Here’s a bare-bones explanation of my unifying theory for Ico, Shadows of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.
The civilization which constructed everything was founded on their ability to use light magic in their technology. They discovered the Trico species, and used it as part of a project where they extracted a shadowy power from people and condensed it into a single mass in a tower hidden within a hollowed out plateau.
This shadowy mass became conscious and began infecting the technology, turning it to its own purposes, and started using the Trico to harvest everyone to grow its power. This led to the civilization’s collapse, the survivors being pushed further and further away to avoid the great flying beasts.
In the events of the Last Guardian, the boy is taken to be an offering, but he had been further away than the Trico had ever flown before, and it grew weary and crashed before reaching the tower. It was bound as to not cause trouble until it was healed and could be fitted with new armor which would extend the effects of the mind-controlling harmonic fields built into the tower. But instead the boy was regurgitated, and formed a bond with the unbound Trico, and removed the armor, leading to the events of the rest of the game. (The areas in the game where the cage-like area makes Trico eat you appear to be mind control, and I suspect that the armored Trico complete their tasks because they’re under its influence, whereas the Trico you befriend in the story regurgitates the boy in a safe location after leaving the area of effect, instead of taking him all the way to the top of the tower.)
At the end of the game, the tower is destroyed and the Master of the Valley is released, though far weaker than it desired. As the tower began collapsing on itself, the Master pulled what energy it had placed in the Trico to reinforce itself, causing them to back away and fall (presumably to their deaths), while the two who had been stripped of their armor remained, the Master’s influence already having faded from them.
Thus the shadow-entity, this “Master of the Valley” moves to another temple where its power can grow, eventually taking the name “Dormin”. There it draws life energy from the land, which kills everything there creating the Forbidden Land. Seeing the severity of the situation, the remnants of the original civilization band together and manage to rend Dormin’s power, trapping pieces of its essence in various parts of the land. Content that Dormin was contained, they retreated from the Forbidden Lands and enacted a the policy of sacrificing anyone who showed signs of the magical energies Dormin consisted of (to ensure that the power wasn’t added to Dormin’s , giving it a chance to escape).
But after one such sacrifice, a boy decided to steal the magical sword used to bind Dormin as well as the girl’s body, and deliberately go to the Forbidden Lands to do exactly the opposite of what the sacrifice was intended for. This leads into the events of Shadows of the Colosus.
At the end of the game, Dormin is bound again, this time pulled into a portal, though its power (or at least a part of it) resides in the boy who’d restored it. The boy was turned into a baby with horns, and over time grew up and had descendents who were born with horns, who would in turn be sacrificed for the purpose of preventing Dormin’s return. This leads into the events of Ico.
Ico is taken to the temple for sacrifice, because the villages had concluded that straight up killing the children themselves was what led to Dormin’s release, and as such they made a deal with a woman to seal away the children in her castle where their essences wouldn’t feed Dormin when they die, but they also wouldn’t provoke rebellion such as what Wanderer did.
But unknown to the people, Dormin had already begun working its way back into their world, and had made its own deal with the woman, claiming that it could give her immortality by transferring her mind into her daughter’s body, and in exchange, she was collecting the fragments of Dormin’s essence from the children, much like how the Wanderer collected the fragments from the Colossae.
But in the end the castle begins to collapse, and it Dormin sets the boy free on a boat, and then releases the girl. I suspect that Dormin must reside within a temple or castle to exist, and that with the collapse of the castle, Dormin was forced to flee again to another structure, and that the boy and girl were released because under those conditions Dormin had nothing to gain by killing them.
Bill 1138 except a lightning bolt hit Trico and that's what made him crash
+Bryce Gubernik,
Yes, the immediate cause of the crash is Trico getting struck by lightning, but the minute leading up to getting struck shows him to be fatiguing (the slow blink followed by not opening his eyes all the way, drifting with the wind more than usual, etc).
Was that the only issue you found?
Bill 1138 uuhhh yeah he was fatigued because he has 2 spears in him... He was wounded from the battle in the village. You pull the spears out of him in the cave which enables him to recover.... Did you even play the game?
Bryce Gubernik If you want to argue for the sake of arguing, you'll have to go somewhere else. What we're saying isn't mutually exclusive.
