  • Machining needed lathe parts for Joe Hildreth, owner of UA-cam Channel “My Heap”.
    Joe’s Channel on UA-cam: / @myheap
    My Heap Website: www.myheap.com
I have been following his restoration on his TH54 Atlas Lathe and he needed some parts for his tailstock machined so I volunteered my services to try to help him get his lathe up and running. He needed a custom bolt and washer made for his quill lock mechanism. Please subscribe and click the notifications “bell” to get notified of newly released videos. Thanks for Watching!

Rich, I cannot express how much I appreciate your help and support for my lathe and channel. Thank you sir. BTW, I would not have thought to use a center drill for a dead center. Does it try to cut into the center at all? Great video Rich.

You are very welcome Joe, best of luck going forward with your Lathe and Channel. The tiny center drill works great for supporting small diameter stock. Its hardened steel and wont score...they are tougher material than will ever be chucked for turning. Thanks Joe~ All The Best!
      Rich 😊

That was a neat trick using the aluminum block for indexing your milling operation. Also making the "collet" for holding the square stock in the 3-jaw. Way to put that lathe to work!

Now that is a proper machine washer.

That was Great Richard, liked the ideal with the little Center Drill. I use a little harden shank held in my drill chuck for the same purpose. Keep up the good work. Steve Summers

I recently made a small hardened 60 degree for scoring the face of the gyroscope flywheels but a 1/4-20 is tiny and the center drill works really good. Align the flutes right and you can get your bit in very, very close. Plus...it was already chucked up :) Thanks for watching. ~ Rich :)

Yeah , it would allow for great clearance and still support the part. very resourceful. Keep up the good work, Thumbs up on the video and your production / editing, always very very nice. I know you work hard at it cause
is shows. Thanks for the ideas SteveSummers

Great work arounds Richard, the cut tube holding the round, great, the milling operation, well done, the centre drill dead centre, who'd thought. Good to see the support and promoting of a fellow youtuber. Thanks Peter

2:28 Ooooooh clever using the quill like that! 4:30 Measure twice cut once. Brainfarts exist D: 6:03 Didn't you make a center just for that purpose? 9:35 I feel like there's better ways to do this. But that's super clever, using the tool post's squareness to index! As you found out, you should've "used your noggin" and also prepared the stock to be reliable to index with :P ... outstanding job either way. Nice, clean and fast.

Learned a lot on this one...the mistake wont be repeated in the future for sure! :) Ohhh, and I am quite positive there are better ways to do this...its what my idea packed mind came up with first. Much better machinists out there than this old guy! :)

The 1/2 dead center I made was even too large for the little 1/4-20 bolt but the tiny center drill worked perfect for that application

i was wondering if you had centered a square piece in a 3 jaw , i wouldve used a 4 jaw , does mean more work on converting the lathe though

Thanks Dean, I hope the few thou isnt an issue. I dont think it will be, the square head fits a recess and just keeps the bolt from spinning

Well the great thing about steel is that it is soooo easy to add or subtract from. A shim or 2 licks of a file and the deed is done eh !

good to see you spread the love.....it looks like you have an Atlas lathe too, can i ask what collet system you were using it looks very neat.

LOL, you will only need to watch 40 seconds worth......its the black faced collett, which your using to hold the milling cutter

Lmao!, ohhh that one! 😊 Its an ER32 collet chuck in the headstock. One of my first tooling buys was an ER32 collet set for the lathe. Its a Commercial Atlas 12x36, good lathe but it doesnt like parting steel

top man that's useful stuff. i have a 3 and 4 jaw but a Collett would be helpful, thanks for answering and helping me along.. . . . SUBSCRIBED :)
