    I made Hank Hill into the world of D&D as a warlock and he was possessed by Lady Propane. He always introduced himself "Hank Hill Assistant manager, Strickland Propane" and would yell "I'm gonna kick your ass" when he used hellish rebuke. when Burning hands or Eldrich blast was cast he would say "this time you taste the meat, and the heat"

    Hey XP to Level 3, could you pin this comment, I want to make a PSA for anyone who came into this video with the intention of starting a Warlock Character:
    I noticed a couple of comments of people who came into this hoping to learn how to play a Warlock but left essentially comments saying “well looks like they’re terrible and not fun to play.” Note this video is meant to be comedic and left out some the better of the features of the Warlock for comedic effect. Warlock’s are not nearly as bad as this video portrays, while Warlocks as a base class might not receive many bonuses and abilities, there are new features that added depending on your patron. Also while Warlock don’t have access many spell slots they regain those spell slots after a short rest as opposed to most spell casters which don’t regain their spell slots unless they take a long rest, in addition the Warlock’s primary damage method is the cantrip Eldritch Blast Which can fire up to four D10+ your charisma modifier attacks at multiple or a single target per turn. Also the Pact of the Chain provides with an invisible familiar and the Warlock has access to Eldritch Invocation which allows them to use jump, disguise self, and levitate spell an unlimited amount of times making them Ideal for infiltration. If you like your classes to have a large variety of versatile then the Warlock is probably not for you, but a properly specialized Warlock can be one of the most devastating members of your party.

In the rogues case his ability to have massive expertise and completly ignore crap roles makes for an ez thing to exaggerate on. Also rogue has tons of content for a non magic user where all of warlocks content is mostly invocations which are extremely specific so hard to male a joke about all of them

    The power to read

    • @stanard_bearer
      @stanard_bearer 6 років тому +11

      if you think about it, it says read all writing. what is writing? it is a mark left by something or some one. so if I see a trail of blood on the floor I can read that. or just the thoughts going through the head of the one dragging the body. if I find a book written by a drunk man (both these happened) I can read that. if I find footprints I CAN READ THAT.
      my D.M. didn't allow that last one.

    • @thebickerer6739
      @thebickerer6739 6 років тому +14

      Footprints and such do NOT count as writing. Writing is symbols INTENDED to communicate something. If a few drops of blood from someone's wound stain the floor, it can't be read, since it isn't writing. If someone, however, would walk in a certain manner to leave the pattern of their footprints as a message, then it could be read; same thing with blood.
      But, if it isn't intended to communicate, it isn't writing. I can write: ASEDLNAEasdlaidSADFLKNAWEROnp. Yes, you can read that, but it doesn't communicat anything apart from... being readable.

    • @stanard_bearer
      @stanard_bearer 6 років тому +4

      well I guess but under a different light, it's said that "a picture is worth a thousand words" -some random shmo who thought he was clever. A scene or other such stuff can convey specific messages all without having a single letter of actual language. (also we thought about it and eventually ruled it as this limited omniscient power that could rather than actually read what's written, he instead knew what was going through the mind of the person who left the markings.) we were in a setting that had only common (new D.M.) so this was his way of saying "hey man, there's no other language around so here's this power instead of real reading."
      sorry if that went on too long

      Sorry but that’s not how it works, reading any language is an eldritch invocation and essentially acts as bonuses and traits to strengthen your Warlock. The 20th level ability of the Warlock allows them to essentially refresh their spell slots once anytime between a long rest. The depiction of the Warlock in this video might make it seem trash but many of the class features come from the Eldritch Invocations and the Pact Boons Which weren’t overly explored in this video.

    A member of my party I was DMing purposely made the edgiest character he could with a warlock. After saving an orphan who had been haunted by her dead mother, our warlock thought it would be a great idea to reach out to Nalarthotep and get lil orphan Issy in on the fun of an eldritch pact. Walls melted into black ooze, teady bears crawled to the candle in the middle of the room until at last there was no light. When they awoke, every fire, alchemical, and other light source had gone out and there was chaos as the local wizard guild hunted for the eldritch breach. Easily the coolest class ever.

