  • We're continuing to honor Holly Springs Black History by highlighting meaningful places and people who have shaped our community over the years.
Hear from longtime resident George Kimble as he shares about his time as a student at Holly Springs Elementary School. The original plank structure was built around 1924 and funded by donations from Black citizens, county school funds, and a grant from the Rosenwald Foundation.
Eventually, the building was replaced with a brick classroom in the early 1950s. The school for Black children stood where the W.E. Hunt Recreation Center is today. Kimble describes how young minds were inspired and how staff encouraged students' desire to learn despite the disparities of a segregated system.
