      @@AliceintheRabbitHole the affordable Care act save me. But the sad thing about it is that you essentially have to make under $36,000 a year to get a policy you can afford. So you either have to be dirt poor to get government assistance in this country or you can make just enough to pay $400 a month for insurance that you can't afford that would be better spent on other things. Just imagine if you could actually put that money back into the economy.

      It WAS ridiculously affordable when Obama was in office but then Trump got rid of the mandate and prices skyrocketed. I am actually still grateful as I have had a heart murmur and asthma since I was a child, so I could never get health insurance due to "pre-existing conditions." In the 1990's, all I could get was $600 a month and they would cover NOTHING unless I was in the hospital and only after I paid the $3k deductible because despite being in my early 20's, my pre-existing conditions meant they didn't really want to sell me a policy. It was awful. And in my 20's, working on banking in California, my employers didn't offer insurance.

    Way too many comments in my mind about all of the topics you covered!
    A company recently gave me some free samples to test, only they were full sized products. They asked me to simply post my reviews on their site. What a strange feeling to know I’m going to share my honest thoughts, but I’d rather not have that minuscule amount of conflict with the person who sent me the products if I don’t love everything. As someone who hates being in conflict with anyone, I feel like this emoji 😬

      I’d say to keep in mind while writing your reviews that people of different preferences will read them. Meaning: there’s a nice way to explain how the product works, who it’s for, who it’s not for - and just an unhelpful review (not that I think you don’t know this lol, but I understand it being more difficult when someone is watching 👀)
      Thank you!! I’m having such a blast with it, although I did remember that outside of New Orleans, this is actually seen as a really big change? And sometimes not in a good light 😐 Oh well, I’ll spend a few months trying to destroy stereotypes-again LOL! 😁

    The tactcha looks like an allergic reaction to me to pimples just don't really go away over night. I am just ahh on the cleanser it's ok to me not life changing I feel it's alittle drying but I use it a few times a week cause I have it. I hate the GR cleansing balm I don't think u should have to use a stripping cleanser to get rid of a balm infact if I don't always have to double cleanse or can use it in the AM that's even better and I can do that with the pharmacy one. I like the lanige toner I wasn't in love at first but after I started using it again and kept up with it I really enjoyed it, I also think some of the people's issues are whatever their skin is going threw at the moment and it doesn't mean it won't work later unless it burns totally drying or an allergic reaction I feel people maybe should pick it up and try again that's what I do because sometimes it's not a total love for me till later on and other products it's love at first use and I love the products that are love at first use. It's funny most of the products we feel the same way about.

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole

      Yes absolutely!! And I think that really is the problem with trying something 4-5 times. Was it 4-5x over 3 days? Because that could have been 3 days of something going on within the skin vs a result of the product. Yeah tbh I just can’t imagine disliking the Laneige toner (allergies aside, though I don’t think I’ve heard of reactions with it - still could happen for someone out there). I think there are good dupes, I think there are different routines that may not benefit from it, but it’s overall a really well done product!

    Hey Alice! I was wondering if we could imitate the effects of sk2 by layering it with a 1% aha toner or sth?
    I've never used sk2, but i have used all its dupes. Seeing your reviews I'm very tempted to buy it. Bcz i desperately need the pore refining effect.
    What combination do you think could imitate the effects of a sk2?

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  2 роки тому +3

      Oooh that’s such a good question. Tbh I’ll have to be over here thinking about it. Because for me, what makes SK-II so darn special is that it does so many different things for my skin all WITHOUT adding actives. Absurdly easy to work into a routine, and yet it helps with glow, pores, hyperpigmentation, acne 🤯
      But you’re right, maybe the trick is some kind of layering. I wonder if a PHA/BHA blend might be the trick? Something that gets down into the hair follicle but also resurfaces on the top layers??
      Ok ok I promise I’ll keep thinking about it and get back to you (two of the dupes will be in an upcoming empties, so I’ll make it a point to include this chat then!!)

