Wait a minute! From Virginia history, Jamestown was not only the first colonial Virginia settlement; it was also the first capital. About 1700, Jamestown as abandoned and the capital was moved to Williamsburg. Just before the beginning of the American Revolution, the capital moved to Richmond. It was at a Richmond church where Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Give m liberty or give me death" speech.
Richmond was also the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Love Richmond with all my heart. Any future visitors, stay away from Creighton, Fairfield, Whitcomb and Mosby. Those are the worst areas. Me being from around those areas as a child made me so grateful that im no longer over there
Thanks for the geographic tip! Anything we can do to help guide future visitors to Richmond is good thing!!!!
Me too. I went to college and live in Chester. Growing up in poverty does not break you. It pushes you to want a better life for your family.
me and my boyfriend are looking for apartments in richmond and this is such helpful info. thank you!
I'm just asking a question why because is low budget the cost of living is real low?
That’s where all the poor neighborhoods are. That’s why you are saying stay away.
To me Richmond art museum is one of the best on the east coast considering Richmond isn't a huge city.
arp thirteen I was amazed by how great it was when I went.
Richmond is very large. Have you been to the Southside? Northside? Westend?
@@GreenBanana675 I've been all over Richmond, but I've been to Frankfurt in Germany, New York, Miami, Las Vegas and other cities that makes Richmond Va look very small.
Metro Richmond 1.2 million compared to NY and Philly it’s small
I've live in Europe..Asia and been around the world and I will tell you that Richmond VA is one of the most beautiful cities that I have seen. It's like a giant museum.
Wow! Completely enjoyed your presentation style! Great job with this video guide!
I'm just looking where my Children and I can be happy and safe in local neighborhoods
😊
Nice!
I used to live in Richmond. I lived on VCUs campus and that’s one of the best areas to be in. The Fan is close by. James River. Shops, good food, cheap housing. I love it. The people are nice. Only con I’ve ran into while living there is that there is A LOT of homeless people (especially on broad street) that love to beg you for money and/or food. The vcu campus is the best not to mention one of the best schools in Virginia. The hospitals are level 1. There’s pros and cons everywhere but if you embrace the city, you’ll end up loving it
VCU is pretty bad, IMO.
Nice
Homeless people oh my God, they are in the metropolis too...NY. oh Orlando, Florida to
Meade Music why do you say that? I just graduated from high school and I’m going there
Hi, trying to move from Denver. How bad are the homeless? Here, it is becoming tent city/skid row. Many instances have been recorded of homeless opening smashing car windows if you don’t tip them and the city having to ramp up biohazard clean up for the feces and urine they leave behind. Are they concentrated on a specific part of town? Or is it like denver where they are everywhere-including as you drive in the highway along the highway in fields of clandestine small tent cities-. Thank you so much! We think Virginia might be our next move. Please educate us!
My favorite city. Love the trails, Maymont, the gardens and the wonderful views over the James River. So many things to do too. Great place for the active I must add.
Hi, is is known for snow shooing or mountain biking? or more for running and other activities? how is the fishing scene and how close are you to the mountains and the beach. Thank you!
@@AlexZ-lc6nl I don't live there, I live a little ways south. I know it's very good for mountain biking and running, great urban trail system. I believe people fish out around Belle Isle but not completely sure, I don't fish. Proper mountains are a hour and a half to two hours away, beach is maybe a hour?
there are so many awesome hidden spots. I'm a teenager whos lived here all my life and yet me and my friends can still go out and explore the city for a day and find new things
What a positive outlook! Well said!
We love our city! This was awesome Erik!
Cool video. The James River Parks System is the best part, you should have touched on it!
I know everything cannot fit into a short video about a great city but I advise anyone to skip Quirk and go to Maymont. I would even rather sleep there than to pay for Quirk.
Umm ok
Incredibly well produced
I visited Richmond recently and to my surprise is a really beautiful city very well maintained and with a lot to enjoy. I'm planning to go back soon and stay longer so I can get to know better this Virginian Jewel.
Luis; It's a slum now.
@@bessied.5694 I went there in April this year and I really liked it. It's very clean, well maintained, and very elegant. It might have some not so good areas but it definitely has the metropolitan look of an east coast city.
@@Luis-yx1xi ; That was before the riots.
Hi! What did you like about it. What did you hate about it. And I hear the homeless are bad and traffic is bad. But I wonder what that entails. Is it competitive to LA traffic or Denver traffic? And Homeless wise…is it similar to skid row homeless or tent city denver/San Fran?
I live outside of Richmond and i would advise you to go to the hard shell seafood restaurant and if you like sushi, akida or sticky rice
I love Richmond.
My hometown, my REAL home, I remember it all, living right by carrytown and VMFA, my friends and I would walk all the way down to carry town and ball out, the we would go to VMFA, then to the park, then to downtown, I remember it all, looking back at anything has never been so depressing, now I'm in Broward County in FL
Which one is better florida or Virginia?
Im a Richmond native. My family we left Richmond in the 2001 moved to DC then I moved to Nashville in my 20s and now I'm live in Denver Colorado. My mom moved back to Richmond in 2015 it's way different now although I will probably never move back I like bigger more urban cities
@@alexanderwhiteman5778 Richmond is not a Northern city. My family had been here 200 years , all very Southern. We are very Southern and even DC feels too Yankee for us. Richmond is like Columbia SC or Charleston. People just don't understand Richmond or only compare it to New York for some reason.
Man you're awesome, great video! I just recently 'discovered' Richmond is such an awesome place!
Thanks for your comment! Glad you enjoyed Richmond. Like so many US cities it has way more to offer than people think. Little Rock, Arkansas was another city that surprised me. It had so much we made two videos. Check them out if you get the chance! ua-cam.com/video/VCd0Er2GTac/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/_wE2lrZKOwA/v-deo.html
@@Erikthetravelguy Will do, I haven't been to Little Rock, I'll have to go!
@@Erikthetravelguy Richmond has more in common with Little Rock than NYC or Philadelphia. Its a very Southern place !
The production on this video seems like it should be on the Travel Channel! Well done!
Now i know what is the reason my family named me Richmond.
for all the haters...everywhere has bad and good areas. if you let the bad overshadow the good in life. then all you'll ever see is the four walls inside your on backyard, but if that's what makes you happy, then so be it. to those that want more in life...I say here...here!
Well said! This good/bad neighborhood comes up in just about every place we visit!
Mannn, your mom is Gorgeous : ) !!! Hi Eric's Mom ;-)
I like the way you present your videos, Sir, very relaxing and you have a great sense of humour. Cheers!
johnybrokeit thanks! We had fun on that shoot!
Richmond city is my town l love it.
If you love a great historic city with something cool on just about every corner, Richmond is your city.
good presentation.
Eric, I came to learn more about Richmond but got subscribed to your channel instead. I love your humor!
Born in Richmond raised there its the best place I have ever been because I'm used to it I've gone to Maryland but not stay there for a couple of days but I did stay a couple of days in North Carolina
Nice!

