Happy New Year everyone! Last video of 2022! Onwards and upwards next year💪
Great content as usual, all the best for 2023.
And to you and your family as well. Thanks for your channel. It has 100% given me the kick up the backside I needed this year.
Happy new year best wishes !
Happy New Years! Thanks for the entertainment and reinforcement to keep being above average 😉
Happy New Year to you, Jen, n the family. Thanks for the contnually great content, laughs, and motivational banter. Aw the best fae Jim, Rhona n family.
I told my family last night that I'm going to start training for a 50k race and virtually everyone laughed and then proceeded to tell me that it was unachievable, but I'm not going to let that hold me back.
Dude 18 months ago I was obese at 21st I said I would climb a mountain to my family and they laughed.
So fast forward I’m now 15st and have climbed 18 mountains in that time frame. Fuck em, you’ll smash it
Do it, do it, do it!!!!
honestly you'd have to be really ill or obese not to complete a 50k race with no training, so I hope with training you'll complete it with style and ideally NOT last ;)
YOU GOT THIS!!!!
Go get it mate !!
"You will be told complete fucking gibberish nonsense by people who's opinion you might normally respect"
This one is spot on and to be honest slightly heartbreaking. I've found that removing activities and habits that are bad for my body threw a wrench into many of my friendships.
Thanks for the entertainment through 2022, let 2023 be even better.
You’re not alone!
I want a Christmas T-shirt with “Garmin Or Gremlin”
⌚️😈
Family and friends bit was particularly spot on. When I was in shape everyone had an opinion on me doing too much. Now I’m 20kgs fatter, they didn’t have a word to say…
Bonkers isn't it! 😁
Yeah, I've noticed that too. Since I got back on things seriously 2 years ago, aged 44, everyone has an opinion on what I'm doing (too much rowing, too much weights, how much HIIT?!?).
@@duncanhamilton5841 It's not applicable to exercising only. Generally the more passionate about things you become in life, the more your surrounding will be trying to undermine you. Even those closest to you, the so called "loved ones". Passions must always be fought for.
In my experience ( and I have had a fair bit in this area ) they are trying to keep you at, or bring you down to their level.
Sub consciously we make them feel bad about things like their own weight and or fitness, and lack of discipline to do something about it.
I had this yesterday. I refused to eat more at a party. Comments abound. Im 15kg down, aiming at another 10kg off this year. When I was fat, nothing was said
Some great advice Mark re doing it for yourself and ignoring naysayers. At 65 I decided to get a grip of my 10 year weight gains a few years ago by using a calorie counter app and a lot of cycling (went from around 105 kg down to 80kg at 5'11" over 6 months) and here's a sample of a few supportive family comments - "Aren't you a bit old to be doing all this dieting" - "Don't lose any more weight, it makes you look ill" - "Why are you doing this to yourself, it can't be much fun, you shouldn't worry about it at your time of life". Fortunately I was more interested in my health than what they thought. To be fair I did lose a bit of muscle along with the fat so I got into weight training to build it back. Weight's crept up a bit and I'm now maintaining at around 85 - 86kg. Sure, I could still do with getting rid of a the love handles and firming up a bit more so a way to go. Definitely not going back to the way I was feeling carrying all the extra weight and I do feel more in control now.
Being at a below 25 BMI makes someone look ill? Jesus, how far have we strayed...
Did my first parkrun today Mark. Thanks for the motivation
Fantastic! Now go back next week faster !!!!! It gets addictive!
@@MarkLewisfitness ill be doing 26 next year. Starting next Saturday. I have two half marathons in the summer. The goal, to beat half the pack. Missed it by a hair today, but won't in future!
Greta stuff Andy!
