This was made all that more evident to me when my wife was diagnosed with dementia at age 60. Very happily we both retired at age 56 so we had four wonderful years of that. Here we are three years later after her diagnosis and I’m her full-time caregiver. She’s completely reliant on me for every single thing in the course of the day and I feel more like a full-time servant than a retiree. However, after 46 years together, I love her as much as ever and I’m completely dedicated and devoted to making her remaining days on earth as comfortable and safe as possible but this is a rough existence at this stage of life and I am exhausted and emotionally drained. After that, I suppose I will have to regroup and pick up the pieces again and try to enjoy my remaining years. This came right out of the blue… No indicators, no lifestyle factors, no genetic factors, nothing.

I can relate to this message perfectly. I am turning 63 and my wife is 62. We both retired at 54. We had a holiday planned for Canada in 2020 including a Holland America cruise in Alaska and then the pandemic stopped us from going. Since that time we have lost both my wife's mother and my mother in the last two years but we were now ready to travel again. We had two big holidays planned by the end of this year including New Zealand and both have had to be cancelled. My wife has been diagnosed with Marginal Zone Lymphoma a rare form of cancer and has to begin Immunotherapy and Chemotherapy in two weeks time. We are devastated by the news and pray the treatment works. Having money and holidays are not important now. Health is your most important asset. Truer words have never been said.

Yes, I’m 79 so looking at the big eight zero next year. We are making the most of it, going away every few weeks hiking, cycling or skiing.
You are right, health is so important and although you can’t control fate you can at least give yourself the best chance through diet and exercise.

A year ago, I was an elite pro powerlifter. After 13 years of competing, my spine required surgery this May. Two months later, my annual mammogram revealed breast cancer. I'm 6 weeks out of a successful lumpectomy and genomic testing shows the cancer is a high risk of returning to another body part within 5 years. I am so glad that I had the spine surgery before this cancer diagnosis. I had been in so much pain that it would have made this current situation so much worse. Yes, you can't take your good health for granted because things can change in a moment.

We were saying this same thing this week! Getting outside in the fresh air, walking (in our case walking the beach as that is where we live), making sure to spend time socializing, and eating healthier. Our neighbors, also in their 70s, are unfortunately no longer to do many of these things due to health problems. We have a new commitment to guarding our health!

You are so right! I always did a lot of travelling (thankfully) and thought I would continue indefinitely. 63, retired a year ago, and my MS has now become a huge limiting factor. Daily living is still very doable, but a ton of planning has to go into every overnight away now, so it doesn’t take weeks to recover. Now I am focused on making my home life fulfilling enough so I don’t actually want to leave much. My mom died at 57 (brain tumour) so I consider myself extremely lucky to have retirement years to enjoy, travel or not.

Good advice!! Several years back, I had some travel ideas that I was thinking of doing once I retired. Then there were some changes in my life, and I decided not to wait. I started doing my travel sooner, and it has been such a life changer. I guess I now take the attitude that, if I find myself incarcerated in some senior's home, I'd rather look back and say, "I'm glad I did it", rather than look back and say, "I wish I did."

My husband has parkinsons but we can still travel. I have been trying to tell him that we must do the things we really want to do now, he is 66 and I am 68. Who knows how long his Parkinsons will be this manageable but he tends to think of the money rather than his health. I'm afraid we will put off these trips and then in a few years when he wants to do them it will be too late.

We dont consider travel anymore as we just dont want to deal with the airport.
Funny, when you spoke about the Algarve on one of your shows i said to my wife why didnt we go more often since we had such a good time the year i retired.(24 yrs ago) . keep reminding folks that you need to do it while you can..

I retired at age 53, so I am in my early 60s. Many of them resisted me because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if it wasn't necessary. I considered the phases of my life. I worked very hard to achieve what I have now, but in my last years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses." In my instance, I departed the nation after retiring and currently reside in Latin America. It made it possible for me to appreciate my new surroundings while escaping all the bad things that were going on in America. Nobody that I know of regrets retiring has yet to come to me.

  • @ddavidson5
    @ddavidson5 2 дні тому +3

I think you two have the right approach. The early years of retirement are going to be the years when you have the most energy and the best health, they don't call them the "go-go years" for nothing. Still, it can be a difficult transition to make. After decades of planning and "saving for the future" old habits die hard. It is sometimes difficult to realize when you are retired that the future you anticipated and were saving for has arrived.
I also think we all believe that as we age we'll be pretty much the same as we are now, a few more aches and pains, a little slower perhaps, but pretty much the same. The truth is it's not like that and you'd best get out there and enjoy your retirement while you can. Those "slow-go" retirement years generally start in your early to mid-70s and there's no sense in letting the money you saved to enjoy your retirement sit in the bank "just in case".
I will have been retired 10 years next May and I recommend to retirees you spend your retirement savings enjoying your actual retirement especially in the early and most healthy years.

I'm 64 as of today and I've been disabled from my job for quite a long time already. Also a few months before our fifth wedding anniversary, my husband was diagnosed with a serious cancer and he passed away 8 years after that. So we only were married 13 years and although we did do some travel and other fun things, it certainly wasn't what either one of us had planned. That being said we were both working full-time and only had a couple weeks off a year that we could do anything substantial. So retirement is definitely a time to fulfill those dreams.❤

WE have never postponed any travel and started travel extensively in our 40ties as soon as we immigrated to Canada from Europe. YOu do not have to retire to do that though. It is actually helps with the budget for interesting and not very cheap travel. If I would retire, I would never afford travelling the way we did and continue doing in our 60 ties. So, I would encourage everybody to work at least part time to lead a better life adn make dream vacation affordable. In regards to health: this is superimportant. But I would not stop just with doing biking and swimming. Most improtant: start doing HIIT (to keep your heart healthy) and resistant training/ weight lifting to keep your muscles toned (prevent sarcopenia and keep your cognition fro years to come)

Thank you for this. You're so right (as usual!) - one is well until one isn't suddenly. But not to forget: health is body & soul.
In retirement we have time to cultivate spirit, heal relationships, volunteer, give. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving is one recipe, gratitude, kindness and charity another. If we include some kind of faith practice into our health regimens we can die happy. Wholistic health encompasses all the aches and pains, including those formed by memories and mistakes. This is not a time for withering but for rigorous preparation.

I wonder how many people really work on their health and longevity? When I go to the gym it's almost always rare to see anyone over 60 in there. It seems to be more that people decide that being sedentary and drinking a lot and eating a lot as some kind of retirement rite of passage. My friend laughed when I said how about getting in good shape and trying to get a few more good active years out of life.

I suspect these folks didnt travel much when they were young. I suspect they did great work things and parenting things. I dont care about travel , i did plenty. I didnt parent , but my gf has two 30 odd yr olds. Lucky me. Its such a precious thing this life

My husband and I had been discussing how burnt out we've been on recent trips with such crowds.... But you're right, we've never regretted that we took the trip. So this has been very inspiring and we will plan more in the months ahead. Thank you 🙏🏻

Hi Tina and Norm. Hope your voyage is going fantastically well! 🛳️
That’s great! Doing what you like to do in retirement! Which happens to be travelling.
    Good for you!
You are fortunate and made it financially possible to allow yourselves to do want you like and want to do, now in retirement years.
    Enjoy, enjoy. enjoy!!!!! 🤩
I’m more of a “let’s do it NOW”, person. Don’t want to put things off. 😂
    Take care and keep safe!
    Sam 🌷
