never seen a song bring so much joy to peoples face and lives
That performance was pure genius. Absolutely superb musicians. Have seen it many times and still stunned at all their extreme talents
I saw Focus live in 1972. Prog rock is probably the best description of their genre. They were phenomenal. This song is a mickey take really. Try Sylvia. Top Dutch band with worldclass musicians. Yes he was yodelling.
The girl was cute, she was totally enjoying herself and then said I wont listen to the song again? She asked if the song was meant to be funny, No it was meant to be hilarious. I will only listen to this song 1000 more times and I will continue to laugh my ass off!
Sunday morning, giant speakers out the dorm window, amp turned to max. Put the vinyl on the turn table. Drop the stylus on Focus. Just making sure all those with Saturday night hangovers got a lively start to the day. 🤣
The church goers would have adored you as well I bet 😂
Now that is how talented musicians fit a 7 minute song into a 4 minute slot without cutting out part of the song, they just played it faster. Incredible!!! Thank GOD I grew up in this era, no autotune, just pure talent.
He is yodeling - this is a Dutch progressive rock group
They still perform, with original drummer and keyboard/flutist/yodeller. In those days, a standing ovation at the Midnight Special was rare.
Focus is one of the few if not only bands that received a standing ovation on The Midnight Special. The vocalist still tours to date at small venues like fairs. The band is from Holland, they're Dutch. The lead guitarist was considered one of the BEST rock guitarist in the world.
They had a seven minute song and four minutes of TV time. They did not want to cut the song shorter, they just played the song a lot faster.
and imo, better for it, just sounds better played faster.
This song was 6m 4s. The 4 min version is the one with the introduction with verses taken out. Both on UA-cam Music, check.
That is a myth that is simply not true
@@Elias_Veine_Wiigbut I do love me a good myth 😂
Must hear the studio version of the song🤘
The only band to get a standing ovation on The Midnight Special.
Not really. Just the first one.
Thanks for this and I enjoyed your reaction. That is only the 3rd time out of 37 reactions that I have seen this extended version:)
Say it! He looks crazy.( But genius)😂😂😂 Greetings from The Netherlands.
Dont cry?? He kept yodeling for almost 20 seconds on one single breath. He wasn't crying he was about to loose his breathe. That's why he tilted his head back to breathe in more oxygen and away from the mic so you coud not hear it.
Technically it was probably considered rock back then, but it's definitely more progressive and experimental. I look at this as the precurser to bands like Yes and songs like Changes.
Not really a precursor to YES. Focus band was formed in 1969. YES formed in 68. Now u know.
Focus was one of the best Dutch progressive bands from the 70’s. Thijs van Leer, the singer, is a classically trained musician and flutist and the guitarist Jan Akkerman was at that time considered to be the best guitarist in the world, at least by quite a few people. Find some more of Focus, it is really good music ones you get used to the weirdness of it.
If you want to check out classic hard rock, watch Deep Purple do Highway Star. Don't listen to it in the car- instant speeding ticket
No, Hocus Pocus is definitely not serious. Focus camped this one up every time they performed it, whether at concert or on TV. And they never did it any one way twice. Btw, Thijs van Leer was warming/psyching himself up at the beginning because they were about to belt it out in just a little over half the time due to broadcast constraints.
This is like a shock to most people the first time they see/hear this performance! It's not the average song so to speak i mean in how many rock songs you hear some dude yodel, whistle while playing the Hammond B3 and playing the flute!! Gotta say it took me some listenings before i started to like the song.
The Midnight Special was an amazing show back in the day...but this episode ran long and being live, they only had four minutes to do a seven minute song...but they did it.
Great performance and it was definitely a challenge for the band...
It was originally 6m 4s and they cut several verses to broadcast making it 4m 5s - both versions on UA-cam. All live versions they did fast. Check out BBC.
Check out Radar Love by Golden Earring for some more progressive eurorock
Like it's different now....other than the prescriptions.
You need: great skills, great sense of humor, courage and creativity to create and perform a composition like this.
Back in the late 60s and most of the 70s a lot of bands didn't really conform to genres. Instead, they played whatever they wanted to, so a band may have 1 track that was pure rock, another more prog rock, and even some that would be classed as folk, and often on the same album.
Jan Akkerman, genius on guitar!
Haha - it's supposed to cause anxiety! Loved your reaction! Thijs, the keyboard player was no doubt intentionally being humorous with those insane facial expressions, he's quite a character! Yes, the drummer is absolutely killer & the guitarist, Jan Akkerman was definitely ahead of his time, along with Uli Jon Roth, from the early Scorpions. There were 2 of my favorite guitarists back in the 70s. Great musicians!🔥🔥💥
There was a lot of “unusual” music in the 70s and this one certainly ranks up there. Wherher it’s everyone’s cup of tea or not, it’s awesome that musicians felt comfortable with doing just whatever the heck they felt like
If you're getting into classic rock, you're gonna want to react to Meatloaf, Paradise by the Dashboard Light. it's...intense. Another one that takes you on a total journey is Frankenstein by Edgar Winter Group, the long, live version. Then jump into the 90s for The Three Little Pigs by Green Jelly. All of these will blow your mind.
