Led Zeppelin Live "No Quarter" - LZ'73 Pedal Guitar Demo
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2024
- The LZ'73 was created to capture the live sounds of Jimmy Page during his days with Led Zeppelin, particularly 1973. To achieve this, I assembled three separate effects and put them together in one enclosure. I started with a Marshall amp style circuit that nails the Classic Rock Plexi tones - next, is a delay circuit that delivers classic tape echo tone (for the slapback effect that Jimmy loves). Last in the signal chain, we have the Echoplex preamp circuit, which colors the sound in a way that is very pleasing to the ear.
Disclaimer:
No amps were harmed in the making of this video.
Signal chain = Guitar into LZ'73 into a cabinet simulator into Tascam 6 track recorder
Excellent job Frank.
I hope this is what you do for a living, because....you're pretty good at it! Perfection! Tone, style, delivery, nuances....got it all down.
Ace playing and that tone.. greatest solo of all time , Jimmy at his sublime peak with this solo
Thanks!
OMG ... You captured Page's soul in this one. He was almost possessed while playing this solo and i can only begin to imagine the effort you put in learning this cosmic guitar solo.
Discovered this probably two years ago by now. STILL the Best Zep cover on UA-cam BY FAR! Eye Thank Yew!!!!!!!!
I did once ask Jimmy Page about that solo. I thought he was repeating what he transcribed, but he said no. He said he was totally improvising. It's tough enough to repeat, but can you imagine what it's like to have the skill to just randomly make up a solo like that? Nice job!
Thats right what he says.. The Solo on the 29th July73 was different to this (28th)I have heard quite a few versions from this tour and every solo was different, as was the "Stairway Solo" The best version of the Stairway Solo (imo) was 27th July which was chosen for the film/album .
@@bryanwilliams3665 Page also told me that I was pretty good and would probably make it, but I took a bunch of stuff that caused me to have a stroke, and it never happened for me after that. It took me many years just to get to where I could play the guitar again. I actually had to employ a different picking strategy too.
@@guitarttimman I was in a LZ tribute band..See my commentary here if you have interest is duplicating his guitar tone from TSRTS. (1973)
Right on Tim! The fact that this guitar solo (and many more) flowed out of Jimmy, is indeed much, much greater than me being able to repeat it! Thanks for leaving your comments!
@@FrankPerri7 I guess the solo is " Semi Improvised "A lot of the same 'Master Licks " were used nightly but often at a different 'time point'.. For Instance the opening 10 secs ( triplet pattern etc) was the same most (every?) nights as were many other licks.. Stairway was the same.. Much of the same 'Magic' licks put in a different order.. But Yes, certainly the 28th, he pulled all the magic licks out, put them in a fantastic order, played them with just the "right amount of mess" to create fantastic texture...
Another thing with No Quarter..If it was played with the "Surigical Precision" of the finest metal players, it would sound much thinner, emptier, and lack texture.
That July 28 th solo is one of Jimmy’s greatest ever.
Great job working it this epic solo ! ✌️🎸
Thank you! Yes, this is one of Jimmy's finest moments!
I didn’t know indiana jones could play guitar so well?
That was spot on Indy!
That tone is the Holy Grail.
Have listened to this a zillion...yes a zillion times. This jam gets me every time. It really gets what Zeppelin is about. John Paul Jones, Bonham ,.... probably my favorite playing by Jimmy Page. To see someone just nail it......well damn sir very proud of you. Oh the pedal is super too.
I know exactly what you mean, Turkee G! I've listened to this song countless times, and also consider this to be one of Jimmy's finest moments - and my favorite tone of his to boot! Thanks for letting me know that I've offered the proper tribute to one of my heroes!
Perfect note for note Bro!! Wow that solo is so Nice!!
I remember being 13 watching Jimmy playing the opening riff to that through all of the smoke thinking that was the coolest thing ever, didn't know what a wah wah pedal was yet. Great job.
You and me both! I paid to see their movie in the theater, at least 25 times - then, a glorious thing happened called VCR LOL!
Amazingly authentic tone and playing!
