Hello Jim: Nice test, I really like it but the two constants I am seeing is 1) wood 2) 30". To compare these two items I think we need an additional constant or two.. 1) what was the weight difference between the 2X10 and the torsion box? 2) Obviously the 2X10 is thinner than the box but what about width. So here is my point: Test this: a ten-inch wide torsion box over a 30" span compared to a 2X 10 over a 30" span. or a torsion box of the same weight and span as the 2X10 - With 30" being the only constant the rest of the test can be totally out of control. Would like to see a re-test with additional data.

Thanks for your thoughts! I have a very strong feeling that someone with a little engineering or physics background could calculate all this pretty easily. I suspect you're like me, in that a bit of real-world empirical work helps get the point across on a gut level. I like your idea, I would like to see that done too. In the next few months, I'll be making a big torsion box that will function as an outfeed table for my cabinet saw. Maybe I should also make a smaller torsion box as an adjunct to the tabletop build. I now have some 2x12 lying around, so that would be the comparison this time. I think it would be fun, and we could also test the deflection in both directions. Of course, it's a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, and I just ate my delicious lunch sitting outdoors listening to the birds sing, so I'm optimistic about taking on new projects. If I actually do this, I'll get back to you! Thanks.