I’d like to hear your take on one of Joplin’s sadly neglected sleepers from that era: “Farewell Song” on the album “Live at Winterland ‘68” by Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin.

The Midnight Special was a TV show. He is yodeling and their music was considered progressive rock.
Yes, they're WTF? - but in a GOOD way!
Bass comment reminds me, you haven't touched BandMaid in many months - check out their recent live performances of "Hate?" and "Don't You Tell Me" for some excellent MISA action - and all the other 'Maids, too!
You will listen again. Check out the studio version. 😊 If you are going to explore classic rock, you are going to have a lot of shocking and beautiful experiences. I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so. Love Reign O'er Me by the Who is a masterpiece. This the music I grew up with.
Some other good drummers: Karen Carpenter, Neil Peart (Rush), Phil Ehart (Kansas), and many more.
How can anyone watch and hear this and then say they wouldn't watch it again? My question is what do you have against great sound and vocal and instrumental genius? No subscribe for me, 👎
They're Dutch (from the Netherlands)
The singer...he's kinda...I don't know....Stoned?
I DON'T KNOW THAT JACK NICHOLSON WAS THE LEAD SINGER OF FOCUS!!
In all those videos, no word about Jan Akkerman
Absolutely loved your reaction Kay! This song is all the things you said and felt. An amazing art piece. I hope you have a wonderful journey with your channel. There is a lot to be discovered.😆
I bought my first record in London in 1960 and "Love Remembered" by Focus is one of my Top 10 favourite songs/
Play it in silence,in the dark and imagine you are in the desert. It is Beautiful. " Sylvia" was their biggest hit.
1960? Love Remembered by Focus came out in 1972
@@Elias_Veine_Wiig I see that my comment could be misinterpreted. I was trying to say that I have bought records in London since 1960( from memory "Are You Lonesome Tonight" by Elvis and "Blue Moon by The Marcels ) and in all that time, over these last 64 years that "Love Remembered" is in my Top 10 favourite songs.
I saw them in Concert in 1972/73 at The Cridon Greyhound Pub/Music Venue with 3,000 others in South East London.
"Croydon Greyhound"..
he drugs in the seventies had been much better than in our days 🤣🤣🤣
Never heard this version of this version🤔🤔🤔
Finally more believable reaction from someone
If epilepsy was a song, this would be it.
still sounds as mad it it did when it was released all those years ago
Can anyone name a new band that is good not a solo artist an actual band
Not listen again?
I suggest you do.
The singer is kinda, hmmm having fun👍
They are Dutch. What do you expect?
Pierre Van Der Linden on drums ---- so underrated.
Am I correct that he quit right after this performance?
@@CarbonnothingbutcarbonYes he did, but came back in 1975 for a tour. He joined in 1977 on a single concert because the drummer at that time didn’t show up. And he was also back for a reunion show in 1990. And since 2004 till today. He’s 78 years old now, and still play drums for Focus in 2024.
@@Elias_Veine_Wiig do you know why he quit after this performance?
@@Carbonnothingbutcarbon Because he didn’t want to hear Jan Akkerman and Thijs van Leer argue all the time. So he left, and joined the band Trace instead.
@@Elias_Veine_Wiig ah okay. I didn't know there was that kind of issue in the band. I thought maybe he had quit because of the performance, which would have been absolutely nuts.
Half in jest,all in serious..
having the house thrown at you
Your reaction is priceless!!! Best song to watch reactions to, and yours was great!
Musical coffee!!
nope
They sped up the song here because they were only allowed so long from the TV show!
Nope, this version is 6m 4s that they cut 2 verses to fit in a 4m 5s slot for TV. Both versions on UA-cam Music, short one with introduction.
It's not classic "rock" per se, but unique using rock themes and motifs. For some real Classic Rock here are some suggestions:

My favourite story about this song is this, it was the Nike theme song for the South African World Cup. Nike didn't bother to invite the group down to watch the tournament, likely being too impoverished.
Incredible.
Yes is a very good group from the 70s. Anything from the Fraigal album would be a good start. Warning if you listen to Yes you will become a fan for life.
I am old, never saw them live. Glad all the old shows are coming out.
250 meters from my Dutch home they did a concert.
I think i did pay 10 guiders back then.
Great times.
70s Rock and Roll from the Netherlands.
Great reaction! I loved the way you jumped out of your seat at the first yodel.
Frantic but brilliant 1971 Dutch magic
👍
I like you and have just Subscribed.
Good Luck :)
Best Reaction Ever (to anything).
Hahaha, great reaction!
Remember these were the days where almost everyone was on some type of drug. 😂
How has anything changed? Caffeine was the abused drug back then and still is today. The cannabis is better now and legal in many more places than it was back then.
@@RMForbes505 true
the remarkable guitar playing is really the only reason to sit through this absent-minded frivolity.
The Bass and The Organ and Drumming were excellent even if you didn't approve of the lead.
Good Grief I forgot this abomination existed now I’ve got to forget it all over again.
This is NOT the version we grew up with. This is terrible.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug!!
