A piece of America died when the last steam locomotive was taken out of non-excursion/tourist service. I don't know what I find more stunning...That something like this was ever imagined, designed and built in the first place? Or that all the fine people at Union Pacific had the wisdom, finances, patience and passion to bring 4014 back for all of us to enjoy once again? To every one who helped make this possible...thank you! And VintageSlots, thank YOU for taking and sharing this glorious footage from such a unique perspective. I have to go and wring out my mop just now...more foam still left to clean up.

Yep fella, we're awaiting for #4014's first run with great anticipation..! Many of us have been keeping up with it's progress and was knocked
back a couple of days ago when 4014 was standing outside the steam shop and having the whistle installed and fine tuned..! The steam shop
guys have done a fantastic job with the restoration, and although we won't be there to see 4014 in the flesh, we will be watching closely on
UA-cam for all the uploaded videos from all the foamers and rail fans..! Hope you enjoyed the Bluebell railway which gives just a small idea
of train travel in the UK back in the day..!
      Cheers.

Great Drone footage... Thank You! I'm "paused" at the 6:15 point in the video.... I've noticed an "issue" with the 4014 soon after it came into view and have been watching it getting worse as they're ascending the grade, and that is - Too Much steam loss from both the front engine's cylinders, especially on the engineers (Ed's) side... it "appears to be" (meaning, Not saying it is for sure) an issue with the piston rod/valve packing in the cylinder itself, as it is definitely in time with each stroke rearward that there is excessive steam pressure loss... I'm sure they will stop an have a look as there should be a noticeable loss in power. Could also be an issue with cylinder lubricator..... hope it's an easy fix, whatever it is, time is fast running out for them.

@@VintageSlots ..... Thank you sir, I appreciate your response. I just spotted a new posting today of it at Nunn, CO. from last night, after dark...and as it came past the camera to a stop I could see a fair amount of steam escaping from the front cylinder on Ed's side, just as it was earlier when you were shooting the drone footage, the fireman's side (was Ted firing for Ed yesterday?) appeared to be fairly normal.
The whistle was sounding a little on the "raspy" side as well, not really clear and well defined as it did in earlier videos from yesterday. Thank you again, for the great aerial footage... sound would have been great, but at that altitude, I'm sure there would not have been that much to hear anyway... it wasn't being worked very hard.
PS: I sure hope that they have the water "chemistry" all sorted out by now.... the 844 seems to be doing well on it so far, so.. it seems to be all ok, now.

Audio from a camera with a drone would normally be drowned out by the drone buzz. Recording usable audio would require a separate recording source, and then edited and then synced with the video. That would need to be set and planned in advance, with recording gear set up either on the locomotive or a point or several points along the route.

There is restoration to a condition that a machine is safe to operate and rebuilding to a condition to perform as it was originally intended. If the big boy is in condition to do so, the ultimate spine chilling event would be to hitch to a fully loaded freight and make just one trip over the route that it was designed for.

VintageSlots.... Again, thanks for the great footage. I commented below about what "I" saw as a potential problem (IMHO) with the 4014 while was paused at the 6:15 point in your video.... then it came to a stop shortly after that as I noticed after writing my first comment.... do you know what the actual problem was - if it was with the cylinder or the lubricator, or ??? How long were they stopped for? I viewed a ground video of it later, after dark as it was coming back to the shop, in Cheyenne... but it and its train "appeared" to be under control (powered by...) by the diesel.

Just a nomenclature thing from a flight instructor who is also a Part 107 guy: there is NO restricted airspace at Cheyenne. Cheyenne is in Class D airspace, which is tower-controlled airspace. To fly a sUAS there, you need specific authorization from air traffic control. Since Cheyenne does not yet participate in the automated Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC), you have to apply for authorization from the FAA via the website.
An example of Restricted Airspace is along the Pacific Coast near Vandenberg AFB (and even there, a civilian can get in flying a manned aircraft if they follow procedure).
Why do I harp on this? As a pilot and instructor who wants to see the sUAS industry succeed and integrate into the National Airspace System, I want to impress on our newest members of the aviation community that words are important for clear communication.

Seen the new video of Union Pacific 4014 it's surprising how small of a load that 4014 is pulling. Verses the videos from the 1950s show that engine could pull a load 4 to 5 miles long, so I wonder why Union Pacific chose to put such a small load on its on it first run of this century?

When you fly a drone, the sound can be captured, but it is captured from the location of the pilot, not the UAV. He was probably a decent distance away as you can hear so faint sounds from when the whistle was blown. I do feel you are being a little ungreatful. He got some great footage and even observed them finding something to take a closer look at. Really cool, and I appreciate all of the effort and waiting that the OP took to get this for those of us that can't be there in person!

And the only sound you would hear would be the drone's propellers which sound like a swarm of pissed-off bees.

Looks like many didn't bother to read it was drone footage. And also many don't seem to know adding the sound does not always produce the best of results regarding drones.