This is very close to what I had been thinking after I finished the game. The only difference for me is that in these games "horns" are big markers for the presence of evil, so I think the tower has been extracting power (either inherently evil or corrupted by the extraction) from the trico-things. When Dormin manifests the horns are a remnant of the trico-thing life force.
They ALL share the same world. Team ICO said in the release time of SotC it was a prequel to ICO. TLG while not stated, it a prequel to SotC, it has easter eggs or actual locations of the main rooms seen in SotC and ICO. the 1st is the pool room of SotC, but much, much newer than it's seen in SotC. and later on about 1/3 of the way through TLG a room looks near on a copy of the suspended cage prison the princess from ICO is kept in at the beginning. The bigger connection between all three games however is the shadow soldiers they do exactly the same thing in TLG as what they do in ICO but they lack armour in ICO. the armour designs are highly reminiscent of SotC, but Ueda would have to be questioned about the armour versus what we saw in SotC for the simple reason being, the eyes. it's obvious a ps2 lacks the ability to be as detailed as TLG is, but when you see a trico in the mask, thier eyes can look just like a colossus', while in the few sections your Trico is in pure darkness it looks almost exactly like a up to date model of the evil god Dormin from SotC.
TLG even shows us the village for the first time. If this is the main connection between the series. It's here we get the myths and legends of sacrificing children to the old god. Wanda if I recall steals the sword from the village when he sneaks Mono the girl off to be resurrected by dormin. most of which is outlined from both english and japanese instruction manuals, and tidbits from the official strategy guide. It's quite possible the sword and shield exist in the village, but Wanda only thinks to take the sword, as it has the power to guide, while the shield would be useless without a trico which would potentially be extinct, or on the verge of exinction, and kept to themselves.
Years later still ICO happens and it is suggestive the queen has Dormin's powers, as she can command the shadow army in effort to secure the princess for her immortal youth ritual, but ICO commands the powers of Wanda the hero who sacrificed everything for another.
While possibly yet another easter egg I just recalled there is a old man villager about 3/4 of the way through the game that appears wearing the same outfit as the old man who comes to the tower in SotC minus his panda mask.
There are plenty of connections but you have to look on a dark souls level of details and in-between the line features to see them.
Holy shit balls! That is fascinating. Thank you for sharing friend! :D
8-BitLane lol no worries. I was scarily addicted to SotC, and played Ico a lot back when it was a new release. There are even scrapped Colossai (that is the correct plural btw) that were made, but not put into the game because they felt too similar or they just didn't have enough dev time to put some of them in the game, it's why the world feels so big and empty in some spots.there is video of a few of them, most are just concept art now though.
Damn that is some fascinating stuff but it doesn't surprise that they wanted to add more because it's such a vast open world. Hopefully if TLG does really well they'll consider making a sotc remake/reboot or something since the technoology has come so far since then they could add so much more to the game maybe even side missions that would be sort of mini colossai like the bull one in the original game then have like slow build ups to the large ones. Idk lol just would be really awesome.
you should read a bit on shadow of the colossus back story , Wander stole the sacred sword and his girlfriend / wife body after hearing the tale of the forbidden land. The tale says that Dormin , some kind of evil horned monster, that was living in the forbidden land got captured. To seal its power , Those who captured him, split Dormin's essence into 16 different parts which were then concealed into 16 colossi. They then created 16 colossi statues which contained lights essence that if channeled into a dead body can bring someone back to life. The only way to destroy those stone colossi is to kill the colossus the statue represent. What Wander didn't know is that upon killing a colossus , the part of Dormin's essence contained within enters Wander's body , Transforming him into Dormin at the end of the game, after killing the last colossus. After the fight , Dormin / you , get sucked into some kind of storm , created within the fountain in the tower and disappear. The last thing you see is the revived girl going to the fountain and finding a small child , with horns on its head. Same horns you can find over the head of the boy you control in Ico ( not saying it's the same boy , in fact, it's probably not since Shadow of the colossus is supposed to happen way before Ico. ) I have very little knowledge of Ico as I've never finished it. As far as I know , TLG could sit after SOC , after ICO , or even before SOC.