    While this was funny, warlocks aren't actually as bad as the video makes them seem. For one, you cast all your spells at your highest spell slot, so your average spell does more than a wizard of the same level. And Eldritch Blast and Hex are easily some of the best spells in the game, especially at first level. Dark One's blessing + the Lucky Feat, which amount to essentially 4 free rerolls per long rest, has easily saved my character dozens of times.
    That being said, I did like the video. It was pretty funny.

    • @doombybbr
      @doombybbr 6 років тому +11

      The spells are on short rest, I compared the warlock spell slots to other classes, At highest level (if you assume no short rest) other classes have fewer 5th level than Warlock, but have 2 of 6th and 7th. Most of the time you wouldn't use the spells of 4th or below so I ignored that. This means that warlock is just barely behind the other classes before the short rest, if you ignore the bullshit that is eldritch blast or eldrich invocations that is.

    • @TheDarkDragonStudios
      @TheDarkDragonStudios 6 років тому +19

      doombybbr
      That's the other thing, you get less spells, but you get to cast more often in the long-term. And let's be honest, the Eldtich bullshit is the only reason to play a Warlock.

    • @doombybbr
      @doombybbr 6 років тому +11

      One short rest is all it takes to make up for the spell slot difference. Also I am currently playing warlock, and from my experience they seem rather useful even if you ignore eldritch blast or don't take that short rest. In my case it is infinite disguise self and an invisible familiar with a telepathy range of the entire plane(sprite familiar with Voice of the chain master and mask of many faces, I still deal decent damage despite not having agonising blast yet) - at level 3. This is before you count what I get from celestial patron.
      All the patrons give really useful abilities, from a mass charm spell that has its own separate slot, to gaining hit points each time you defeat an enemy, this is at level 1.

      Caer Ibormeith to be fair the Warlock’s cool ability comes at around level 14, I haven’t read Xanetar’s guide to everything, but the Great Old One Warlock has the ability to permanently charm any humanoid and give them order telepathically as long as both of you are on the same plane of existence, the Fiend gets the ability to instantly teleport any creature to the lower planes for a turn, and if the creature isn’t a fiend they take 10D10 psychic damage, and the Archfey can charm or frighten any creature for a minute (probably the worst final ability but you can reuse it after a short rest so at least you can use it consistently unlike the others)

      I'm no game dev, but I think that's intentional. At level 20, to an average NPC/commoner, you're basically a god (read: not actually a god). Having a weaker capstone ability entices you to continue playing the character to seek out more powers/abilities to compensate, and get rewarded with epic boons, which feel much more fitting.

    First off: great video and merry Christmas!
    Second: Warlock’s regain their spell slots after both short and long rests, which allows them to use spells such as fireball many more times than a wizard or sorcerer, if they took the Fiend pact. Alternatively, if one were to take the Archfey pact, you could use spells such as sleep and charm person many more times per day, allowing for a more pacifist play style.
    Third: a warlock’s spells are always at the same level, with the highest level your main slots moving up to being fifth, which, if you took the Fiend pact, allows you to cast fifth level fireballs many more times a Day than anyone else.
    Fourth: The Tome ability, if you took the book of ancient secrets invocation, you have the ability to learn any ritual in the game, which can get much better if your DM puts more spells as rituals, such as resurrection.
    Overall, Warlocks are one of the most powerful classes depending on your campaign and DM

      Warlock imo is one of the most flexible classes in terms of customization. You have several Patrons, Boons, and Invocations to pick from, several different playstyles (Blaster, Scout, Gish), and you are also capable of being the Face of the party, while also getting at will face swaps.

      Also a lot of patron abilities, including dark ones own luck are short rest, not long rest, making them extremely useful. The warlock will cast a 5th level spell 1 more time than anyone else BEFORE the short rest. They may lose out on 6th and 7th level by having 1 less slot, but they more than make up for it.
      Also the Pact of the chain can give you an INVISIBLE familiar as you are given additional options for the familiar that no-body else has.