@@gowanlock can I ask what your 5k time was? I ran my first 5k Monday but was alone, did it in 28:50 according to my watch. But I have no idea where that falls at a real 5k with people
@@Sam-kn2mm I did my first official 5k race on 18.12. (did a couple of half marathons before, but this was my first 5k run without "holding back") and I finished with 27:12 and 19th out of 43. With your time you would have been 24th, which is amazing 😊
“It’s not what you eat between Christmas and new year that counts, it’s what you eat between new year and Christmas that matters” is one of best sayings I’ve heard. The other is never tell anyone that your on a diet always say Nutrition. No Matter how much weight you have lost or how healthy you get if the uncommitted see you eating a 1 cookie or donut. And know your on a diet they’ll be straight over with age old “so your off your diet then”. No I never was on a diet I changed my nutrition because “I was advised too” or “ I have no energy” “ I fancied a change”. I’ve know this because I’ve been through it.
Oh I'm definitely using this, thank you! Everyone rolls their eyes when my wife and I turn down unhealthy stuff because we say we're on a diet. In their eyes we're "skinny" (we're objectively not, but compared to average we are) Using one of those will cut that way down
Something I learned from the stop-drinking zeitgeist: Every morning you go for a run or bike ride instead of having 3 bowls of coco pops is one more day in your life you did something healthy. Stack up those days and things will change. Try it today, try again tomorrow. If you are waiting for a special day to start trying, why are you surrendering the days between now and then?
It's like you heard my mother speak to me since I lost 18kg, got strong, and managed my first half marathon last weekend! Thanks for the sanity check my friend!
The comment about families opinions are spot on. Almost every time I come back from a gym class, my (overweight) Mother asks me how it went and I say it was really hard,....she just says "well, you shouldn't do it then" 🤦♂
LOL, "try keto", that got both my siblings. Cut to me awkwardly explaining to people that the "diet" I'm on is that I'm eating less. The looks I get... But honestly when I naturally intermittently fast and naturally don't eat a lot of carbs, all I really needed to do was throttle back the cake, french fries, and fancy burgers to only once a week and it's pretty much a diet plan.
As an elite national team level sportsman, you opened my eyes about the surrounding people. Yes i knew that having good support is important, but kinda took it granted because over time my family really supported me and my only friends are also all sportsmans.
To someone who isn’t surrounded by well minded people in this subject, all of the things are so much harder.
Really like your style of content, keep it up!
Thanks so much for the encouraging video Mark! I've been running consistently for over 2 years now. I must say I was very self conscious when I 1st started and was very embarrassed to run in the street thinking that people were staring at me and judging me. Now 2 years later I actually look forward to running on sidewalks along busy streets purposefully so that people will stare. At the risk of sounding snobbish, I now get a thrill in being stared at by everyone knowing full well that I am a rarity in my city bc very few are out running, whether its 90F (32C) in summer or 27F (-2C) in the depths of the winter going against a freezing headwind.
I wish all those getting started on their fitness journeys the very best. Just start small to stick with it. I began my running journey by maybe doing 6 miles (9.6 km) per week just a mile or two at a time. I am now up to 50 miles (80 km) per week and I do that consistently. I'm no one special and not even fast but I am very dedicated and very regimented with my training schedule. So it can be done with proper discipline.
Just another reminder of how great your presentation style is! The prep work you do to construct and form the thoughts you want to share really shows. I often find myself watching other content and wishing I could get the Mark Lewis style and delivery. It’s straight talk. It’s motivational. It’s relatable. Happy new year to you and yours. Looking forward to more ML in 2023.
Spot on. Overweight people always have advice on weight loss ( perhaps they lost weight and never kept it off) and non runners always have an opinion about how it's bad for your knees, though they've never even run for the bus.
When you’re thinking about health, or goals, I always remember the line “a year from now you will wish you started today”.
This is resonating with a lot of us, I've been told "but your not an athlete!" and "aren't you taking this too seriously?" Amongst others.
