A co-worker of mine has a doctorate in material science. He's convinced that the valid design space of materials for solar panels has barely been explored, but to make serious progress we need big improvements in our computational models of the candidates.
Some of the material properties relevant to batteries overlap the properties relevant to solar, so as you sift through ML insights about batteries, it might be worth checking to see if the insight applies to solar. It's just a hunch, of course, but it seems worth a ponder. I can connect you with my co-worker if you want details.