    The warlock is not a class for beginners. You can make a character that is an absolute terror, but you can easily make one that is absolutely useless. Building a warlock can take careful planning and you can do some really weird thing with it. I ran a game that started at level 3 and I gave all the characters a free feat of their choice(I like doing that cuz it can make the characters seem more distinctive). My brother was hmmm... Mountain Dwarf Blade pact warlock with heavily armored. and I'm taking devil sight and [the invocation that allows you to speak to peoples minds. I forget what it is called]. He takes the darkness spell. He asks me if it is ok for his spell focus to be a crystal eye. I say that is fine. He then asks if he is allowed to cast darkness on it alone without the rest of he body I say that is also fine. Then he is like ok my character has an eye patch I keep over that eye. His fighting style proceeds to be cast darkness on crystal eye flip open eyepatch when ever he wants the darkness to escape(which is most the time) then walk into a strategic spot that allows him to blind a number of enemies with the darkness while still leaving his allies targets to hit. He has advantage on every attack because of darkness + devil sight and chain mail because of mountain dwarf + feat, and he uses his free action every turn to talk directly into his enemies minds and eat away at there mental state by either taunting them saying creepy things or just laughing maniacally(one again only psychically). Also his stat rolls on that character were obscene. He rolled 4 15s.
    Edit: The mind talking thing was a Deep Old One feature. His second invocation was being able to use detect magic at will. The idea of his character being deeply rooted in being able see things which is another reason why he wanted his spell focus in his eye.

      yknow whats amazing though? having a spell that can deal 1d10+5 damage consistently at long range for free, all the time, and at level 5 you can cast it twice a turn, and pushing or pulling and/or even slowing down 10 ft all on the targets you hit... you get to do ALL OF THIS with eldritch blast, twice a turn once youre level 5. you arent even even needing a spell slot to deal such high outputs of free cost damage.
      yknow whats also amazing though? all the free cantrips warlocks get are better than other classes normal cantrips
      yknow whats even better than wizard and sorcerer spell slot nonsense? casting more powerful spells of fireball and such and only needing a short rest to restore spell slots.
      ive a warlock, first time player playing with us, and hes been dominating the lvl 5 fights hes been in, not outright in how showy or flashy it is but just with pure damage hes been able to consistently hit at least 1 eldritch blast a turn and give high amounts of damage others just cant put out with basic hits... why? eldritch blast with agonizing blast. hes doing better than the great sword paladin and the twice attacking barbarian for damage when he strikes, and absolutely devastates enemies that attack him with a DC 14 hellish rebuke whenver hes damaged. wiping the enemies off the map at times with that 4d10 fire damage.

    • @Talarue
      @Talarue 6 років тому +2

      I feel like it isn't actually that hard to avoid the lawful stupid thing. People just enjoy trolling. Lawful Good is not hard, just be heroic you don't need to be overbearing about it. Adhering to the Oath is not that hard, people are just turds about it.

    • @Wraithninja1
      @Wraithninja1 6 років тому

      I guess you're right that it's not hard to avoid lawful stupid. Still, one can have friction if your party leans strongly towards murder-hoboism. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on those kinds of situations.

    • @Talarue
      @Talarue 6 років тому

      Depends, there are the type of murder-hobo. If you mean find enemy smash them get paid then just focus on finding evil enemies to smash. If you are getting into the more morally gray area then maybe go with Oath of Conquest. Lord knows those guys aren't exactly nice. Or, more humorously, an Oath of Redemption Paladin trying to make the rest of the group better people. Ultimately it comes down to communicating with other players/ the DM. Make your Paladin fit the party. Don't try to force the party around the Paladin. Sometimes characters just don't mesh.
      Of course all of this is Reliant on you actually caring about everyone's fun and not being an incurable troll. Now if you didn't realize that your party was going to be a bunch of murder hobos and you went Oath of the Divine maybe try the oblivious angle? Really it depends on the situation. Communication helps and if someone is actively ruining the fun of everyone else or if someone is getting alienated by the group discussing OOG and trying to come to some sort of compromise is always preferable to a group schism.
      It just occurred to me you may not have necessarily meant MY thoughts but well you have them anyway. Hope this helps somehow.