      @@SA30.137 Great idea 💡!! I just started layering toners by starting with first toner as a high concentration AHA toner. I had been so trained by The Ordinary about not using AHA's with my peptides and other actives. I now love all my K-Beauty toners and essences and I layer. But something was missing. I get so flaky with Tretinoin. Now, I use a higher concentration AHA/BHA toner, and then go about doing other things to get ready and then come back and do my K-Beauty routine. It seems to really be helping more with texture and flakiness. I still feel like I have to let the AHA's do their thing for a while before I go ham with all my hydrating toners. But I doubt that is really necessary.
      **I do love my K-Beauty toners with PHA and AHA but most of mine are such a low concentration. Great for layering for hydration without irritation. I use Cellbone (Hong Kong brand I think) Collagen Toner on a cotton pad that has a high concentration of AHA but is not drying. Now I am going to have to try layering it with my Benton Fermentation Essence.

    Your hair is everything.
    Shooooot, when it comes to returns, I’m not ashamed to return a product I spent a good amount of money on. And usually that’s the case when I shop Sephora. Like if it’s a product by the ordinary I’ll most likely pass it on to someone I know who could benefit from it. But I bought a very expensive body wash and it dried my skin out. It went back to the store after that first use.
    I’m currently so mad at myself for a very expensive Sephora purchase I made too soon. I purchased the volumizing oribe s&c after a hair stylist UA-camr convinced me I needed to use volumizing s&c for my hair type…and since I was already using gold lust, I ordered the set. Unfortunately I waited until I finished my gold lust set to start using the new set and omg it dried my hair and scalp out SO bad and yep, I was past the 30 days to return them. 😩

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  2 роки тому +1

      That’s good!! That policy truly does exist for that reason; it’s unfortunate that too many of us talk ourselves out of very justifiable returns
      Is it under 60 days? I believe Sephora will give you store credit! Also is the gold lust performing the same? I’m wondering if something is off with the new set…🤔 if so, Sephora should give a return regardless for damage. I’d go in store and find out!

    I personally think most bad skincare product experience is due to user error. Some people may know what they are looking for their skin (hydration / moisturisation / brightening / soothing and what not). But they dont necessarily pick the right product as we saw in your video where they pick certain products cuz of the high rating.
    Happened to me before, i was looking for hydrating moisturiser as my one and done product for busy days but somehow ended up with more nourishing moisturiser cuz i saw so many glowing reviews about it. I was so disappointed with the moisturiser cuz it didnt give me the hydration i need and i already spent the money 😭. So my solution was, simply use the product when i have extensive routine where i separately add hydration with toners/essence and it works wonderfully (tho i still had to look for another one and done moisturiser). And after that i realised that the moisturiser is very good at soothing irritated skin which i would never find out if i -wasnt so desperate to use my money worth- simply stop using it.

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  2 роки тому +1

      Good point. I suspect also that some people don’t know what they are looking for - and oh my, it can be very hard to find the right product in that case!
      One thing I find interesting is that people go into the process of buying makeup with the understanding that some amount of skill/technique WILL be a requirement to use the product. That mentality doesn’t always exist with skincare though - and yet it’s very important to understand the core principles of what skincare products can do!

    This is such a fun video. I have pretty normal non-sensitive skin, but one time, at least 30 years ago, I was heavily into Clinique. For the first time I used the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion--which is a pretty basic product for Clinique, but my skin had the worst reaction. Overnight I developed small bumps under the skin all over my face. The bumps took at least a week before they disappeared. From then on I have only used an occasional product from Clinique--and only makeup products, never skincare. I usually read product reviews too and sometimes, I decide not to purchase a product after reading negative reviews. I don't know why, but I usually feel the negative reviews are more honest than some of the positive ones.

