Dowel joints like that we’re only done for two years in the late 1800s if I remember correctly, that started off as an extremely rare piece I would’ve loved to of seen it restored to its former glory yes the chalk paint looks pretty, and I know much of it was missing but it still breaks my heart
@malelpn37 Although I appreciate your sentiments I encourage you to please do your research they aren’t actually as rare as you think. These joints were invented by Charles Knapp in 1867 who designed a machine that could mass produce furniture with this kind of joinery. It’s actually quite strong and though appealing today it was seen less desirable back then. They discontinued making furniture with these machine made joints because people preferred the nostalgia and hand made look of a traditional dovetail. They were produced for 30 years and within that time a large quantity of furniture had been made thanks to this mass production joinery. although not commonly seen they really aren’t rare. I am just happy to know this antique i found living outside in someone’s backyard will now have an opportunity to be showcased in someone’s home as a statement piece. thank you for watching.

At some point you need to stop putting me in utter shock with these transformations Melanie! I know that working with removing the lead paint sucked, but honestly the fact it lead to this transformation makes my heart happy. I love the little creatures all over it, the flowers and embelishments. Bright pops of color with contrasting black - beautiful! Sweet handplaner!!
@@coloredcaboosecreations It is funny. I was thinking this watching you shellac everything. I'm just happy mine wasn't lead paint. Also IDK if 'slapped' is what I would call delicately using a frosting piping bag to create depth and texture. 💚So good.

I have been binge-watching the 2022 challenge. While I have seen some nice work, nothing compares to yours. I believe you have perfectly met the heart of the competition. You took your time and let the creativity find you. Then continued creating to the end. I think you have won the challenge in my mind and I am sure, in many others.

I would dare say out of all the restoration, DIY channels I have watched throughout the years yours has to be one of the greatest. Am glad I follow and watch this channel. Standing, clapping, whistling!!! You took this challenge to the next level! So much better than the stencils so many other furniture artists use. BRAVO!!
Mel, this has to be the absolute best example of an ugly duckling turned into a beautiful swan! And your music choice was absolutely perfect. All of it together makes me want to watch it all over again! Brava!