See yea I never got the chance to play ico so my knowledge about that is very blurred, but all of this is very interesting I wish I could go back and read up on a little of the back story of sotc and ico but i unfortuanately don't have the time but thank you so much for sharing this info! :D
You’re saying trico wrong
Does anyone else want a Shadow of the Colossus remaster or is it just me? Still love the game
Rage Kings I do
Shy Guy Asian now it’s free too
If you havent played it on PS4 yet it looks MAJESTIC. Breath of the Wild be damned
Maybe you should finish the game before making theories?
lol that's the point of me saying in the beginning "take everything with a grain of salt"
maybe you should pay attention to what he said in the video before making a comment
8-BitLane have you played it now? if you do go make part 2. I havent watched the video btw, this ad just wont load ffs
The name Trico was the project name given to the game by the developers who were aware of the name fans dubbed the creature YEARS ago when it was very first announced 10,000 years ago. What I find interesting is the recurring theme of horns in every game. THAT would be the link I would start my theories on.
Very interesting, haven't thought about most of it. Congrats man :)
thanks dude :D
the way u pronounce trico is tree-ko not try-ko
i know i figured that out after the vid lol thanks
They are all the same world, shadow of the colossus ended in wonder reverting to a baby but cursed with horns, this curse will affect his bloodline. Years later this brings us to ico and the children with horns are banished from their tribe due to the curse and wonders bloodline. I’m not sure where the last guardian fits in this but I’m sure it has some sort of connection with these games
Wander stole the sword from Emon
Tbh it seems that last guardian is prequel to shadow as SOTC is prequel to ico.
Your mask idea about trico makes me think that this is the "valley" that later becomes the forbidden lands in sotc,
It is known that when dormin was being sealed they embued his essence into the land thus creating the colossi.
Now this makes me think that perhaps the mask on trico was some form or seal like the magic seal on dormin thru 16 colossi.
Trico much smaller and clearly not a colossi as they are different species/beings. This could be argued against but seems most logical.
This being said the ritual to seal trico wouldn't need to be as powerful as sealing dormin.
The colossi seem to have been a by product of their best option to seal dormin. Like a necessary evil.
The trico beings seem more natural.
Max derrat points out in his analysis videos that turquoise light and the opposing shadow darkness is the biggest metaphor the symbols in game have to offer.
Trico has eyes like the colossi orange hostile and turqoise passive so personally I believe all beings (gods included(dormin, the master. The queen) in the ico universe have this inherent energy inside them both shadow and turquoise light, the master was seemingly a god made of light energy, dormin and the queen a shadow. Thus being high ends of the spectrum they lack their opposing quality for god like status in their respective alignment.
So all of this said. Tricos mask seemed a similar seal of imprisonment to that of the colossis creation.
We know that people in the forbidden land sealed dormin so its logical to assume the technology or magic that sealed dormin came from this valley in the last guardian.
Last guardian ends showing tricos species continuation. Implying more than happy endings. It's important. The tricos must live so they can be used to seal dormin in the creation of the colossi.
My belief is that the ritual to seal dormin involved killing these tricos and harvesting the turqoise energy they consume constantly (the light) to seal pieces of dormin into the land in the valley thus killing off the remaining tricos and then evacuating the newly dubbed forbidden land and thus all civilized life in the valley/forbidden land ceased. All that's left is insects lizards small birds. Thing unthreatened by colossi and able to survive off the creatures and fauna available in the forbidden lands.
Grim indeed but with the way they tied the games together in the same universe and strong prequel notions of sotc to ico. It strengthens why I believe it's a prequel and the valley is the forbidden land before it was forbidden, hence the same architecture yet no colossi in last guardian.
Tricos species were the precursor necessary to stop dormin when he arose.
Furthermore I think personally the master and dormin are different entities but I believe it's the same energy being transferred. Tge masters defeat imo allowed dormin to culminate slowly into being. As if adopting the masters power or rather inheriting it. And same with the queen I think she was able to become into being only because dormin was ultimately defeated. Energy doesnt dissipate.
The darkness keeps being reborn as does the light with every game.
Every game just shows very clearly the protagonist embodiment of light dying and being reborn again in the ending.
We may not clearly see this for the master dormin and the queen but it seems logical the antoginsts dark energy also is reborn. The never ending cycle of life and death light and shadow. An endless waltz between good and evil perpetuated by seemingly destiny.
