Great point about emotions Kyle! To further the point, are my emotions based on reality or on perception? This can help leaders sift through fears they may have and clear their thinking, leading to a reality based approach to communication. One example may be: "if I present this change in process, the team is not going to like it and therefore, won't be engaged in the solution." Emotions in that statement can lead to a negative delivery of the concepts during communication with the team. Understanding what emotions you as a leader are having can lead to those emotions coming through when communicating.

Vince, I appreciate you recognizing the important role emotional intelligence has in proactive communication. When a leader is able to recognize the emotion(s) at play and be honest about the root cause(s) ahead of time, they are able to approach that communication with a more constructive mindset.
