To be honest, if your story is 100% true, then I see how you got the job. Being able to argue back with your superiors in a professional way is a plus. Even if you didn't know what a spectrophotometer was, that has got to be one of the easiest machines to use (also doesn't matter if it's GC, AAS, UV, IR, etc) and teach. You probably came across as an amicable person which is highly lacking in laboratory jobs. So you can do the main thing that they're looking for, have enough pride in your work to defend it, and will get along with people. That's a candidate there.
Disclaimer: Used to be a biochemist.

To be fair, it's the fact that they probably left with assumption that he was lying about it that matters more than anything. Basically, it makes them think "If he lied about that, what else is he lying about?". Which is not good, more than whether he's actually familiar with the tool or not.

@Average Joesson I'm sure he has his degree. No one's assuming he's lying. Just saying he's kinda dumb. Yes, they all look basically the same. I mean, if you see ANY machine in a chem lab, you can be fairly fucking certain it's a spectrophotometer solely based on being a gadget plugged into the wall. Like, if you do chemistry, a good portion of your job can often revolve around them, and they are absolutely ubiquitous.

I once interviewed for a job where the guy who would be my boss said, "It says on your resume that you've done estimates using COCOMO II. Why haven't you used a more recent version."
To which the only correct answer is, "Because there isn't a more recent version." I seriously thought he was testing me on my knowledge of the tools.
"Oh yeah, they're up to 6 now."

I was once interviewed by a partner from a law firm who kept his feet on his table for the most part of the meeting. On another interview for a company, I was asked to write two essays, one in English and another in Portuguese, and also make a logic test, even though I have two LLM degrees. This took me about 4-5 hours to accomplish. Despite all this bs tests, I was never called for a single interview. Apparently my CV was "too good for the position", which I only knew due to the fact my friend worked for the same company and recommended me for the position. Interviews can really suck, specially if you are struggling financially while seeking a job, and most interviewers do not care at all about the hasle you are going through.

They didn't even care that I had prior knowledge of what the electronics were and what they could do. I like to ask the Bullshit Interview Questions (eg "Why should we hire you", "Why do you think you'd be a good employee", "What are you looking for") at the end of the process, basically after I've already decided if they're hired, just to see what they say. I've had people say something akin to "I need money and you need a worker"; and I've had people talk about "Opportunities for growth blah blah blah". If the interviewer bases hiring off one of these questions it's because they have no idea what they're doing (may or may not be their fault).

I had a similar experience. I arrived for an interview, and the lady before me hadn't left yet. The boss was a man. They both seemed to go along very well. The space was small so I could hear them talking: Boss: "You have so many of the skills and knowledge I am looking for, and the things you don't know are very easy to learn", and so on and so forth, for about 15 minutes or half an hour. He was totally on to her. After she left, I went on with my interview, CONVINCED I was screwed. But I did it with very good humor, doing jokes, and giving genuine answers - I wasn't gonna get the job, so better be the most honest possible. Didn't want to waste my time unnecessarily either. My interview lasted about half an hour, maybe less. And guess what? Got a call home about 1 hour later. It was the boss: "Bad news for you - YOU GOT THE JOB". Yeah, he's quite the joker.
That was about 2 years ago, and I'm still working there. I am so fit for the tasks at hand it's hard to believe.

I went home feeling great about how it went, all around good. I was told that they would contact me at X day by X time if I got it, and if not, no. Day comes, time goes, refreshing my email repeatedly....nothing.
Now, I was in the middle of changing my phone number during all this too. So I filled out the paperwork and initial stuff with one phone number, then during the interview, informed them that my number had changed and what the new one was. See, the hiring manager (not the one I interviewed with) didn't get that last bit. So, about a week after the day I should have found out, I got an email saying there was a messup about my phone number and I needed to contact them. Turns out I did get the job, and they basically just lost my new number!

I loved this story. Every job I ever got was one where I blew the interview. Every time. In fact, the one I have now, I totally botched a question, and when they called a month later and made an offer, stupid me said it wasn't enough money. I hung up facepalming and they called back 10 minutes later and agreed to my outrageous demand. Because I had over 10 years experience working with a particular software. I was the only one they interviewed that even knew what the software was. They would have paid me anything I demanded. Great video, so true.

