Its a proper bearing removal tool. I got a kit off ebay which has loads of different sizes in but probably will never use most of them. That was the first time I used it too so was simple to use. Removes the bearings straight so no chance of damaging the hub

these jobs look easy when you have the right tool :) never had to change a wheel bearing yet, but I might one of these days lol
The bearings came out easy with that tool. Thats the first time id used it too. Now you know what size to use too you can just carry those bits with you when you go away incase your bearings ever collapse. You can use a socket instead instead of the bearing driver. I just like tools :-)

Nice video tutorial but just a question; should you place the wheel.on your brake discs or the rubber of the wheel? Can you bed, damage, or warp the brake discs doing it this way?
They’re flat on the floor so shouldn’t be too bad for it. I put it on a couple blocks of wood under the hub now
Looks almost exactly like the procedure for my DR650, so super helpful video. I hadn't seen that removal tool before, so I'll have to snag one of those. Also, I really liked that bearing driver tool you used. Seems a bit safer than some videos I've seen where they beat on their bearings with a hammer and punch.
I noticed you didn't use any waterproof grease when installing the new bearings. Was that because they're already a sealed unit, or just preference?
+dustysquito the bearings are sealed. I did put a bit of sticky spray lube on the hub before knocking the bearing in. Removal tool was just off eBay. Hasn't let me down yet but does sometimes take a bit of hammering the tool in to make it tight enough to get the bearing out.

I think you may have put your seals in backwards. My rear wheel seals on my brand new DRZ400SM have the spring to the outside.
No, those seals definitely go that way. They would fill up with dirt otherwise.
Where did you get the drift/bearing removing kit? I was going to purchase one a while back but it was a fortune.
Got it on ebay. Don't think it was that much, in the middle of doing a video about it now. You can get all the parts seperate too, theres some in the kit that will never get used
Actually I looked since commenting, and saw they are much cheaper than they were a few years ago, they are a fraction of the cost, and more plentiful in options. Seemed like you could only by OE stuff before on ebay

what tool did you use to get the bearings out? is it just a plain socket from a socket wrench set? ive never seen this method.

They'll feel rough/knotchy when turning them with your fingers. Might also have some sideways movement in them if they're really bad
I question the direction you are facing the seals. The open side of a seal, with the spring, always faces what you are trying to contain. When you have open bearings that you hand-pack, like the front wheel bearings on a car, the seal is inserted the way you did it here. In this case, the bearings are sealed so there is no grease or oil to contain. The purpose of the seal here is to keep contaminants out so the seal open side/spring should face outward. That's the way they were on my bike when I just changed the bearings. I also just checked my service manual... if you look closely at the cross-section drawing of the rear axle/hub assembly, the open sides of the seals are shown facing outward and the spacer then slips into the lips.

Every DRZ400 I have seen has the rear wheel dust seals facing spring out from the factory. Michael gives a possible reason they are like that, but it doesn't explain why the front wheel seal is the other way! I reinstall them spring in, with lots of grease, keeps the spring from rusting if nothing else.
You are correct, if it is fitted the other way round it will just compress and distort the seal because there will be a void behind it. That is why all manuals and Suzuki diagrams show it fitted the opposite way to this video.

Hello, dear friend. I put one bearing completely inside the seat, but the original spacer is about 0.5 mm bigger and the second bearing does not fit completely inside the seat. Does this not cause a problem? If I hit the second bearing more, they become completely stiff and it is no longer possible to rotate the bearings with a finger. Thanks.
It should fit in as normal. Is it the right bearings?
@@MuddySump Hello. Thank you for your response. Yes, the size of the bearing is completely correct. Only 0.5 mm is the central spacer longer.
That outer bearing is 47mm?
Biggest socket i have is 32mm, with an OD of 42mm, do you think i would get away with using that or do i need to buy a kit?
the cheaper ones on ebay only go up to about 42mm from what ive seen too, dont really want to pay for the motion pro that i will only use a few times.
Tool needs to sit on the outside surface of the bearing. If you knock it in resting on the seal it will push the seal in onto the bearings
was that chain Loob you was using when you was putting them back in

Don't you worry about the opposite side of the wheel getting damaged when you are hammering down on it on a concrete floor?
Can put some wooden blocks under the hub if you wanted. There’s not much force going into the hub though cause the bearing is sliding in. I’d put something down if it was a nicer wheel. My drz wheels couldn’t get much worse 😄

I got videos about them both. The installer is made by motion pro, I bought it from adventure spec here in the uk. The remover is off eBay, search for bearing driver. You can get a kit like what I got or get the parts separate.

What was the spray you were using on the hub
Wurth HSS 2000. Just some lubricating spray I had. Can just use a little bit of grease too
Quick question maybe you know the answer.. So I also have two bearings sprocket side, however the outer large bearing is damaged, the inner race came loose. do you thinks still possible to knock them out using this tool to reach the innner smaller bearing to knockthem both out at the same time?

You can try it. Will have to get the punch part wedged in tight so the tool doesn’t keep sliding out of the bearing.
@@MuddySump thanks for the reply, and yeah worth a try, ill get the disc side of first and then worst case if it doesnt work ill just use an appropriate sized socket on an extension bar to beat them both out.

this tool damage de bearings? it´s possible to reuse them?
I’ve only knocked out bad bearings with them, they can take a bit of a hit to get some of them out, not sure how much damage it causes

should of had to bits of wood under there mate surprised ya never bent ya break disk and ya should of put ya bar through when ya do the first side keeps the other side level when ya put them in

To get the bearings out? If you haven't got a proper tool a drift/punch will do it. Knock it out evenly

the problem is if the bearings got destroyed and only the upper ring of them left stuck inside, that really sucks if it happens

Freezing the hub with dry ice contracts everything, sometimes that ring will just fall out. If not, hammer and punch...

Some grocers carry it but you have to ask, maybe ask around or google. The last time I tried was just with ice from the freezer, got that idea from a kid who said he puts his wheel in a deepfreezer overnight, but I don't have one and the store is over an hour away. Not sure if that worked though because the race cracked in half when I was chiseling and it came right out. They tend to be brittle. A note on the punch, it needs to be squared off instead of pointed. Ig you can't get purchase on the race you can dremel in notches. Alternate blows, 180* then 90* then 180 repeat.