The Art Museum is open 365 days? I'm just lost that they're open on holidays. ..no off days?
Awesome video!
Thank you Brian!

Stay out of Northside, anywhere ending in “court”, East End and Jeff Davis/Oak Grove
Southside too
Period!😂

Home of the legendary GWAR!
Preciosa la antigua capital confederada.
I love it here but I must admit I haven't taken advantage of the breweries yet. I'm gonna have to change that.
+Randy Moore I say get on that (in moderation, of course). Cheers!!
Randy Moore Try Castleburg! A nice little brewery near Hardywood!
Don't leave your credit card at Triple Crossing! Their security sucks. Mine was given away to someone else by the bartender and used not only in the Brewery, but around town before I even closed my tab .. No apology from them either.
Hey that's my city
uh. prolly should mention that kings dominion is like right there also.
Agreed! So little time!
Richmond was always cool I miss the old gritty days a bit though seems a bit more hipster and pretentious these days. I no longer live there though so what do I know life took me out west to Denver Colorado and I have never looked back
We also loved Carytown and the Virginia Capital Trail. Here was our 7-minute summary of our month-long stay in Richmond. ua-cam.com/video/n3wDXRhUTfk/v-deo.html

It got cool while I wasn't looking? I live here and it still hasn't gotten any cooler.
JSIPE13, is "cool" in the eye of the beholder? Asking for a friend.
@@Erikthetravelguy Richmond is not a Northern city.
I’m thinking about moving here from the west coast. Can any of the locals give me an honest opinion of the place? Overall is there a lot of crime and is it rundown? Is there lots to do and places to eat? It looks affordable which is nice. In some ways it kind of seems to remind me of Portland, OR which is where I’m from so that’s cool.
In some areas it is run down with crime... But there are also a lot of nice areas too
Ayanna Horton do you ever feel like you are in danger there?
@@stevenf7795 one time I did go to an area that was not in the main city but on the outskirts and stopped at a gas station... The people were kind of rough around the edges but no one bothered me... Just act like you belong and know about the streets a little bit... like you know what's up.. Lol
Steven Harrison Used to be quite the hellhole but it's becoming a world city. It will probably become a major city in due time.
Honestly, Portland is a much better place in every possible way - except for the rain. Better food, nice people, and you can't even compare nature to what it's like here in RVA.
Lived here for 9 years. No newcomer can tell me it's shit 👌 nice vid
What about Richmond international raceway...
What are the people like? I’m from nyc I like real and direct lol
The people are nice. Like to have a good time. Drinking and art. Fashion. Some hipsters and vegans. It's a mixture of different cultures.