    • @Talarue
      @Talarue 6 років тому

      People still tend toward lawful alignments with Paladins. Just due to the nature of being bound by an oath it typically makes sense. Granted the only Paladin I ever played got killed level one(the saltiest I have ever gotten with other players is D&D, let's just say it was beyond preventable).

By level 10 you cease to eat, drink and sleep, you age 10x slower, and the funniest feature of all - if you lose a limb, you can reattach it by simple healing (no need for the "Regeneration" spell), although the last one is heavily dependent on how much "into" limb loss and mutilation your DM is.

      All your spells count as the highest level you can cast them at.
      So your fireballs are bigger than anybody else's, your lightning bolts are stronger than anyone else's, by default.
      You also have the best cantrip, which is effectively a ranged 2handed longsword that hits 4 times. Fighters have to wait till level 20 to get 4 attacks, you get it at level 17 and can do it from 300 feet away, and add your charisma to the damage, and push them 15 feet away...
      And you can have a sword and actually be good at stabbing people, which is something the wizard and bard cant say, and the sorcerer can only say it after a dip into paladin.

They also get the most powerful cantrip in the game - eldrich blast, and can buff it to 1d10+5 +1d6 per hit for an average of 13 damage per hit or 49 damage if you count all 4.

      Well yeah it _SOUNDS_ like garbage, if you take this video seriously. All jokes aside, there's a lot more going on with the Warlock beyond the details given here. The video creator just focused on what he did for the sake of brevity and comedic effect.
      For example, sure Warlocks have limited spell slots compared to everyone else. But they also _replenish_ those slots much faster (requiring only an hour of rest, instead of 8 hours of rest). And since the spell slots all scale to higher levels as the Warlock levels up, they can end up dealing more damage over the course of a day than other spellcasters. Pact magic was actually so potent in certain circumstances, they had to be selective about what spells they allowed Warlocks to learn, to prevent them from majorly breaking the game. Warlocks can't cast Animate Dead because, at 2 or 3 _per hour_ , a Warlock could easily amass a small army of zombies and skeletons with a few days work.
      Some Invocations don't seem impressive, unless you remember that one third of DnD is Exploration and another third is Social Interaction (only the last third is Combat). And so the ability to get information out of animals or read any language can be potent outside the battlefield. Other Invocations are practically cheating, like the one that gives you at-will Disguise Self, allowing you to assume any appearance for as long as you wish. Or the one that lets you summon an elemental to fight for you.
      Then there's how the different moving parts of the Warlock - the Patron, the Pact Gift, the Spells, the Invocations - all interact and play with one another. Giving the Warlock a great deal of flexibility and synergy. The pact of the tome, for instance, doesn't _just_ give you three Cantrips. It gives you three Cantrips _from any Class_ . It also has a Tome Pact specific Invocation that lets you learn Ritual spells (basically spells that can be cast for free, though with a longer cast time), _also_ from any Class (not even the Wizard's Ritual spell rules are that expansive). The Blade Pact, meanwhile, has a whole mess of Invocations that enhance the Warlock's ability to fight on the front lines.

      No it’s pretty much just a blazing dumpster fire.

      Warlocks also get the best combat cantrip in the game, and the ability to improve it even further with invocations. So, y'know, there's that.

    Smh. Warlocks are one of the most powerful classes. You have less spell slots and options but you get them back on short rests. That’s 1 hour of chilling compared to 8 hours of sleeping. Also Mystic Arcanum lets you choose literally any spell of the level you’ve unlocked from any spell list. Also some of the invocations are extremely powerful. Don’t underestimate the warlock just because you don’t understand them.