When I tell people about me meeting Jimmy in the 70's, they kind of just look at me in disbelief. But, listen to this one. I was dating a girl Tina Ross and she was 7 months pregnant with my son. We went to the Whiting, Indiana Theater where Steppenwolf was performing. Right when I walked in with Tina, John Kay walked right up to me, extended his hand, and he said, "wow man! I haven't seen you in a hell of a long time. How've you been?" Tina's mouth dropped up and she started point towards him while stuttering, "you you you know him?" LOL. That was funny. Yeah. I met John at one of his shows in the 70's too. It was coincidence because we ended up at the same party. I was dating a chick came from a rich family and we went to a party together. John was there too! I also met Ozzy Osbourne. The 70's was a blast man. Page was a phenomenal guitarist and even better than what people realized. He could play straight up jazz standards, but he only did it every great once in a while when he was goofing off. Unlike Ted Nugent, who I thought was great but an absolute weirdo, Page was a hippie guy. He really was!
wow you nailed the tone and the solo!! The pedal sounds amazing, brilliant idea.
Really nice. I watched Song Remains the Same for the billionth time just last weekend.
Nice!!!
Love that solo!

Bloody amazing my friend since I was 12 years old this has been my alltime favorite piece of music and you nailed it so hard. Man kudos to you. Such tone. Sell me a pedal.
Wow that’s awesome
The best three minutes of music ever recorded
Damn dude!!!! Fantastic playing and tone.
Best solo ever
This particular version of this particular song is my favourite thing Zeppelin ever did. It's phenomenal. I love Jimmy as much as anyone else, but I'm permanently annoyed at him for editing the life out of No Quarter on the movie version. Anyway you fckng killed it. Well done man 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Or how about the over 100 edits during Dazed? Jimmy blends all 3 shows into one awesome version! I myself don't think he needed to do that.
I’m on my third reply now
I would like to be walking by this house and hearing such strange and beautiful sounds coming from inside!
GREAT JOB. My favorite guitar solo of all time.
Thanks a lot!
Brings a tear to my eye.
Awesome
pretty much perfect and you look like you are playing it so easyily
Oh my god, that was amazing Frank!
Thank you!
Had To Come Back......Awesome.
Welcome back!
Yes awesome solo good job sir page's best no quarter solo truly amazing no one tops it
Thanks a lot!
This is fantastic man. Soulful, tasteful playing and spot on tone. Well done!
Thank you Bob!
Hey, thats so nice. Well done man! You made me want to try too now.
Even nailed the rushed tremlo/finger vibrato that Page does.
Well done Bruv
Outstanding!
Subscribed! I could listen to that jam for hours.
Excellent playing. And that tone is awesome.
Thank you, Steve!
Great work! My favorite solo of all time!
Thank you, Nicholas!
Well done
Really good! Thank you for posting!
You're welcome, Marcos - thanks for watching, and leaving a comment!
That is so fucking good, I might start crying
Kudos! Nailed it
beautifully done young man
Thanks Faccia!
I just got my hand on production model #2. I’m beyond impressed with it.
Clean and on point!!!!! Great job brother
Appreciate it!!
Sick tone!!! You got it more or less nailed at bedroom level. The only difference between this and his live tone is the natural echo inside Madison square garden.
Thanks for viewing and leaving a comment - I appreciate it!
That was so fuckin good. Thanx
Superb
Thank you!
I am a huge Zep fan since the early seventies and of all the solos Jimmy Page did the SRTS No Quarter one is one of my favourites along with Tea for one. Jimmy Page is the reason I picked up the guitar first day. Fabulous tone and solo Frank, cheers from Ireland.
You nailed it
Thank you, Frank!
Wow that's so good
Thank you, Kevin
FANTASTIC!!! thanks ! i can learn from this now
You are welcome! Glad it was helpful.
very intresting
Solid shit brotha!
Excellent!!! You nail it!!
Thanks!
Crazy good 👍
Thank you, Mr Ciccoritti!
amazing tone.
Thanks for letting me know - I appreciate it!
THIS IS INSANE
Great Tone!
Put me down for one when you get your shop setup
Thanks - will do!
@@FrankPerri7 hello. is that digital or analog pedal? it goes as a preamp or i can run it into an amp?
@@matvey4ikv It is an analog pedal that you can you can plug into an amp.