Interviews are weird. One thing I've learned is that the 'tech' interviewer being mean and aggressive is a GOOD thing: it will allow you to show you know your stuff, and you KNOW you know your stuff.
There's nothing worse than a job interview with nothing but HR people, because then it doesn't matter how good you are at your job... just how good you are at pretending you're good.

Ya I have about 7 years of food industry experience in a kitchen and I have a degree in computer networking. I don't hate working in a kitchen, I actually kind of like it but my biggest issue is that no matter how many times I tried at two different locations I could never get some kind of weekend days off. Like not even one Saturday a month. I even had a hard time getting two days next to each other. My days off were always like a Monday and a Thursday.
If my only extra hobby was video games this would not be an issue, but I play airsoft, Warhammer 40k, and table top RPGs. This means the only days I can really do my hobbies are on a weekend as I have not been able to find any week day RPG groups in years and the only days with enough people to do airsoft or get more than half a game of Warhammer in are Friday-Sunday. Of course these are the days they need the most people working their shift.
Last year I got a job delivering pizza thinking it would be a bit more flexible than the kitchen I was basically running by myself (I cant understand the absolute basic levels of knowledge younger people have about kitchen work and safety). Turns out driver is the worst position you could have if you want flexibility. I still got two days off but it was every Monday (all of my go to hobby places are closed) and Thursday (the slowest days at my go to hobby places where you are lucky if 1 other person shows up when you are there). Every other day I closed (I was the one driver that closed almost every shift. Four out of 5 days a week.), and closing as a driver did not mean delivering until closing time nooo. Closing as a DRIVER meant you were required to wash all of the dishes, the back room, the lobby, and sit down with the manager to watch them as they counted all of the money. I did not get to leave until the manager left 4 days a week. So I was not home until after 2am 4 nights a week. Even if I was able to go do my thing on my days off I would be too tired.
I was told many times when bringing it up that they were hiring more drivers so they should be able to work with me on my schedule. Almost a year latter with no change and going through 20 different drivers nothing ever changed. I quit and am now looking for a new job, but I am done with service and retail jobs. Sadly however I will probably end up in another kitchen, and it is because like you said "Can you carry plates/cook shit? Yea, your hired." but I swear if I do than from the start in writing I will have no less than one weekend off a month.

My first job was as a third shift waiter at IHOP. The manager basically asked me if I got that I'd be working with a lot of drunk people and was I okay with that, and I'm like "yeah, no problem."
BTW, anyone getting into a job working with drunk people, the two most important things: 1) be okay with repeating yourself, a lot. Drunks have the attention span of a toddler on speed. 2) Drunks are VERY susceptible to suggestion. Like, none of you drinkers know just how easy it is to convince you of absolutely anything. This will work both for and against you. If a drunk person gets the idea into their head that something might be wrong, then something IS wrong, and YOU need to fix it RIGHT NOW or it's a personal insult. Likewise though, if you fiddle with a thing and tell them the problem is fixed, even if you haven't done anything, they'll think it's fixed. Aside from their overworked liver and the conversation they shuldn't be having with their ex, pretty much all of a drunk's problems are psychosomatic.
Anyway, I later found out that if that manager hired you, it was either because you were cute (if female) or white (if male). I was one of two white guys on third shift. The owner had apparently told the manager that he needed to hire more white people for the sake of racial diversity.
So yeah, especially for low level jobs, most companies need a person to do a thing. If that's you, then nothing else really matters.

This is exactly how interviews work. They are looking for something very particular and they don't want to train you on it but they don't tell you they only care about that particular thing so when you almost always fail the interview, you have no idea that it was for some obscure reason that had nothing to do with you.
Its a really unhealthy system. I don't think it benefits anyone really, not even the companies. But with the way that licensing is restricted and subsidized via university gatekeepers, and the way IQ tests are illegal to administer, there isn't a whole lot we can do about it.