    • @doombybbr
      @doombybbr 6 років тому +3

      Actually arcanum is warlock spell list only(Which still means some rather scary spells). But the pact of chain, blade,tome can all be useful and the Patron abilities are all awesome.

      Yeah and the Great Old One’s Create Thrall ability can be game breaking from a role playing standpoint, you can make the most powerful character in the setting your puppet and order them to give you a noble title or the entire kingdom’s treasury.

      The Warlock is the most dangerous spell caster, largely because until you've played one or until you've played with a quality one, their whole kit looks weak as hell.
      "They only get *FOUR* spells? What kind of caster only gets 4 spells!"
      The kind of caster that doesn't need to waste slots on Detect Magic, Comprehend Language, Disguise Self, Polymorph, Fireball (depending on your pact), Dominate Person/Monster (Depending on your pact), Darkness, Darkvision, True Seeing, etc.
      "Theyre spell casting only goes up to 5th level? That's absurd!"
      Mmhm, it *IS* absurd that every spell they cast is at 5th level. Automatically. That amounts to 5 people in a Hold Person spell, or 5 people with an Invisibility spell. And they get these back on a short rest! Thats just completely absurd...
      "Wow. These boons kinda suck. A weak sword, a few cantrips, or a free pet?"
      The sword gives you Paladin smites later on, without a single level in Paladin. (Remember, every spell you surrender is a 5th level spell once you have 5th level spells, so ya know... 5th level smite damage.) You also CREATE the weapon spontaneously, so you'll never need to be visibly armed. A great trick to have at parties.
      The book leads to ritual casting and a few other goodies, depending on the patron. You probably won't NEED the cantrips, since Eldritch Blast is the BEST cantrip but you can take them from any class spell list. Vicious mockery is good fun. Nothing like insulting your opponents to death.
      The familiar seems weak until you realize that amounts to permanent advantage, amongst other boons. The help action can be very OP.

      Heimskr, Prophet of Talos
      You don’t even need to take a level in Paladin if you take the UA invocations. Also yeah I screwed up the mystic arcanums are warlock spell list only. Still quite a selection.

    after playing multiple classes and subclasses, I always come back to playing warlock because to me it is fun and my personal favorite class, in the two main campaigns my group is running, I have one that is a hexblade pact of the blade and I am doing the damage in the group, and in the other I am a celestial with pact of the tome, so I am essentially the medic, this is why I like warlock, very versatile and just overall fun to play and can fill almost any hole the party might have, it is honestly my favorite class in D&D.

    Man I'm jealous of you guys. So young yet great and creative vids. Really like the pact blade summon humor.
    But ya when you go on Reddit and other DND forums to discuss which classes have the potential to overwhelm your enemies it was a lot or warlock and druid early on. Warlocks can be very OP.

    Great video as usual, you guys are great. Anyways, I do have a bit of a request although I doubt it will happen or even get seen: If you're next HOW TO PLAY was Mystic, that would be awesome. I'm sure you guys could make tons of jokes with how confusing the class is, but it's one of my favorite classes flavor-wise! One final note: I bet you guys could also do something hilarious with the level 20 Psionic Body ability.

    I just started watching these t-minus when I woke up about ten minutes ago. And I gotta say these are really helpful. Anyone just starting to play d&d and trying to force your friends into playing. (Me) These videos will help you get through that awkward beginning of “what the hell are we doing guys, there’s just too many rules to keep up with.” Stage.

    If you allow Unearthed Arcana, Warlock + Fighter is sick! I have a Raven Queen Warlock with Tunnel Fighter and a whip (with Spell Sniper, War Caster, and the Homebrew Whip Master). Add Booming Blade / Green Flame Blade and a Spiritual Weapon (and, of course, Action Surge), you can dish out some serious damage, with reach, even when it isn't your turn - all by Level 8! Then you can either focus on Fighter Maneuvers or Warlock Invocations, depending on if you want to focus more on melee combat or cool (at will!) spells.