@@FrankPerri7 Hey Frank - Fantastic playing! What amp did you plug your pedal into when you recorded this video?
@@greentea9335 Hey, thanks! I didn't use use any amps - this is the sound of my guitar into the pedal - then into a cabinet simulator - then into my Tascam recorder.
Looks just like my first guitar, dont remember the brand, but it was 1976….Great video , Great playing, Great Taste. Now I have to watch it again ! Amazing tone. So I can sell all my shit ?
Fantastic, great job !
Thank you!
Indiana jones playing a Les Paul?? Now I’ve seen everything!!
Great job.
Thanks George!
@@FrankPerri7 You're welcome. Really... fantastic job. You had great feel on that one.
wow !!
Great 👍
Thanks Peter!
👏👏👏 you play guitar good just like my man.
Thanks Sweet Blossom!
Bravo
Thank you
My man sounds great spot on I want one!!!!
The Pharoah of Fuzz!
Cool.😎
Is your neck pickup overwound? It's very bright like Page's. Sounds just like his, honestly.
In these videos, what is the signal chain after that pedal? Details?...Please share! Sounds great and great playing, too!
Thanks Doug! Signal chain = Guitar into LZ'73 into a cabinet simulator into Tascam 6 track recorder.
@@FrankPerri7 thank you! Would you mind sharing details on the cab sim? Also, just watched Over the Hills and Far Away HTWWW...Very nice! Are the circuits in your pedals original design? If so, I'd be interested in purchasing...How can I do that? If not original and not for purchase, will you share details on the harvested circuits in your pedals? Also, what pick ups are in your Les Paul? I'm very interested in duplicating these tones, as you can tell...And I think you've done an excellent job. Thanks, Frank!
Great. Do you still produce these pedals?
lovely sound, cool pedal, it sounds like gain with a bit reverb.
Great Playing!! Whole Lotta Work put in there... That pedal nails Pages Marshall Plexi with KT88 Tubes.. I've Cloned Jimmys 1959 Guitar Tone at MSG :: Tor enthusists the recipe For the Les Paul :::: It is CRITICAL to have an UNMATCHED set of unpotted pickups . ie a Weaker Bridge than Neck This gives the guitar a distinctive "CHIRP" sound in the Middle Position . Bridge PUP is a Gibson T Top (or Replica ) at 7.5k ohms. They use a Short A5 Roughcast Magnet : Neck is slightly overwound PAF at around 8.6k. The Magnet is debatable here as albeit A5 was more common with White Bobbin PAFs, there is much sonic evidence for it being an A2.. It is somewhat misleading that manufacturers market Jimmy Page pickup sets as being "The Led Zeppelin Sound" ( Duncan WLH being one) They are all Speced as Pages tone 'Post ' Zeppelin and are period incorrect if trying to achieve the 1973 tone. Pages #1 Les Paul was unusually Acoustically Bright too, so finding a bright one helps too.
Thanks for the compliment, Bryan - and for the Les Paul recipe!
@@FrankPerri7 Thanks Frank for the Guitar lesson too!!..My solo is a bit rough around the edges compared with yours but I'll get there.. People don't realise, it's the 'grace notes' , quarter tones, pick noise artifacts that are difficult to replicate. These cannot really be noted in TAB..It's all very well the ' Metal Heads' going " pfff.. it's only pentatonics ! " They have no idea...I'm finding this harder to play than Malmsteen or Van Halen.. Well done again Frank, and how about Stairway to Heaven?.
Music is my Drug, ..and Jimmy is my Dealer!
Hi Frank, Could you tell me about the pedal you are using and what its plugged into? Thank you
you did a great job on this solo. the 73 seems to be a fan favorite even though i prefer the 07' version best.
Thanks!
What's the 07 version ? I see people talking about different versions of it.. are they all here on UA-cam ? How do I watch them ?

Where do i apply to purchase one of this amazing Pedals. Perfectly played.
Thanks Patrick - sorry, but I don't have any for sale - and I don't have plans to build any at this time.
@@FrankPerri7 thats a shame
Do you have the tabs for this? It sounds so good!!!
