- England take a huge step towards qualifying for Euro 88 by winning a home qualifier 2-0 against Yugoslavia in November 1986. Without key men Bryan Robson and Peter Shilton, England have to withstand a fair bit of pressure against a decent Yugoslavia side who miss a series of good chances. Gary Mabbutt returns to the England fold and opens the scoring, before Viv Anderson wraps it up. England will go on to reach the finals without losing any qualifying games.
Thank you! I was there. Aged 9. Mexico '86 was the start of my football obsession, so my Dad took me to see England at Wembley. All I could remember was the score, & Hoddle & Hodge hitting heads.
Same here!!!! Got hooked on football courtesy Mexico 86. England came out of that tournament a better team and with the best striker partnership in the World. It probably heralded the end of Ray Wilkins and was the begining of the end for Bryan Robson though

As usual Yugoslavia play all the football but don't back it up with practical things like scoring goals and keeping clean sheets.
How many chances for my Yugoslavia! 30-40 sec after the chance on 5:29 Zlatko Vujovic had another one, completely same as the previous and again missed the empty gol!!!, but it isn't shown in the video. In fact, even in live broadcast we saw only when he passed the goalkeeper and hit the net from outside because on TV went slow motion of the previous chance.

@@ivosaric7885 Zlatko je kao mlad igrac bio senzacija , trpao je golove i za Hajduk i za reprezentaciju , sto je vise stario sve je manje golova davao , ali ipak Zlatko je moj najomiljeniji fudbaler ikada , zbog brace Vujovic zavolio sam Hajduk
I watched this live on TV in Yugoslavia. Vujovic's missed chances were like daggers in the heart.
Trebalo mu je 5-6 stopostotnih šansi da bi zabio 1 gol. Igrač loše tehnike i razumijevanja igre. Zato i nije napravio neku karijeru. Brz i izdržljiv.

This was typical of how many England home games used to play out. The opposition would craft a number of of chances but fluff their lines at the sharp end. England would generally be clinical with anything that came their way. England still had an aura about them at Wembley.
lucky possibly , but England showed their class in the return fixture winning 4-1 in Belgrade, and could have been 6 by half time. Waddle, Barnes, Hoddle, Wilkins,Beardsley,Robson, Lineker, Anderson, Sansom, Butcher, Shilton, etc that era had more talent in it than the last 2 generations of England teams

Yep I have said it a million times, after England lost against Iceland...from the late 1970's to 1990 England had some very good teams and players (in 1982 they did not lose a game in the whole tourney, Brazil did not match that!, Q/F in Mexico '86' and semi in 1990...The record in Euros was not good but historically the English have never attached that much importance to it, in '88' they had a bloody hard group...outclassed the Irish but could not score and Holland and the Soviet Union were the eventual finalists...Yugoslavia were always a tough and classy outfit...

This was my first ever visit to Wembley. I can't believe how much I'd forgotten. I only remember the Mabbut goal. What a player Hoddle was we had several skilful players then.

I went to this game with my school aged 9 and took my uncles fog horn. You can hear it in this footage. 90k supporters conducted by a 9 year old hahahaha

When it comes for speed, possibly the fastest player in the world in that time. But lacking his cool in front of the goal.
@@sonjavukoja4936 Zlatko was one of the best players in the world during Word Cup qualifiers in 1981 but after that never lived up to his potential. Won a lot of caps though.
@@Ruda-n4h , watched Zlatko Vujovic live, as a small girl with my late dad, during communist Yugoslavia! Extraordinary player, his mentality, fighting spirit, true sprinter, he could cover 100m in 10.5 seconds. He still does recreative runs in Split, as a 63 yrs old, he jogs and keeps his body in good shape! Example to all how to continue with sporty life in late ages! Greetings from Croatia!