Ultimately in ico I always thought that ico lived on clearly. And yorda either died to save him. Or became the next queen. Or perhaps ico is the final ending story where light trumps darkness and yordas assimilation of the queen was light overtaking the reigns from dark.
But I find it more likely universal natural balance is at play here. And the message is it even affects the beings we would see and assume to be "gods".
The games ultimate message is even the gods are bound by our universal laws, they are more the cause of random events of nature just as we humans or anything else in the universe. We all randomly grew from dust.
Even powerful beings such as gods had to come from somehwere. Logically they are just beings evolved over extremely long periods of time, Subject to the random and often cruel nature of the universe and its laws and rules just as every other bring or lifeform in the known universe.
Balance is everything.
very interesting I subbed
Awesome! :D
The last guardian is before shadow of the colossus. Cursed lands is the same location as a nest, but after many years. Just nest with full of sand. What do you thinking about that? End sword was stolen from the village....
but it's not, because the place where TLG takes place is in a mountain range from the map.
I have a possible theory one a very big connection between these two games but I want to see if anyone figures it out and read people's opinions b4 I make a video so I'll leave you with a clue: has anyone really paid attention to a certain mask in SOTC ;)
hey, what mask are you talking about?
its been all but confirmed shadow of colossus is a prequel to ico.wander is ancestor of the horned children.the last guardian could be in its own stand alone universe or a different area and or time in the same world. I love ico, shadow of the colossus and the last guardian
bruh I'm legit part of the 8-bit family
OMG LONG LOST COUSIN!
its not tryco its trico
I'm on Xbox unfortunately, so I cant play this great game. I have watched it all though and it's honestly a great game. I just wish it had more answers because it feels like literally nothing has been answered
Names of each game:
ICO (production)
NICO (codename, SoTC = production)
TRICO (codename, TLG = production + name of monster).
The colossi are like jail cells for dormin's soul.
The colossi were made from resources around the are that they were locked away at.
first-time Watcher and based on what I have seen and my your videos this is what I've come up with.
• first off there is another video game that is rumored to be involved in this universe called Ico. never played it.
• the main question is not who is creating the colossi and Trico. The question is what are these ancient beings that are, by the looks of it, enslaving these creatures. Trico and the rest of the colossi, which I do believe are one in the same, for all we know are this universe's creatures just like the horses and the birds. maybe this ancient race, the ones that are putting armor on these creatures, the ones making the shadow figures, the ones making those armored figures, the ones making light shield and swords, the ones who are involved in every single thing in all 3 games are who we need to look at. what I believe is that these ancient individuals are the base of their religion, the ancient stories that we all hear about in our past coming to life. these three individuals text end up going deeper and finding more Roots into the good and bad side of it. in another theory video I watch, they mentioned that these individuals found some way to split humans Into Darkness and Light, that is why you get the shadow beings and the Guardians as well as the light barrels and the light that projects from Trico and The colossi. also you say that you don't see a weak point and Trico like the rest of the colossi... When it's staring at you right in the face. what is a weak point of a colossi? a glowing blue mark on the body... What are two things that you watch grow on top of tricos head? two giant glowing blue growths. which leads me also to the theory that the Last Guardian is a couple Generations before Shadow of the Colossus. Trico is an early Colossus, they don't need to have hidden weak points because they are still feared by everyone. they haven't had to adapt. known as hell still fairly well put together the nest and all the guards were. look how well the rest of the try goes where. this ancient race was still very strong in beliefs and had more power going on. however long later, you have Shadow of the Colossus, the scraping remnants of his former generation... Waiting for someone to come in and destroy their last work and give them the energy to take a willing soul and resurrect their power for one last hoorah... This universe can only go farther with Ico, the game I have not play. will add to this once I watch a game play on it. But this is what I have gathered so far. I do hope you read this, I do apologize that it is long. Again this is my first time watching you and you got me thinking
oh and I forgot my funny Theory
• on your mirror being a shield Theory, wouldn't it be funny if that same Shield was the shield that was used to trick Medusa? LOL! bit of a stretch but the landscape and dress code is kinda similar and HELLO!!! giant monsters....Greek Roman mythology...HAAA!!!
kratos all day, that is all
and because you got me thinking you have gained a subscriber good sir, I applaud you
Wonder from sotc stole that sword befor game start its meantioned at the end maybe the sword an shield where meant to be separated for a reason??
wander stole the sword.