I started jogging 3 days ago because of your videos interesting me and wanting to get in good cardio shape for the soccer men’s league I’m playing in in the spring. At 6’3 210 my legs haven’t been a fan of this so far but I can only assume the soreness stops happening after a while. Going for my ambitious goal of haven’t run for 10 years to 5k by the end of January. Wish me luck lol
Hey mate. I started running again 4 months ago. Well, not running just a walk jog 😂. 6ft 4, 280 lb. Thighs were sore to start. Took about a month for the knees to stop hurting. Pushed through it and my longest run without stopping is 11kms. Have fun. 😊
I started running during Covid and yes, everything hurt for a couple of weeks, but it absolutely DOES get better. I felt like I had every running moan and groan going but they all gradually subsided. I watched a great video which said "decide if something is an injury or a whinge-ury' and I think thats bang on. Vast majority are the latter.
The soreness stops pretty quickly, 1 week down the road you get use to it tbh
Listen to your legs at the very beginning. I did my first-ever run six months ago. 2 kilometers. I was surprised that 1) the Nike Run Club coach in my ear didn't have me walk-run; and 2) my shins were perfectly fine. The soreness in my quads came on the next day, and I didn't run that day or the next to give my body a chance to repair itself. I did my first 5k run eight days later. It was worth taking that first couple days off let my body figure out what was happening to it. I still have the same formula: Soreness = recovery (often a recovery run); injury = don't run. Figure out what's happening.
I tried bouldering at the start of 2022 and fell in love with it. Finding a healthy activity that you really want to do is a great consistency builder. The hard part now is resting enough because all I want to do is go climbing!
As someone a bit OCD I used to get obsessed with writing out a plan with all the numbers, reps, sets, weights, which days to train which muscle, which muscles to train together etc. I found this just distracted me from actually doing it. Now I just train randomly, I don't count anything or monitor anything, I don't take notes or make a journal, no diet or training plan. All I do is that I try to make sure I train every day and that it is a worthwhile workout, so reps to failure etc. That's it, and I'm a 1000% better off for it and looking forward to where this approach leads. I don't have anyone or anything that is motivation, I train alone at home as there is no way on this earth I will go out after work to a gym.
Im Not crazy, im Just Not you.. Goggins! Carry on.
Your take on the influencers and social media folks not representing "normal people" was absolutely spot on. Thank you for the motivational words. Its been a blast binging your videos after discovering your channel last week
One thing that I have learned from trying to get better at running is that the first step of the journey is always the hardest. The hardest part is deciding to start.
Hey Mark! Found your channel days ago and have binged (for lack of a better word) your videos. You are awesome! I recently lost 100lbs since March 2022 doing non stop calorie restriction. I also lift three days a week and do daily cardio (which right now is 45 minutes a day on my Schwinn Airdyne bike puts me at about 16.2-16.5 miles daily). Anyway the last month or so my will of steel has been tested and I’ve been on some binges. In the end I haven’t gained but also haven’t lost so I’ve been stuck at about 197lbs for a while (I’m 6’1”). I weigh weekly and I’ll go up 4 lbs but the week after I’m down 5…etc. I find that sometimes - oddly enough - after I way overeat I seem lighter the next day like I lost weight. Anyway your videos on what you do have been a help and I appreciate your work. I’m in the old colonies…Boston area.
"The best time to plant a tree is now" philosophy. Good stuff, and time tested.
Truth!
@@MarkLewisfitness secondary thought, thanks for vocalizing the obvious stuff. I appreciate hearing you reinforce the uncomfortable thoughts I'm sure most of us have. I know doing XYZ is good for me already, but it helps drive it home when somebody that has walked the walk speaks it. "I should" vs "I am".
Over 30 years ago, my GP told me that running was bad for me. Did I listen? No. Am I still running aged 66? Yes.
"Doesn't know Garmin from Gremlin" had me 😂
I started running in January 2022. Did my first half marathon in May and my first full marathon in December.
On New Year's Eve I did my 10th or so 10 km race - and I finished *ABOVE AVERAGE* for the first time! (13th/40 in my age group with a PB of just under 49 minutes.)
That phrase of yours really stuck: above average. I'm proud and grateful to have made it there. Your videos played a huge role in my journey. Thank you very much
Oooh. First baby
Thanks for the motivation Mark and Happy New Year!
Excellent. Have a great 2023.
