  • Many of us appreciate the affordability of K-beauty products but there's a whole, wide world of luxury and pricey Korean skincare products out there! Those of us who know the quality you can find for a low price in K-beauty might be suspicious of more expensive products. Are they really better, are they worth it? Today I want to talk about 4 luxury K-beauty products and answer that very question; is expensive K-beauty worth the splurge?

    I keep telling myself the Amore Pacific essence isn't worth it...THEN I stop using it and change my mind. It's just THAT amazing for my skin. I have bought it multiple times but it really is so expensive for an essence. I only buy it when I can get it 20% off. That helps a little. 💜

      The results are hard to deny! I think this was the product I was most impressed of from the bunch, that green tea does work magic! It's crazy expensive but once you try it and understand the process behind it, it makes sense. Just always line your purchase up with the Sephora sale! 😂

      Kelly Driscoll UGH!! You guys are making me want to try this $$$$ product so much!! I mean, I’m willing to splurge on certain things, but it’s a bit hard to stomach for an essence. Def would only purchase with Sephora coupon or other sale.

      I have a deluxe sample of this that came in a an Ulta luxury beauty box that was on rock bottom clearance in January. I didn't realize what I had. I'll definitely try it now! Makes me wonder if someone is selling deluxe samples on Poshmark.

    I find it so interesting you only reviewed brands owned by AmorePacific (it's the main company that owns its namesake AmorePacific, Sulwhaso, Primera, and Laneige, among others -- like Innisfree, Etude House, Hera, Illiyoon, etc.). That's why you see a lot of overlap in extracts (green tea, for example) and some of the technology feels familiar, although Laneige is more diluted than AmorePaciific. (But is AmorePacific worth 3-4x the price of Laneige...? Who knows... I'd say probably not, esp. if you're on budget. Like you said, a lot of it is about the experience of pampering yourself with expensive products that feel nice and smell nice.) Sulwhasoo and AmorePacific are both totally lux and expensive, and they do have their own signature scent. I'm not a huge fan of AmorePacific's signature scent, but I use their enzyme peel because it works and I can wash it off so quickly. Sulwhasoo's products also have their own signature scent within the sub-lines (their Snowise (refreshing) smells very differently from their Essential (mildly herby/floral)...and they're very different from Concentrated Ginseng (ginseng + honey)...and Timetreasure (pine)) The Whoo is another luxury brand on par with Sulwhasoo, and The Whoo is owned by LG (Yeah, the company we only think of as the one that makes TVs and fridges, etc.). I'm not a huge fan of The Whoo scent. And do you know Samsung also has skincare brand in Korea? (This one isn't luxury, but very good anyway).
    I do like Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum. But my skin tolerates fragrance, and I do layer other products on top very quickly (I layer lots of hydrating products). I really like Primera Miracle Seed Essence also, and I might try your cotton pad method -- I've been using hands because I'm lazy. I also scored 2 jumbo bottles for cheap when I was in Korea in winter.
    If you want to grab AmorePacific Single Vintage Extract Essence without selling your kidney, try duty-free in Korea if you're every in the country OR transit/layover via Seoul (Incheon Airport). You can order and prepay for items on their web store (Shilla Duty Free is the most foreign shopper friendly in my experience) and they have promotions, coupons, etc. (They're called 'mileage' but many can be used instantly). You just go to a designated area to pick it up (you need to show your passport & boarding pass). If you don't pick them up for whatever reason, you can request for cancellation / refund OR they refund automatically after 30 days. Their K-Beauty products are often anywhere from 15-35% cheaper than Sephora and other American stores. I bougth over a year's worth of K-beauty products and masks so, so cheaply.

    Yes Kelly, I am so glad you talked about the Primera essence! I am more than halfway through my first bottle and I have enjoyed it so much. I did buy it on sale but find that it’s best to buy it through YesStyle. I do love the curtains that come with it it does make the essence feel more hydrating for sure. I probably wouldn’t try any of the other products, I just try to stay away from anything fragrant especially with EO’s. I did however just find out that the Purito comfy water sunblock, the physical one, has just been released EO free!! Yay! I ordered it so fast and cannot wait to try it. 😌😊

    Liah Yoo talks about Prima seed essence all the time. She always talks about the hydration power of this essence. it's on my wish list, but I still can't justify the price. I think I'll work thru the more affordable options of my wish list first lol. Kelly, how would you compare Primera seed essence to your favorite hydrating essences/toners?

    • @KellyDriscoll
      @KellyDriscoll  5 років тому +2

      It's pricey for sure, wait for a sale on yesstyle and maybe a coupon, I think you could get a decent price this way! Hmmm it's hard to say but the first that came to my mind this the jin jung sung essence, very similar in terms of deep hydration in just one layer.

  • @ethanhouser415

    I prefer the Iope Bio Essence over Primera Miracle Seed. I LOVE the Amore Pacific Essential Fluid UGHH SO GOOD. I dont mind the scent and it didnt irritate my skin at ALL my skin drank it up. But as far as essences go, IOPE BIO ESSENCE ALL THE WAY. So hydrating, improves redness and texture and is affordable.