It’s funny how u don’t talk about the history of the confederacy
They were good
Grace Street
America's first permanent colony was St. Augustine, Fla.
that was spanish colony
Jamestown was the first colony by English.
St Augustine Florida was the first city in America
Yes, good ole RVA...nothing quite like those never-ending toll booths where you continually pay for roads strewn with potholes. Many people in this city are rude & snobby, and the crime rate is high. Even with all the revitalization, this city will always feel "tired & old". Richmond has all but lost most of her southern charm, so don't blame that on the past being the Capital of the Confederacy...blame it on the ever-encroaching DC influence with corrupt politics. So if you are ever feeling dismal & depressed in Richmond, do what many Virginians do - flee to the Outer Banks for a getaway. Thank goodness for North & South Carolina...you know...where all Virginians go for GOOD bbq & GOOD beaches.....
Lol @ DC influence. Baltimore is in the south! The entire state of Maryland is below the Mason dixon line. In fact harriet Tubman is from maryland and the underground railroad runs through maryland . Both VA and MD + DC still have some form of charm to it still when compared to NY NJ
@@krazyjnva2up2down55 it's fading and Virginia is becoming more progressive, (sadly) but same for NC. Virginia has been ruined.
North Carolina is not really southern either anymore. Also Virginia has tons of great BBQ. You don't know what you're talking about.
Hi richmond from srilanka im coming 🤗
Richmond, Virginia has always been an amazing, cool city I don't know where this guy has been. Your corny video inspired many trolls I can see to be hateful to the city.

City of richmond in 3 minutes. Go to a port a potty at a concert. City hall, look inside the toilet and take a deep breath.
Ha!
rich wut? RICHMOND
ahahh eric mention all of the shootings .. be honest ..
Every city has its good and bad, but without even a passing reference to Richmond's history this video seems like a whitewash and deliberately ignoring the past. It's about desperately trying to seem cool and hip. Erik mentioned the Virginia Capital trail but there's no mention of the Richmond Slave Trail or other parts of the city's history. Learn from history and don't ignore it in order to hopefully avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
Your commentary is very constructive. Thank you for that. We work very hard to explore “what’s good” and “what to do” when visiting a particular destination. There will always be subject that is simply to complex to articulate in a short form video. I believe the best way to root out evil is to put more good into the world. But again, thank you for the note and thank you for watching!
Barely showed any of the row housing that makes Richmond what it is.
Xavier Cobalt thank you for your commentary. You are correct featuring different housing options has little to do with travel and tourism. Perhaps in the future your commentary on row houses would be more appropriate on a real estate public forum.
BUT NO COLISEUM !!! That's why he didn't mention it come on Richmond ?
😃
Man great marketing video best bunch of lies I ever heard about Richmond lol
Centell McNeil now, now. This is my editorial opinion. We shot at every location and so I don’t think “lies” is appropriate. I believe we captured “ the soul” of Richmond in this video based on my personal experience.
Erik The Travel Guy as a native Richmonder we got alot to work on in this city I mean a whole lot. The one bright spot I can say is the crime rate has drop tremendously around here which is a huge plus
Centell McNeil agreed. Most places I visit (and make videos) need work. I like showing people how to visit therefore bringing tourism dollars to the town. Happy New Year and thank you for watching!
This is a hell hole for those caught in a part of the city where you cant escape the blight and crime. My neighborhood is a big trash pile with non English speaking inhabitants living in unauthorized hotels , drunk drivers taking down utility poles with freighting regularity and random gunfire frequently waking me and our dog . For fun young thugs throw tennis balls on our roof in the middle of the night. Who does that?
My best days is when i can see the city in my rear view mirror but then the depressing thought, I will have to return,
haahaha you were lucky you were not shot there. hahaa but great video none the less..
hahaha 1:16-1:22 hahahahah !
Lots of homeless people..School system is a joke..Begging bums on every corner.I move in February😘
Bounce Twice the begging bums part is so true. Can’t walk up Broad Street or any major street without some begging for something
