I had the privilege of meeting "Mr X" as we were both appearing in opera at Chelmsford. He was a kindly, genial man, very good company and knowledgeable about wrestling, said that he would fancy a chance in the big time. And then providence answered his call, although I don't think that this was the sort of bout he had in mind...
I never knew his name. Your best bet might be to contact "Wrestling Furnace" His wrestling ambition, so he said, was to take on Alan Dennison as he didn't think he was strong enough to beat him-which struck me as peculiar as Mr X was much heavier than the Bradford strongman and immensely powerful himself. He would have been best suited to John Elijah, a real titanic heavyweight contest. .

It's a shame that this is what many people remember from the British wrestling ....big daddy ruined it ..... please remember the more skilful wrestlers like Johnny Saint , Tony St Clair, Marc Rocco, and Marty Jones just to name a few.... not this shit.
@tuberesu New Japan is the nearest to the skill level of the old masters of wrestling, indeed Mark Rocco wrestled as black tiger for years in Japan and was Tiger Masks top opponent
kamala would wreck him.. much more agile and faster.. although bd did have some good slam moves here.. but couldn't see him body slamming kamala at all.
34 years ago today (2013/12/22). You always knew that if ever there was a bully, Daddy would sort them out. If ere a brute were disguised, Daddy would unmask them.
Yeah - Big Daddy started off as a heel with Haystacks...I've found a couple of their matches here on UA-cam...Crabtree was quite good at raising heat from the crowd...
"Mr. X, no longer the mystery man" says Kent Walton. Um, so I was supposed to have suspended disbelief to the point of ignoring all those tattoos up and down his arms and how they could very well provide clues to his identity?
Everyone here seems to be saying Big Daddy & the Crabtree's ruined wrestling and were talentless etc, yet who else has made such an impact in British wrestling? People had a hero to look up to in Big Daddy, what's more important than that?
He appealed to the family audiences but he alienated the adult wrestling fans, plus enough fellow wrestlers, that Brian Dixon was able to build All Star into a red-hot rival promotion so strong that it took over UK wrestling in the end.

I hear mister x made a fortune selling ice to intuits and sand to Arabs after this match. British wresting was soooo bad and heels literally carried the whole shit show.
Big Daddy Crabtree was a real life bruiser. Old fashioned bodybuilder and Frontline infantry training, with natural strengh. Would wipe the floor with any modern day wrestlers today. The guy could just pick up a 300 pound guy on his shoulder like he was a box of A4 paper.
Can anyone confirm? Wolverhampton Civic circa 79? Knockout tag tournament. Quick early tag against Stax ( Stax was off to Europe for a run) then lastly against Mr X and the Bulk both masked. At the end something unusual happened. Daddy delivered his finisher on Mr X but he got up from it and daddy delivered it again and X got up again. Daddy’s partner then drop kicked X and got the fall. Anybody?
I'm betting Incredible Bulk got his nickname because he was so green in the ring. Never seen a wrestler look so uncomfortable just standing after barely being able to get in the ring.
My Dad was a good friend of Martin Ruane, Giant Haystacks and he told me how Big Daddy was a horrible, vile, money grabbing man, behind the scenes. Martin of course was a lovely man in reality but the Crabtrees scripted all the fights, made everything go their way coz they knew that it was obviously more lucrative for them to play the good guy.
The good old days when morbid obesity was considered the peak of athletic ability!
The old wrestling brings a smile back to my face happy times 😊
I remember this day like it was yesterday. Merthyr should never have lost that game.
Merthyr stinks. Go Rangers!

This is all we had on Saturday tv, BBC 1 and 2, and ITV in the 70s. But loved it, its when all the family sat in front of the
B/W tv set together

Big Big Daddy.
He never gave the other guy any high spots or took any bumps really. I think every match he did was like that.
Good for him, fuck taking bumps if your that size.
They called it a heavy weight match if it had big daddy it couldn't be anything else

Perfectly correct.
Brian Dixon and Kendo Nagasaki rescued it near the end tho. tHat's why we've still got an All Star 32 years later.
I almost detected one or two wrestling moves in that contest. A bit like trying to fight with a bus, kinda no contest really.

Big Daddy was always pulling peoples' masks off! It stemmed from this incident:

Collectively getting on towards 1000lbs if The Bulk is around 590lbs. BD looks near 400lbs here, about as big as he ever got.
Big Daddy must have been 500.

Johnny Saint is one heck of a grappler, and it's commendable that he is now a GM of WWE's NXT UK Contigent ...
Big Daddy is the best.
I can't believe Rollerball Rocco passed , tremendously talented wrestler , catch as catch and understood the mechanics of being a true heel...
I was 8 years old and it was the lead up to Xmas and Dundee Utd beat Dundee that afternoon...great times!
Morton scored v Celtic a far bigger shock than the result of this match up.
Aside from Quinny , did anyone last as long in the ring with B D as Mister X ?
I would have liked to see a Big Daddy-Kamala match