Wander stole the sword from his village to save the girl
The colossai are shards of dormin
I think it the culture way before both games
wander stole the sword from the old lady
What if the child from last guardian is actually Lord emon from shadow of colossus? Also be stole the sword
Saw a video that thinks the boy in TLG could be Lord Emon in SotC
There's also the same lizards running around in TLG that there is in SotC.
this theory doesn't work correctly. the parts do not connect well. but I think the boy from the last guardian is Emon as a child. ICO happens after shadow of the Colossus. wander and mono repopulated the forbidden lands, creating a bloodline of children with horns (as seen in ICO). the setting of ICO is not to far from the forbidden lands (you can see the castle from ICO in shadow of the Colossus). the last guardian takes place before them both, when Emon was a child. after his adventure with Trico, Emon later became a religious leader (of some sort) of the village. somewhere in the time line of him being a religious leader, Emon realised that Dormin was an evil dark spirit and split his power into the sixteen colossi and abandoned the evil spirit in the forbidden lands, forcing Dormin to live the rest of eternity powerless and alone. later, Emon had a vision of a dark spirit and somewhere in the same dark vision he saw Mono. fearing that this connected to Dormin somehow, Emon ordered that the young girl be executed. she probably had some kind of relationship with wander, considering that this drove him to steal the ancient sword and seek out Dormin (who could revive the young girl). That's how I think all of this connects together.
and the last guardian took place in a valley
stopped listening at the point where you hadn't even bothered to check that yes Last Guardian is the third team ico game
Ok I can believe that Master of the Valley actually being past Dormin theory and that the Last Guardian is a prequel to a prequel. However from what I've seen ( I have yet to play the game) so far none of the areas in the game match up to the castle in ICO nor do they match up with the Forbidden Lands. Nothing is familiar there nothing jumps out. Everything else to me makes no since, the colossi don't wear masks maybe armor but it seems like its a part of their bodies. Another thing the Queen can't have Dormin's power because Dormin and the Wanderer merged at the end SOTC hence in ICO horned boys are sacrificed to the Queen to keep herself alive and in power. ICO is a descendant. I believe that TLG takes place in the same universe either before or after the other two games. I don't think its a literal direct sequel or prequel to the other tow games. All htree games just have common themes.
I think it's tlg , sotc then ico
ok have a idea here what if the light beings with strange markings at the end of last guardian.since they clearly control the trico to obtain energy from children are doing this to control other beast to take over that known universe of shadow of the colossus. being that in this game last guardian the shield is all that seems to be left and everything is myth or legend a great hit has been taken on the controller of this ancient power of light. seems that the force is very weak. lol where the trico or at lest one was hit with a lightning bolt pure energy and light awakens the inner being and it seems out of its trance and at the be gaining seemed tired of its mission of taking children and help caused a regression of power that it must gain back with eating the blue green goo. trico knew what needed to be done the markings on the boy seems to be a mental link between the two. as for the second trico at the end and during the game with fleeting moments of aggressive meetings a mut a fledgling growing with the other but afraid to disobey the masters call. but knowing at the end that it was right. i see a story of a greater being imprisoning lesser beings feeding off beings of great power they dont know they posses. and a revolt. bringing anew .. just a thought
maby the "points/seal" on the colossus was put there my whoever put away Dormin and the'y did not originaly have it.
Or it might be the third game of the same universe...
trico is pronounce treeko
The Universe Extend of SIE or SCE
i think the knights are dormans essence
aka shadow of the colossus
which is not where shadow of the colosass
took place
just watch nook n' cranny gaming video on the ending of sotc
Trico is the the 13th collosus - the last guardian/the last part of dormon - it's set in the same universe (maybe same place) but much later where the last guardian/collosus reproduced and made a species of collusi
The 13th Colossus is Phalanx.
or just play the game
have anger issues
sorry just got angry
Disliked due to your lack of education referring to this game. Obviously they are all connected, and if you had played the other two, Yes, there are TWO other games, then you'd see.