I think what's so fascinating about this topic is that it goes so far beyond skin care. Of course this goes into politics and religion, etc. We need to be cognizant the fact that other people have thoughts and feelings and experiences that may differ from our own and we need to respect them. You are NOT ALONE! I waste so much time cross-shopping( is that a term?), particularly those two! Mainly, I NEED to know I got a good product at a GREAT price... this is indicative of several psychological issues pulling and pushing at the same time! Also, in terms of Laniege , I have tried the lip masque- really nice, but a Tatcha one I got ( certainly in some kind of special) is better. I did get 2 tiny Laniege face night masgues to try from my Stylevana order, haven't tried yet. Not the line that is as exciting to me, though, as some other K-beauty selections..

    Hallo, 🦋. I am loving this. I feel the same when I see products completely destroyed by people. I am so silly I can't even watch one because she was saying how much she hated the UD wild green, which is okay BUT in the same breath just went on and on how great the Milani flora palette was so great . I scratched my head because that palette is awful and no pigment lol. I realized she just wasn't the content creator for my tastes. Also BTW in my save folder for skincare and help I think yours are the most saved and rewatched. This was a lot fun to watch. Proves beauty is so subjective. Speaking of allergies, I recently concluded that I have a reaction to products with rose. It took me a while to narrow it down, because it's (usually) not an instant reaction, but only shows up as itchy bumps after I've used a product with it for three or four days in a row.
    Because just about nobody has this sensitivity, companies have started adding it not only to skincare, but to makeup as well. I've gotten used to checking moisturizers, toners, etc for anything with "rosa" in the name, but now I have to look for it in primers, foundations, and blushes too. (It's especially infuriating when you're using concealer to cover up the red bumps from your moisturizer, only to later discover the concealer contains the same allergen. Why, Lancome? Why?)
    I try to give these products a fair review, but I always mention the reaction. I can't be the only one out there with a rose allergy, right?

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  2 роки тому

      Yep, that’s great you caught it! Rose allergy isn’t the most prevalent, but it does exist for sure. And yes I do not know what it is with Lancôme and the constant fragrance everywhere. I am certain I would do better with the brand if they toned it down 😩

I love my CeraVe, The Ordinary, and CosRX products, and will stick with those.

But being said las I also would make sure I return something I didn't like. But would probably use/ try way too much skincare and let the FOMO get me a lot more than I do.

    I sometimes think the laneige cream skin is misunderstood. It's meant to be in the toner step. I have the mist version and the first time I used it, it was a sticky mess. Now I just do 2 light sprays from a distance. I much prefer cosrx ceramide mist though, and better ingredients. I always look up reviews before buying a new product. I went back and watched your review on the Grande lip pumping mask, as it's been in my cart. I appreciate the way you discussed it and what to expect. So I will now be buying it. I couldn't find your video about the Grande lip serum though, was that any good? Although I do prefer a mask.

    I got an email from Peach & Lily earlier describing the 7-Skin method. Basically it’s using 3-7 layers of essence after cleansing. Does this do anything besides make your face sticky? Is it a ploy by essence-making skincare companies to sell more product? Or is this a real thing?

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  2 роки тому +2

      It’s real!! I don’t do it daily, but when my skin is stressed, dehydrated, etc - oh it definitely makes a difference. I think it’s akin to leaving a sheet mask on, as it’s kind of like fighting evaporation from a different angle. Rather than block evaporation with a physical Barrier (sheet mask), it’s fighting it by consistently adding more water+humectants!

Hoping it will work for one of us, if not… I know I can easily get rid of two brand new ones. Thinking… 🤔 it will work for me, but not my daughter, but hoping it will for both! She is using a Earth Harbor right now and it does not irritate her, but she does not love it (kinda smelly) so will try the next soon! 😜