OOOOUUUUIE THAT’S ONE DAMN GOOD SOUNDING RIG my man!!!! How do I get my hands on not only that pedal BUT that hat too?!?!?! But seriously, yeah great tone no doubt... pedal for sale??
Hey Dwaine, thanks for stopping by and leaving a favorable comment! I'm in the process of getting my work station up and running after a recent move - I hope to be building them real soon!
Frank Perri ok ok enough chit chat get to soldering my man!!! Good stuff buddy can’t wait!
Dude, you rock.
Where did you got that backingtrack.
Thank you! For the backing track, I ran the audio from the original CD (with the complete guitar solo) thru the program Riffstation and removed as much of the guitar as I could. There's usually some remnants of whatever you're trying to remove, but it's a great tool for what it does.
Noice!
Thanks!
What a great job the tone is great and the playing as well. Surprised no one has asked if you can make them a pedal, so can you make me a pedal?
Thank you Richard! I'm hoping to have my work station set up (I've moved twice in the last half year!) real soon - then I can start building pedals again!
Here's what the new builds look and sound like:

Frank, is this a pedal you would sell or do you make these?- thank you* great job!
Thanks Jamie - sorry, but I don't have any for sale - nor do I make them at this time.
Is this pedal for sale? And if so where can I buy it? Sounds great.
Are those boxes for sale?
Amazing playing!! ...my fave page moment indeed.
Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't have any for sale, and I'm not making them at this time - sorry.
@@FrankPerri7 do you know when you’ll be back to making them??
@@FrankPerri7 you oughto make more as judging by the comments there is definatly a big demand - I;d deffo buy one
Can anyone tell where his knobs are set? The reflection on the knobs is harsh.
Does anyone know where I can get this pedal?
You Have Great Taste And Understanding ..........The Execution Is Flowing Like A Windy Day Into The Night..........Knowledge Hath The Power..........Reaping The Rewards....Keep On Reaping Man.........Your Feelings Are Blowing Through The Air Waves.....And You're Feeling On Top Of The World..Sublime Playing Of Jimmy Page's Composition Of ''No Quarter''....Great Song To Improvise To......But You Got Closer Than Most........That Tone!!!!!
Thank you Alan! I've been chasing that tone since 1976, when I first heard it!
To Find Jimmy Page's Tone Is One Thing .... Understanding Page's Playing Is Evident Here.............The Tone Is The Icing...... Royal Icing......More Important Is The Way You Actually Played It ......Ok....You Nailed The Tone Aswell....All On Your Feet ....Proper Guitarist.
What pedal are you using there?
Damn
And when can we purchase this pedal?
We love this solo big time...now... dump that pedal, get a JMP Plexi, set it up like Pagey, and record this solo without Zeppelin backup... backing tracks or do them yourself... then you will be in the essence of it....just my opinion. Great playing and great solo choice regardless...
Love it is it in D minor.?
The saddest key... (Spinal tap)
Thanks, and yes!
Where can I buy one
Sorry, but I'm not building them at this time.
With this look, he can play on the Lynyrd Skynyrd!
I wish I was your next door neighbor 😊
Thanks John, LOL! Funny thing is, one of my best friends became so after he watched my first video (many years ago) demonstrating my pedal. He told me, "If you look out your front window and see a tent pitched there, don't be alarmed - it'll only be me!" LOL! So, if you're ever in the Albany NY area, give me a shout!
Does your guitar pedal sound better than RAH? or is it just your guitar amp and playing, that makes it sound that way? Cause if it's the pedal, come on man, start making them for us ? lol
My pedal (based on a Marshall) sounds different than the RAH (based on a Hiwatt), so it depends what sound you're looking for - but my pedal also has a delay and Echoplex preamp which the RAH does not. Also, I don't use any amps for my video recordings - it's the pedal into a cabinet simulator into a Tascam recorder.
@@FrankPerri7 And man you Fucking NAILED that Echoplex tone nevermind the flawless playing!!!!
What is the backing track
It's from the movie soundtrack "The Song Remains The Same".
I’m impressed. You realize not even Jimmy Page plays that same solo better than you just did, right?
You sir are no Jimmy Page. ;-)
Thanks for the wink!
Think u missed a couple of notes, lol