Currently sat in bed eating quality streets, once this box is gone, sensible eating again
This was my first Xmas/New Year since I started running regularly. I did 4 parkruns and 2 x 10K's between Xmas Eve and New Years Day and most of my family and friends said I was a "glutton for punishment" when in reality I loved every minute of it 😁. I even saw you guys at the Sherfield 10K "mud swim" 😆
Well said, Mark. What a great year for you and the channel, excited to keep up with the journey!
Happy New Year Mark. Thanks for the excellent videos this year 👍

Happy new year to you, Jen and the family Mark. You’ve motivated me to start running again, always in the gym but neglected that cardio skill for sometime now
Your message is on point, as always!

These videos just hit different! Great points of view!
Happy new year Mark and co. I appreciate the laughs and content you’ve done this year. One of few content creators who keep it 100 real
Happy new year mark! Loved discovering your channel in 2022. And on Christmas Eve ran a park run pb of… 20:22! Hoping to dip under the 20 minute mark in 2023. You’re one of the main reasons I’m anywhere close
Amazing video!!!👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌👌👌👌
Happy new year!!🎉🎊🎆

Great video, Mark.
Man, I love your videos. I didn't have enough time to watch the full video this am, and started to close it out and every time I did, there was a joke or nugget, or something that kept me here. Keep up the great work!

your gift of gab and humor while addressing fitness and nutrition topics is appreciated! I'm glad I found your channel Thx! and Happy New Year!
Quality advice 👍🏻
I'm getting back into "serious" running aged 60, after a 27 year absence.. after taking early retirement i made a conscious effort to think more healthily and look after myself without work hindering me. i'm coming up to my 50th parkrun, completed the 2022 great south run and am now following a half marathon training plan on my garmin and aiming to take part in Reading in April. Your videos are inspiring, informative and helping to keep me interested and motivated - keep them up and hope you and your family have a great 2023!
Another brilliant video keep up the good work
I love the dry humour…….can’t wait for 2023 🎉 all the very best one and all. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Thank you. That’s exactly, what I needed to hear after the holidays. 😅
Nice one, Mark. Cheers, mate.
One of your best - simultaneously motivating and hilarious.
Love the content. I have been watching forever it feels like. Congrats on being on Greg’s top 10 fitness UA-camrs this year.
Thanks chief!!!!!
Great pep talk!
14 months on from making a few life changing decisions this is a timely revisit of my changes!
Great motivation!
Thank you
Hard truths with harder laughs. I've learned to take specific advice from specific people. I wouldn't take financial advice from someone who is always broke, so I won't take health/fitness advice from someone who lives a very unhealthy life. Having a husband and family who don't share my passion for fitness, but fully support me, makes me incredibly lucky. Now I just need to prioritize my diet and running, to improve my consistency.
just the video i needed thanks for the motivation. just starting my journey to improved fitness and weight loss.
Always the mince pies first Mark... Priorities :)
Also, best wishes to you and your family. You've given me lots of smiles this year, and I look forward to your video's next year.
Love these videos common sense told in a informative and amusing way. Started weight training 4 months ago and still motivated to do it. Cheers Mark you are a star.
Cheers for that! I will come back to this video anytime I feel I am fighting an uphil battle, alone.
..and thermodynamics absolutely ROCKS!... bon appetit on those mince pies 👍👍👍
Happy new year!
This has been an amazing year for my fitness journey, got into running (partly thanks to you and your channel) gone from the odd 5k with my dog to a bunch of 10k races and 3 half marathons over 2 months and managed to shed about 18kg in the process!
Huge thank you for everything you do, keep up the good work and looking forwards to 2023😁
Happy new year to you Mark and the Lewis family. Apparently most people give up on a new years resolution in the first two weeks, but those who keep going have a higher chance to keep it as a habit.
Thanks so much for this. Finally forced myself to watch. After finding you last year and finally getting somewhere that I was happy, I broke my foot and being having a pity party for one. The thought of starting again fills me with dread but your video has inspired. Thanks again and Happy New Year. 🎉
