rolex buyer. Take care, Bill
WatchArtSci i understand. Any idea how thich the 2005-2015 models are? They look quite thick from the side
@@watchartsci I ain't dissing it, nor would I turn it out of bed. It's the Great Gatsby all the way. We don't get the 20's very often these days.
Well, Rolex took it out of their collection ... it must be good! Cheers, Bill
@@watchartsci You run the same horse every race, it's bound to stumble. We'l have no hand finishing illusions at this house thank you very much!
Oh no! You would rob me of my delusions? You know I can't handle the truth! Cheers, Bill
Beautiful watches that do not fit the mold of Rolex.
Well Matthew, since they don't fit Rolex's mode, don't you think they should give them away to dedicated collectors like you and me? Cheers, Bill
That would be fantastic. Just have to figure out who to convince to give them away to you and I ha ha...
If you need a topic suggestion please do a video on the re-definition of "Swiss Made", see this reuters article:
www.reuters.com/article/us-swiss-watches/swiss-made-label-lacks-precision-for-watch-industry-idUSKBN1E01YT
"The manufacture of components including dials, sapphire glass and cases is flourishing in China, Thailand and Mauritius and many of these end up in watches designated as “Swiss-made”.
R u Swedish Bill?
He does look like one of those Swedish migrants.
Hi Jonnie, my great-grandfather immigrated from Sweden to Tombstone, Arizona. Cheers, Bill
Ryvr, my great-grandfather, Karl Grandstrom, was "one of those Swedish (im)igrants" from Sweden to the US. He had a hat just like that... : >). Be friendly... Cheers, Bill
@@watchartsci Sweden to Old Western Tombstone...that's quite an immigration story I'm sure!
