    I had the privilege of meeting "Mr X" as we were both appearing in opera at Chelmsford. He was a kindly, genial man, very good company and knowledgeable about wrestling, said that he would fancy a chance in the big time. And then providence answered his call, although I don't think that this was the sort of bout he had in mind...

      I never knew his name. Your best bet might be to contact "Wrestling Furnace" His wrestling ambition, so he said, was to take on Alan Dennison as he didn't think he was strong enough to beat him-which struck me as peculiar as Mr X was much heavier than the Bradford strongman and immensely powerful himself. He would have been best suited to John Elijah, a real titanic heavyweight contest. .

    This is all we had on Saturday tv, BBC 1 and 2, and ITV in the 70s. But loved it, its when all the family sat in front of the

      That appalling mc crabtree helped turn the whole thing into a circus. His diction was dreadful. What a clown: better suited to Gerry Cottle's circus

    It's a shame that this is what many people remember from the British wrestling ....big daddy ruined it ..... please remember the more skilful wrestlers like Johnny Saint , Tony St Clair, Marc Rocco, and Marty Jones just to name a few.... not this shit.

      Yeah - Big Daddy started off as a heel with Haystacks...I've found a couple of their matches here on UA-cam...Crabtree was quite good at raising heat from the crowd...

    Everyone here seems to be saying Big Daddy & the Crabtree's ruined wrestling and were talentless etc, yet who else has made such an impact in British wrestling? People had a hero to look up to in Big Daddy, what's more important than that?

      He appealed to the family audiences but he alienated the adult wrestling fans, plus enough fellow wrestlers, that Brian Dixon was able to build All Star into a red-hot rival promotion so strong that it took over UK wrestling in the end.

      Why attack them brian &big daddy shirly crabtree.did nothing wrong and especially bringing youngsters through the ranks and many others that i watched with my father when growing up theree are too many to name but there are those which i watched in central hall coupled with maidstone market and the fights were fantastic fit finally against kung fu a shame when it finshed another john quinn v wayne bridges seeing it live was good as kent walton would confirm old fav les kellet very tough as they all was the .royals bert and vic faulkner i always feel that between them and the yanks would be good .young johnerthon british bulldog and dynermite kid im sure others can be named they have a get together with mick mac . Who normally runs it but was ill in the one i saw. Regards

    Big Daddy Crabtree was a real life bruiser. Old fashioned bodybuilder and Frontline infantry training, with natural strengh. Would wipe the floor with any modern day wrestlers today.
    The guy could just pick up a 300 pound guy on his shoulder like he was a box of A4 paper.

    Can anyone confirm? Wolverhampton Civic circa 79? Knockout tag tournament. Quick early tag against Stax ( Stax was off to Europe for a run) then lastly against Mr X and the Bulk both masked. At the end something unusual happened. Daddy delivered his finisher on Mr X but he got up from it and daddy delivered it again and X got up again. Daddy’s partner then drop kicked X and got the fall. Anybody?

    My Dad was a good friend of Martin Ruane, Giant Haystacks and he told me how Big Daddy was a horrible, vile, money grabbing man, behind the scenes. Martin of course was a lovely man in reality but the Crabtrees scripted all the fights, made everything go their way coz they knew that it was obviously more lucrative for them to play the good guy.
