    In this video, we'll "speed edit" 12 color film negative scans directly in Lightroom, using a plug-in called Negative Lab Pro. Each of this files was scanned using the DSLR-scanning technique I showed in my previous video.
    Included in the FREE trial download are these original, RAW DSLR scan files to play around with in Lightroom or to compare Negative Lab Pro to any other available process.

    Take my money!
    I just tried the trial on one of my pre scanned negatives and it's perfect! One click and I had the exact result that my lab gave me in print! No more mucking about with photoshop layers or curves in lightroom.
    Brilliant tool! A big thank you!

    Hi, I was wondering how this would handle badly exposed (not really badly, probably -2 and up to +3) shots and what's the resolution and sharpness compared to a pro scanner assuming the holder is keeping them 100% flat in both scenarios?

    I am impressed. What versions of lightroom will this work with?

      @Lucus44 - correct... in order to work, it makes use of features in the SDK that weren't available until Lightroom 6.

    I would love to see a video using a scanner to get a raw negative. In your guide, you mention that there may be so.e white balance issues, vs using a DSLR to scan the frame. However, if you scan as a raw linear negative, white balancing in Lightroom should be identical. If not, could you explain why and how to work around it?
    One more question. Will the plug-in give great colors with any DSLR or is it specifically tailored to translate Fuji raw files?

    • @NatePhotographic
      @NatePhotographic  5 років тому

      Hi George, yes, I will make videos showing how to use with scanner. With the right scanner settings, it works quite well, and you are right that a "raw" linear scan is ideal. Using something like VueScan to export as a DNG is very useful when it comes to color balancing, but it is not actually a "raw" file in the strictest terms (for instance, you cannot actually apply a DCP camera profile to a VueScan dng file). And yes, the plug-in will give great colors with any DSLR (assuming the correct steps are followed). It includes custom-calibrated DCP profiles that let you get lab scanner results (or better) from all kinds of cameras.

      @@NatePhotographic your tool seems great tbh, and I am sure all film shooters out there will be at least interested to give it a try. I think you should make tons of vids showcasing different scenarios (also b&w, does the plug-in fall back to simply inverting the negative, it is there still some magic sauce that gives better / different results than a simple inversion????)

    • @NatePhotographic
      @NatePhotographic  5 років тому

      @@Georgeinthejungle Thanks George :) I'm curious, what kind of scenarios did you have in mind? Like different film or scanning techniques? Definitely plan to make more videos, so open to ideas! And yes, for b&w there is some magic in there that lets you get way closer to what you'd get out of darkroom prints... I plan to make a video on black and white soon that shows more :)

    Is auto density in v2.1? Can’t find that.

    • @NatePhotographic
      @NatePhotographic  4 роки тому

      Hi! As of v2, Auto Density is automatically applied to all tone profiles (except for the linear tone profiles). From there you can adjust the density adjustments further using the "brightness" slider.

    I prefer Colorperfect...
    Tried the "try version" of Negative Lab Pro but the results are all over the place: The same roll, shoot in the same place and exposed properly gives me completely different results.
    With Colorperfect i've never had any problem, plus it's in photoshop (way better for dust removal), you can keep the film borders and the results are just as the prints that you make in the darkroom, without any adjustment needed.
    I think that Negative Lab Pro it's too generic, different film stocks have different characteristics and what this program is doing seems a lot like a simple negative inversion (with just some basic cast correction)... Colorperfect ,on the other hand, has a specific negative inversion depending on the negative stock, plus on the type of file and color space of the file that your trying to invert and that gives you a more accurate result, without the need of adjustments other than a minor white balance when needed.
    Over all I can see the useful side of this program, but it's just not for me, i guess.

      Hi! What are you using for digitization? If using a scanner, please note that the next version (v1.3) will bring big improvements for scanners, with support for linear tiff scans and Vuescan RAW DNGs with custom raw profiles (current version of Negative Lab Pro was mainly calibrated for DSLR scans). While my own experience with ColorPerfect was that it produced awful colors for DSLR scans, I have been sent examples of linear tiff's from users (particular Nikon scans) where the initial results from ColorPerfect were better than v1.2 of Negative Lab Pro, and that will be remedied in v1.3.
      To address some of your other comments:
      In regards to consistency, you can use the "sync scene" function to get the exact same inversion across multiple shots (something you cannot do in ColorPerfect)...
      In regards to Photoshop vs Lightroom... Lightroom has many advantages, mainly the ability to deal directly with RAW files, convert and edit multiple files at once, and make *non-destructive* edits (I will admit of course that Photoshop has better dust removal). And you don't lose your crop edged in LR, you can just re-crop after conversion (or in the next version you can specify a border margin to ignore in the image analysis...
      In regards to film specific profiles... ColorPerfect's profiles are equally likely to make it look worse instead of better. It appears to be more or less a random number from 0-1000.
      Anyway, I hope you will give the next version a try, but I do realize of course that Negative Lab Pro isn't for everyone! Also, if you'd like me to look at any of the images you've seen that didn't turn out right, feel free to email them to me at nate@natephotographic.com and I'll take a look! Cheers!