    About luxury products in general, another “experience” additive I sometimes see besides fragrance is silicone. One specific product that has it is Sunday Riley Good Genes serum (which does the sneaky thing of including two very similar silicones so they appear lower on the ingredient list than just one would), and so many reviews attribute the immediate smoothing effect to the lactic acid and other ingredients, and I’m like, ummm.... probably not. I’m personally not a fan of silicone anywhere besides top layers, since it can seal out the benefits of your later layers. But, anyway, I think silicone is in luxury products to make them feel silky smooth and fancy, but it’s a cheap ingredient, so if I’m going to splurge on a product, it’s a no thank you for me.
    About the Primera, I think it’s fair to call it luxury considering the cost per application if you’re using 2.5ml every time. I kinda think that much of any decent essence would leave your skin pretty plump. I actually tried it this morning with the otherwise unremarkable Cosrx Galactomyces tone balancing essence. 2.5 ml is 1/2 teaspoon, so I used a measuring spoon... 12 pumps, and you definitely do need a cotton pad, don’t you? Anyway, after that, my skin is looking pretty bouncy and awake, which is a lot more than I expect from normal usage with that essence!

    • @KellyDriscoll
      @KellyDriscoll  5 років тому +2

      Ugh yes silicones in expensive products. Nothing wrong with the ingredient itself but I totally feel like it's a lazy/cheap way around formulating a product. Particularly disappointing when you consider the expensive price tag of a brand like Sunday Riley!
      Omg cost per application of the primera is a bit crazy, it really does go down quickly, seems like they want you to use a bottle a month! 🙈I'm unsure why the 2.5ml seems to work, although you can get away with a little bit less with same benefits, but interesting to note you could get the same effect with other products!

    I bought that Amore Pacific and while I like it, I'm disappointed to say I wasn't blown away by it. Plus I just don't find the price worth it to see any huge differences in my skin...then again I already have clear skin so I'm not sure what my skin goals really are aside from lessening my sun spots. I would say, I do like the consistency and very little ingredients of this product.

    Thank you for your review! Always been curious about the sulwasoo brand, but never tried it. I recently splurged and tried the primera essence and do like it. However, it is not my HG product. Not sure if I will be repurchasing it. Thanks for the tip on using cotton pad. Been using it since I saw that on your insta and definitely notice better hydration and faster absorption.
    How does the purito green level unscented sunscreen compare to comfy water sunblock? I am leaning towards the comfy one.

    • @KellyDriscoll
      @KellyDriscoll  5 років тому

      I have no idea why it works better with a cotton pad but I'm going with it! 😂It's super nice but I agree, it's pricey to restock and maybe not HG status, we'll see how I feel when the bottle is gone, that's when I can start to miss products!
      Biggest difference is the finish, centella sunscreen is more neutral and the comfy waterblock is a touch more matte. If need a little oil control go for the comfy but if you'e dehydrated or dry the centella will jive better with your skin!

      I'm currently using SK-ii essence and innisfree is coming. Personally, looking at the ingredients list of SK-ii, I wasn't amazed, but I hoped for a miracle. I'm using it with the lotion, aura serum and rna cream. The result is my skin became smoother, pores smaller, however every morning I wake up, I had so much oil on my face that I had to wash my face immediately. I kinda think that the smoothing effect came from cream because it contains niacinamide. My verdict with this brand is they are good but not worth the 💰. Actually, I took photos of my skin every week and after 2 month of using, my skin didn't change visually, I still have red bumps, just each morning after cleansing I feel smoother and looks like pores are smaller, then in afternoon everything become the same again . I will try other cheaper brands and see if they give the same effect. SK-ii is just happened to be my first skincare brand.

    The essence destroyed my skin! I used it once and had a severe contact dermatitis that left my skin burning, itchy, bumpy, swollen and very red for a couple of weeks. I also saw multiple similar reviews of a similar reaction on the site that I got it from. I still wonder which ingredient it was that made my skin react like that. 🙁 Please do a patch test first.

    Sensorial experience, on touching, smelling, and feeling the products, is definitely an essential part of luxury K-beauty. I personally would not spend on the Amorepacific Vintage Single Extract Essence, and would rather choose to use black tea water on my face lol. At least I can drink half of it and use the other half as a hydrating splash .....roflmao....

    How does the primera miracle seed essence compare to the keep cool bamboo toner?

    • @KellyDriscoll
      @KellyDriscoll  5 років тому

      Hmm I use them a little differently, Primera I use as a first essence or booster so just one layer and it does have some brightening to it. Keep Cool is more of a pure hydrator that I love to layer up about 3x! It's a hydration bomb as well but a little thiner texture, no real brightening benefits on the keep cool toner.

    I would gladly buy a luxury skincare product based off high quality ingredients, sourcing, and beautiful packaging. Not scent. Seeing perfume or any fragrant components listed in facial skin care is an immediate turn off for me and I would never buy it. It's such a shame because there's sooo many products I'd love to try, but I'm not paying a premium price when it comes with the risk of the perfume irritating my skin!