Using the piping bags was genius. This piece is gorgeous and if I hadn't seen the before I would not have believed that not only did you salvage it but made it magnificent.
This is by far one other the coolest make overs I have ever seen. Talk about thinking outside the box. You smashed, glued it hammered it and made it not just a thing of beauty but true art. Bravo!
I ran a stripping workshop for many years and found that the secret to removing any paint finish is to apply the stripper liberally. Yes, it's expensive stuff but a liberal coat and giving it time to work before using a scraper gives top results. Try applying the stripper then covering with plastic sheeting for an hour or so. As you scrape the stuff off place the waste onto old newspapers and leave out side for the solvents to gas off. Try using a power washer when neutralizing it gives amazing results. And don't forget to wear the appropriate safety equipment. Hey, just my thoughts. Thanks for sharing yours with us.
Typically letting used rags soaked in stripper and stain fully dry out before disposing is something I normally do because they can combust if not. In this case being lead I really wanted it gone as soon as possible so I took it to the hazardous waste facility the next day. (wish I would have thought to film that) Love the idea of using a power washer I do have one. Thanks for the tips I appreciate them especially coming from someone with expertise in the area.
I would not have ever liked anything like this, colorful bright colors over dark, until you did it. Out of deference to your lovely art and talent, I had to watch. I loved it! Amazing, all the care you take. I know for those that love this type of colorful art will adore this piece. I hope you make more videos, soon.
"nice nails are overrated anyway”…😂😂😂 I couldn’t stop laughing to myself when I read that and was thinking the same thing as you were restoring this and thinking my nails with restoration. Such an amazing job you did with this !! Great example of ugly duckling to swan. Thank you for saving this piece and showing me(us) what can be done with determination, imagination and skill. Kudos to you and you deserve a wonderful manicure. 💅🏻😊
not one day did my manicure last ! 🤣 Oh well story of my life. So glad you enjoyed the process anything is possable if we are willing to try . thanks for watching
I think the same way. That nails are over rated lol. As soon as they grow past the skin i chop them off. Dang things are so hard they rip my skin or get caught on stuff and fold backwards. Not a nice feeling so off they go lol
WOW! This is such a huge transformation and so beautiful. You get my personal vote for winning this challenge. So original , you have a great eye for design.
Mel, this is so colorful and full of life, one of the most creative transformations I have seen in an ugly duckling challenge. I cannot stop smiling when I look at this amazing piece of art. Job well done!!!
I was so excited when I saw the knapp joints, knowing it was an old piece, I "almost" cheated and scrolled to the end of the video to see what you did with it. Glad I didn`t, otherwise I would have missed watching you transform this Ugly of all Ugly Ducklings into a beautiful, unique one of a kind swan. I am blown away by your artistic abilities. I just found your channel so it`s time for me to binge watch until I`m notified of the next one. 😊
Lol, I cheated and scrolled to the end, but going back to watch the in between... Being someone that has taken YEARS to get down the primitive, chippy look long before it was popular and everyone and their mother was doing it with the help of more products than I can ever afford, lol, I love the before but I know it's an acquired taste and can also appreciate a good make over especially when the original woodwork is kept intact or rebuild upon. I think it's funny that there are so many products to make a chippy look and then someone finds a piece that has it naturally lol! I've had to figure it out with basically paint. And then whatever else I can do to make it LOOK naturally old and chipped from years of being repainted and can do it for under $5 lol! Most times you don't need the extra $30 paint and $25 additive and another $30-40 wax or another $30 top coat! Us primitive lovers have been doing it for literally YEARS with less than $20 from start to finish. YT has made it so anyone with a decent audience can make a killing by using all these products that aren't even necessary. I've even bought into myself with the moulds and stamps etc... And even the transfers they're using now at $40 a pop plus shipping... When you can actually find tutorials on how to make Transfers yourself with not much more than a printer
First time viewer here. Out of the hundreds of furniture refinishing videos I've seen over the years, I've never seen anything quite like this! I can't think of a better way to totally transform a broken down piece of furniture than to give it a quirky, whimsical makeover! I absolutely love your inspiration, as I also love those embroidered Mexican tops. What a unique and fun piece that will add character and joy to any room. 💙💛💚🧡♥️💙💛💚🧡❤️
So amazing! Too beautiful!!! If someone isn’t confident in their artistic skill you can print pictures and decoupage them on, or print outlines and paint them in like a coloring book!! Such an inspiring video!!
A stunning transformation! What a happy piece of furniture! Glad I found your channel. Subscribed today. Thank you for being so very conscientious about the lead paint, that you contacted authorities to verify how to dispose of it without contaminating anything or anyone else. It's such a very toxic metal, that anyone dealing with it must have a conscience about testing, handling, protecting self and others, and disposal. Bravo to you for giving viewers and other refinishers a perfect example.
Melanie, this piece is stellar and beyond amazing! When I first saw it I thought "this is gonna be GOOD!" Then when you started talking about puffed flowers and critters, I thought "no way is this gonna work." But it DOES! You do great work girl. Keep it up. I'm watching out for your videos from here on. Blessings sweet girl!
As soon as you started free handing the flowers and animals my mouth dropped. As I continue to watch with it open unable to close it because of how brilliant the idea putting it in the frosting bags but also how amazing it looks!😍 I just wish I lived near you in order to purchase it. Thank you for an amazing video!
I guess I’m old fashioned. For a piece of this age (joinery says it all) I would have preferred a stained finish🤷🏻♀️, though your artwork is very nice. At least it was saved cause it was pretty darned ugly. 😂😂
Lol! I’m working on one almost exactly like this. Mine is a solid oak antique and the condition was almost as bad as yours. It’s a dry sink that was used in the late 1800’s to around the 1930’s. It’s gorgeous. Mine had about 12-15 layers of paint and varnish and god knows what else! Love yours.
I am 70 yrs old and I have my grandparents wedding gift, a washstand, that is almost exactly like this piece you are working on. It’s over 100 yrs old so I’m wondering if you are restoring an old piece like mine. If so, what a blessing for you to keep this antique alive! I’m excited to see the finished reveal. Thank you for sharing 👏🏻
I've never seen anything so beautiful. So talented and creative. I couldn't stop looking. You've given me ideas. You should be so proud of yourself. 🦢🦢
Melanie this is gorgeous! Wow, seriously, looking at this piece just makes me feel happy 😊 so clever to pipe the paint. One of a kind piece of true art 😍
Amazing! Beautiful!! I’m thinking you have perfectly met the heart of the competition. You took the ugly piece of furniture, then let your creativity flow from the beginning are to the end. This turned out magical piece. Also I follow you for a while , you give to me a lots of inspiration! Thank you so much for sharing your Amazing work!!❤️❤️
Thank you sweet lady I’m looking forward to seeing your video, I’m slowly working through them all everyone is so uber talented! Just happy to be a part of this amazing group.
Can I just say thank you to you for rebuilding that drawer in the same way the original builder had? I've never seen joinery like that, it was beautiful all by itself. As to the wash stand, I Loved it with it's original shabby, worn finish and likely would have clear coated it and left it the way it was BUT then you painted it with Such imagination and in such a unique way that I decided maybe I wouldn't have left it the way it was and instead set my imagination free the way you did. Excellent job on this! (Oh and I Loved the music!)
Krickette Im so happy you enjoyed the music. That’s what’s fun about these challenges we all get to see how everybody interprets their idea of a swan 🦢. Thank you so much for watching 🌺
This piece is the epitome of an ugly duckling. And with your amazing artistry, it turned out beautiful. I loved your storytelling during this video. I love learning how people get their inspiration.
Wow! You really knocked that ugly duckling straight into swansville! That's an incredible transformation! I've watched most of the playlist so far and I do like a lot of the other true ugly duckling makeovers (the ones that actually were ugly to begin with). But your piece ... OMG. It is sooooo far ahead of all the others. It is such a good ugly duckling into swan transformation that it should get a Hans Christian Andersen award! 😆 I really love it and I think you should win! I'm new to your channel so now I'm going to subscribe and go binge watch all your other videos! ❤️
Well thanks I'm blushing 😊 you are very kind. These challenges are a great opportunity to challenge myself. I am so proud of everyone that has joined in. We are all at different points in our journey and it takes a lot of work and courage to put yourself out there. thanks for watching
Same here. Just subbed today. This just showed up in my feed and within minutes, I was hooked. Anyone can refinish a piece but a true artist can and do make it their own. I would proudly display this piece anywhere in my home. I'm glad so many others agree with the way I feel.
Absofreakinloutely fantabulous! I must admit that I loved it in its “ugly” stage and would have likely cleaned and sealed it and kept it for myself, however, your amazing skill and artistry took this one over the top. I love that you matched the original joinery for the drawer repair and I admit that I plan to steal the doweled plank top idea for a piece I have awaiting her makeover. I am always inspired by your work and although I haven’t yet watched all the other transformations, I feel like you’ve got this one - hands-down! I don’t have “nice” nails either and if it weren’t for O’Keeffe’s Working Hands, I’d likely be able to sand my pieces without sandpaper at times... Skill such as yours is much more beautiful than fancy fingernails. Keep rockin’, girlie! 😊
So glad you liked it and by all means steal away. Better yet send me a photo on instagram or FB when finished id love to see it. Omg I almost choked on my beverage when I read about sandpaper hands can totally relate! 🤣
I. Am. Obsessed with your flip!! I've been on a furniture flipping kick and you popped up just now. Totally wasn't expecting a paint job inspired by Mexican embroidery. I'm literally sitting in a room surrounded by framed embroidery (some from Mexico) and you have just given me great new ideas for my furniture. To think... I was going to just be boring and subtle, painting or refinishing some of my tables/shelves. Thanks so much for this inspirational vid!! Can you be my new best friend??
Shocking to see before and after! Your creativity is amazing. Kudos for maintaining the view of the original joins. The cake decorating was genius. Cannot get enough of this. On the retail side of the coin, if you give away/sell this masterpiece, would you give a cautionary notice to the future owners with regards to the lead paint that still remains? Someone may accidentally damage it and expose the lead or heaven forbid strip/sand it.
Absolutely agree with you on when it leaves my home. It more than likely will be given to a family member but when that happens I will show this video and inform them of its past. thank you for watching glad you enjoyed ☺️
Melanie, you are insanely talented beyond words! This I asked to be one of the most beautiful creative inventive pieces I have ever seen!