    So I actually always specifically look out 1 star reviews. I don't think most 1 star reviews are reflective of the reality of the quality of the product, but I do find that the more detailed ones will identify the weakness and you can determine for yourself whether that fits your goals. An example of this is how the Sulwhasoo mask read. You use it as an additional step, as it should be used, but I think a lot of people treat sleeping masks like pm moisturizers. If I was looking for a moisturizer review I could see that interpretation having a lot of value similar to the qualities identified in the Farmacy review. To me this type of review benefit can be even bigger with cosmetics products as 1 person's holy grail full coverage foundation will be someone else's cakey mess. Ultimately its the same reason I enjoy watching a channel like yours where you break down pros and cons in a way that lets me form my own decisions.
    One other thing I'll say is I don't like the cream skin as much as many other do (the vegan kombucha biphase one is better) and I think its for 2 reasons. The first is that I like using my toners/essences before serums and feel its a bit occlusive. I could change the order of products but don't want to... and to be quite honest I could see this product not working for a variety of people unless its used in a very specific way. The second is that I don't feel this meets the marketing representations. To me his is sold as a 2-in-1 essence/moisturizer. To many this would mean I cleanse my skin then apply this and I'm done. I don't see that working for any but the most oily people. Bottom line I think they made something so unique that, while its not objectively bad, I think it requires a bit more nuance in terms of use than I actually felt like giving it. I used my bottle during the winter and I stopped using it originally then brought it back to help serve as a buffer for actives as I was ramping up potentcy. The vegan kombucha essence serves what I want out of that type of product better, and doesn't feel like it interferes with absorption the same way. Though of course cream skin did "it" first and they deserve credit for that.
    As a final note, the glow recipe cleansing balm sucks. I think people only like it because they haven't tried good cleansing balms. I'm not even going to qualify that one and will leave it as my 1 star review of the day.

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  2 роки тому

      I suspect it’s the value of longer reviews. I gave up so quickly on short reviews, even in this very video, as it’s just too hard to glean helpful information from those. “Too watery” means nothing to me - I mean think of SK-II here. That’s a very watery product, and yet incredibly high impact in terms of results (at least for me haha, always that catch!) A watery texture does not immediately equate to BEING water!
      Also 100% agree on Dr. Ceuracle’s Essence being the superior product vs Laneige. I think you’re right that the Laneige excels as an almost occlusive “toner”, which I’ve found can have a place. But Dr. C knocks it out of the park for a multi-benefit hydrating and moisturizing toner/essence!

    • @masonjeq4261
      @masonjeq4261 2 роки тому

      @@AliceintheRabbitHole I mostly agree. I will say though some short reviews can give you a good reason to say no, especially if the complaints are in volume. For example if you don't like scented skincare and you read 20 version of "omg it smells" that product may not be for you. Now since you don't know what it smells like it may not provide enough information to impact you if you are only averse to specific kinds of smells. It also depends on the type of product since I fully agree a watery toner means little, but I would probably think twice about a watery moisturizers. It all depends if we know what we're looking for and what they're describing.
      Interestingly enough I have a few triggers I just don't want to deal with. Like positive or negative if I see "gourmand" or "sweet" used to describe a cologne I know to veer far away as its not my taste. Similar for anything "full coverage" or "glittery" etc.

    I had a real white privilege moment. I REALLY wanted Too Faced Peach foundation and BTW sculpting concealer. I purchased so many different shades (like 3-4 shades), got help in store getting color matched and I just had to admit that Too Faced just doesn't want to sell to fair cool toned peoples. All of it was way too warm (orange) even if Too Faced called it a "cool" shade and they had so few fair shades. What they called "Porcelain" would have been a medium shade by any other brand. I was so frustrated and complaining until my white privilege slapped me in the face. This is a RARE occurrence for me as a fair skinned cool-toned complexion. How many people REALLY were excited and wanted to try a complexion product but were left feeling that the brand didn't see them, and didn't want them buying their product because they made nothing in their shade. For me, I really only had this issue with Too Faced, but for those with a darker complexion, there is so much where they just get left out.

      Too Faced isn’t the only brand that have yellow-based “cool toned” foundations. Juvia’s Place foundations have warm undertones, even the shades that have cool in the description. NARS cool foundations are the same way, and I’ve yet to find the right shade in the ABH line. I have trouble finding the right shade in Tarte and It! Cosmetics, too. The blue LA Girl foundation corrector that I bought hasn’t helped very much, either. It’s super frustrating, to say the least.
