    Great discussion and valuable insights.
    Supercaps in a DAC power supply does wonders to improve the sound quality. At 3.3v, digital circuits are great candidates. Two caps in series work well with tons of safety margin.

      At 3.3V, two of the 3volt supercap offer plenty of safety margin. Unfortunately, not the same case when we are dealing with 30V or more.

      @@angela-gilbert Agreed. I won't even try for 16v supplies. But at 3.3v a pair of caps don't even need a balancing circuit. I also find that a small 1.5F cap does a lot. Many agree that 300F is better, but now you're into big money, massive and dangerous.

    There is also another reason, why many small capacitors in parallel are better than just a few very large capacitors: when connecting, the capacity adds up but the impedance every capacitor has, gets smaller. High impedance slows the charging and discharging process down. There are some manufacturer who prefer many small capacitors rather than one or two large ones. Anyway, nice video. Thanks.

    Just a little tidbit to make it even more complicated: There are about six different kinds of "regular capacitors," all with their own particular strengths and weaknesses. Not just ceramic and electrolytic anymore.

      @@angela-gilbert Well, I recently went to buy some "electrolytic capacitors," and discovered that that term is basically obsolete, as is the concept of 'lytic cap we all remember from the 80s and 90s. So I shared what I found.
      I'm an EE and my main experience is in electronics manufacturing. And you're absolutely right, nobody knows everything.. but we definitely do know what products are made and available when it comes to capacitors!
      I see SC's used most in applications where peak current and voltage stability over time are not crucial; just long-term power storage. Kind of like a battery. Tried to replace a battery with a SC once, but it wasn't as good and I just got another battery.

    • @angela-gilbert
      @angela-gilbert  4 місяці тому

      @@jamesmurphy449 SC is nowhere near as good as battery as a long term energy storage. They are mainly for medium term low discharge application. Use them replace the battery holding a memory inside a PC or laptop is not a bad idea. Use them as backup storage for low to medium low current draw with regular electrolytic capacitor is ok too but not all by themself. The so-called hybrid lithium-ion supercap is another story. They are really a lithium-ion battery in a capacitor package.
      Overall, I have no argument with your point of view though.

    What caps wear out after only 14 months? If that’s the case you are using some crap capacitors. They should last 150,000 hours or more, which is around 18 years!

    • @angela-gilbert
      @angela-gilbert  4 місяці тому

      Did I say wear out? I said some manufacturer's warranty period for their supercap is only for 10,000 hours. Which is not the same as wear out. Most of them don't publish their warranty period. Read their fine print. Look at their estimate capacitance variation graphs. Have you thought about why they are an estimation? What were they based on?

    • @BrentLeVasseur
      @BrentLeVasseur 4 місяці тому

      @@angela-gilbert If you are concerned with a capacitor’s warranty period, then you chose the wrong capacitor brand. With a good capacitor you wouldn’t ever need a warranty. And with high end audio gear, having your caps replaced after say 10-15 years is not an issue if its a high quality device, but most people won’t even need to worry about that. If you are spending say $5,000 on a DAC or Pre-Amp then cap maintenance after a decade is not a big deal. You are talking $150-200 to replace all,the caps on a $5,000 high end piece of gear.
