I purchased an ambulance back in March 2022. In the process of converting. So far. Engine batteries, new tires and tuneup - oil change. Runs and drives great. Just installed my solar setup last week. EcoFlow Wave for air conditioning & diesel heater for heat. Keeping it really simple. I removed that chair and put in a gaming recliner. $150 on eBay. Can’t wait to hit the road.
I'm also currently converting an ambulance, and I agree with you about that swivel chair. It's a great seat, but it's very much in the way for a kitchen space. I'm planning to remove mine even though I kind of love it.
First thing we did after we got our ambo home: remove that chair! lol We have had ours for about 6 months and are feeling like making it a bit more comfortable. Like moving the bed to the back from the bench and elevating the sink / countertops and removing that cabinetry above it. Improving the existing solar & storage, diesel heater is next I think. Thanks for sharing!
Glad to see how far you've come brother. Wish I woulda picked your brain about some of these things when we were stationed together. I still remember your chair hammock. Looking forward to seeing more!
Check out New Jersey’s outdoor adventures UA-cam channel for the latest ambulance conversion where he had the shower in the front like you are talking. You might get some ideas from his conversion.
Super exciting to watch y’all take on this extraordinary adventure. Can’t wait to see the process that takes place on this ambulance and the expedition that awaits you two!
I am eventually going to be purchasing a retired Ambulance in the not to distant future, and have watching these Videos about doing various Ambulance to RV/Tiny Home Conversions, and I have to say, I love your Shower idea. It's the best Shower Idea yet that I have seen. But I also see more than 95% of the Ambulance to RV Conversions with the bed across the back doors. This may sound a bit crazy, but I am not in favor of that bed design for safety reasons. What happens if you are cooking dinner, and God forbid the unthinkable happens in the event of a fire that begins to consume the front, and side wall where your kitchen is, and it blocks your side door ? Now you have no choice but to go out the back, but have to climb over the bed to escape. That could be time consuming if your back doors are closed due to winter weather outside. Maybe it's just the Firefighter/EMT side of me, but when I finally do my Ambulance Conversion, the bed will be created from the bench seat that's already built in so that I can still have 2 quick ways of egress in the unwanted event of a fire. Just my 2 cents.
Awesome!! Thanks for following along. If you're on Instagram or Facebook feel free to shoot us a private message over there. We are emergencygetaway on both of those too.
This is great guys! Excited to see your journey! That's so nice how all the wiring was already there. My husband and I have played around for awhile doing a van build but we know nothing about electrical 😂
Electrical can sure be daunting but how exciting about your van! Also exciting, your soon to be new addition to the family. Hugs and God bless your new adventure. 💞
If you end up moving the fridge, maybe you could bolt the chair (with a seatbelt) there instead of getting rid of it. Also, a built-in kennel may be a good safety option for your dog.
There is another build where they use the area where your fridge is for a toilet and shower across from it which seems to work very well he also added a washer above the toilet. You could maybe add a hammock chair attached to the hand rail then remove that chair
Thanks! This was actually our old build. We now have a completely revamped build in the ambo and it looks completely different. We got that screen from home depot I beleive but there's other places online as well.
@pennsylvaniahillbilly3817 the wiring in our rig is completely different now. Our house electrical system is completely separate from the truck. I'd highly recommend joining some RV solar groups on Facebook. There is a ton of information there! Basic setup would be solar panel to charge controller to battery.
@@EmergencyGetawaygood to know. I haven’t bought an ambulance yet but I’m getting ideas and doing my homework before I get one. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
TO EMERGENCY GETAWAY: I enjoyed your tour. Nicely done. I have a few questions about the ambulance, that I did not see mentioned in this video. 1. What year is the ambulance? 2. What kind of engine (model)? 3. What fuel mileage does your ambulance get? 4. How much interior height is there inside the box? (I am 6' and concerned about interior height of some vehicles like short buses or school buses. I do not want to have to stoop inside, would like standing room after insulating too. 5. As you have a bed platform that does side-to-side, what is the width of the box at that area? Did it require you to remove a cabinet (the tall vertical cabinet appears gone) to put the bed that orientation?
1. 2003 2. 7.3L Powerstroke 3. 10mpg no matter what we do. haha. 4. We are at 6ft interior height. This was a big one for us when looking for an ambulance as we wanted to be able to standup fully. 5. We only removed 1 cabinet and our bed is 72" long. Which for us at 5'8" works perfect. If we would've removed the other cabinet too then we would have had room for a full size queen mattress and still about 10 inches extra to spare on the end.
Do a Google search for "retractable bug screen" and they're sold at home depot or the website directly. They come in different sizes and can be cut down to size needed.
I like how you are using the space (and opened up some of the space inside). I just watched another ambulance video, where the drivers side tall cabinet (just behind driver) was removed, to make it a shower/toilet stall (with outside door opening still possible). I think that is a very good use of that space too. Here is a link to that video you might find helpful. ua-cam.com/video/8cu5-OVmApM/v-deo.html
It's mind over matter, and (sorry) their deaths don't matter. (They do but where can you go that someone has not died?) With my health and having to give the ambulance drivers direction to the hospital I'm being transferred to while having heart attacks, I figure I am already loaded up for them to take me...lol.
@@stephenstrohacker7863 You've had more than 1 heart attack? Yikes. I've had 1 and had some stents put in but I took myself to the hospital. Who knows I might not have made it thank the good Lord I'm still kicking. Scary tho.
@@MissX905 Truthfully I'm not sure how many I had. It was all in one day over 14 hours or so. Neighbors literally drug me to the car for my family to take me to my hospital. I refused the ambulance to get me when they said they had to take me to the local hospital. My faith in that place is well, stop at the nearest veterinarian, at least they would have a legitimate excuse as to why I'm dead, they don't work on humans! My hospital watched me have a second (that I know of) attack in the ER. And sent me to the cardiac unit I had previous surgeries at. I got 2 doses of the liquid drano and 12 aspirin for the trip. At 11pm on friday before memorial day they called my cardiologist in for a stent in the right coronary. Same location as my dad and grandfather before me. Grandpa had 9 bypasses, dad had 3, I've only had the one blockage and the stent has corrected that, fortunately. Heck just realized that was just 10 years ago now when I was 44. Incidentally I've had every organ physically out of my torso with 46" of scarring from it all. And had at least one surgery on all parts of my body except left arm, lol. I'm kind of a medical miracle and figure if I can tell my story and one person is helped it was all worthwhile. As for the death thing, I can only face it head on. I've been "dead," on likely 6 occasions in 32 years, and ironically even worked in a cemetery burying people like my ancestors have done. Why should I fear it, only one person left this place alive!

The seat has to go! It takes too much room. Put those swivels in up front and work on outdoor space comfort seating.
We are really leaning this way. As we start with our kitchen and shower build I'm sure it will become even more evident that it needs to go.

When you removed the front cabinets behind the front seats was the cab opening that big already or did you open it up more?
It was already that big. Just removed the cabinets and were good to go.

@@EmergencyGetaway Thank you for your quick reply and answers. That is helpful.
Did you insulate at least the back walls of the ambulance?
We have not. Our ambo has done really well in hot and cold weather. The biggest thing for us currently is the lack of insulation on the floor.
Is that the 10 series (1") aluminum extrusion?
On the roof or the bed??