Wow! You’re the winner in my book!
Power washing might be a good technique in general but I don’t think in this situation blasting off the residual lead paint is a good idea…
That plastic wrap seems to yield the best results, at least as far as I've seen on UA-cam videos!

Melanie this is gorgeous! Wow, seriously, looking at this piece just makes me feel happy 😊 so clever to pipe the paint. One of a kind piece of true art 😍
Thanks Jen 😊
The music is not necessary, if anything it's off putting.
@@joeschmo5181 I actually enjoyed it, as it goes with the theme of the piece.
It's so cheerful!! It would fit perfectly in my home. ♥️
Truly gorgeous. I love the folk art fun...and great music xxxxxxx
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing!
Omg! From trash to treasure. What a marvelous revival! How beautiful!
You did an absolutely fantastic job! It looks so beautiful!!!
You just created a great piece of folk art !
So beautiful! Reminds me of the embroidered cotton dresses I saw growing up in Texas.
Love that!
Winner!! IMHO, this is gorgeous. Wish I lived closer so I could buy it!
Breathtaking!
This piece is the epitome of an ugly duckling. And with your amazing artistry, it turned out beautiful.
I loved your storytelling during this video. I love learning how people get their inspiration.
Thank you so much 😊
I’m looking forward to seeing yours!
@@coloredcaboosecreations sadly i got sick this week, so i wasn't able to participate this time around :(
I could watch you paint these designs all day long. Phenomenal
Thanks Cory that means a lot 🥲.
@@coloredcaboosecreations you're very gracious. 💞
Wow absolutely gorgeous
Same here. Just subbed today. This just showed up in my feed and within minutes, I was hooked. Anyone can refinish a piece but a true artist can and do make it their own. I would proudly display this piece anywhere in my home. I'm glad so many others agree with the way I feel.
extraordinary you have such talent , a beautiful piece ,
Thank you for your support Christine
Exactly the best kind of piece to re work and make live again!
Thank you so much!
Wow, this piece is a winner regardless of the ugly duckling competition.
This piece was once very nice, look at those joints! It is great to it restored.
Wow what a beautiful job.
Thank you! 😊
Now thats a Award Winning design and execution! Outstanding!! ♥️