Not really, entry level engineering jobs are looking for people with 3+ years of experience. Your bachelors doesn't count as experience, your research you did in undergrad OR graduate scool doesn't count as experience, your extracurriculars definitely don't count, and that little machine shop where you design the process to put out quality aerospace parts for the same company you're applying to doesn't count. Basically you have to have worked at the entry level job you're applying to for 3 years in order to get the entry level job... Or ya know. The way everyone I knew in college got their first "real engineering" job. Their parents worked there. That's not a conflict of interest or anything. Nope.
I'm probably never going to have an entry level engineering job. If the job postings are accurate I can apply for an engineering manager level 1 job in 3 more years of manufacturing experience.

@@anastasiacline6159 Hang in there. In the mean time, just keep throwing your resume out there for every position available in the country, work jobs (not necessarily your target job, but something somewhat related) in companies that have positions you desire so you can claim experience within the company and have better insight towards opening positions, develop extra skills future employers may desire, and make connections with people. These are all things you probably already know, and it is definitely a grind, but you will find success some day.
Although not for engineering, the situation is very similar for bachelor degree holders trying to get into certain mathematics fields; it took my girlfriend 3 or 4 years doing these things before a company hired her because basically every company looked for experience she did not have. It seems getting the initial experience is certainly the most difficult part.

"Sorry" she says the place I want to be for the interview is actually over the road in the derelict looking that doesn't even have the companies name on it despite being give this main building as the place to go.

I wouldn't have stood for that. I would've turned it around on the douche and would've said the following:
I WAS on time. You obviously have someone passing out incorrect directions working for you. You should get that fixed. Two, an empty reception room gives off the impression that you don't get a whole lot of business or you think that people who walk in will always wait for YOU and offer you THEIR business as compensation for YOUR time. Three, without proper identification of the business itself, how is ANYONE supposed to figure out that the facility across the street also constitutes a portion of your business property? Fourth, when I attempted to call you before I even arrived, no one answered the phone. Assuming that you're a successful company and you have someone manning your phones, this shouldn't have been an issue. Fifth, during the pre-interview phone call, I COULD have been told to look for the other building for the interview. Sixth, if you assume that you're much better than someone else and consider it a favor to be speaking to me about a job at all, but still have AT MINIMUM five other major red flags that maybe "I" shouldn't work here, you're not really in a position to boast. Now, does that about cover the interaction so far? How bout we try this again and wipe the slate clean? Hi, my name is "position filled." Where should I put my things?

It's not because your resume isn't sparkly enough, or your GPA wasn't high enough, or you picked the wrong tie, or because you think you didn't answer some of their questions like "what do you see yourself in 5 years" or "what is your weakness" and those kind of freaking garbage questions well enough. You can do everything PERFECTLY and still didn't get the job because they feel your experience isn't relevant enough, or they think someone else (even though not necessarily better than you in resume) is more fit to the job. It's always just a mix and match and you just have to be lucky and happen to hit the right place with the right experience (direct or even relevant) at the right time with the right people to get a job. This is kind of why networking works so well, it basically helps you skip the right people right place thing, and when your buddy knows somewhere is hiring now and put some good words for you, and then you tell them "yeah I have done something similar before I am sure this will be fine", and you are good to go..
I used to do the same "being obsessed with unimportant small details", and I think most people have this problem, most likely because it's related to confidence and how when you are fresh out of college you are over compensating and trying way too hard to impress because you are really worried no one will see you as capable of doing anything. Just forget about the small unimportant details and keep going and you will get something eventually.

I had a job interview for this beginning bookkeeper job. They asked me a question about the cash and accrual systems that aligns to when expenses and payments occur. For those that don't know, they are very beginner terms for anyone learning about it. So when I was asked that... I fumbled hard. Thankfully I remembered the other basics that I didn't fumble completely. Got a second interview after that lol

Okay so this story really touched me because I have a similar story almost exactly the same but not in biochemistry. I'm a welder and a pile driver and a fabricator... It's a very wide range of skills and I've done a very wide range of things and during the course of my life I picked the alignment to align with unions so none Union companies tend to not hire people that are union out of a scare that they're going to try to unionize their workforce shocker I know. So part way through the interview don't fact that I'm Union comes out and I can tell that it makes a lot of uneasy faces in the room, like people are glaring at me like I just raped someone. Shrugging It off I can turn you on talking about this project that project other than things I've worked on one of them nonchalantly ask if I've ever used this kind of electrode (it's what you use to weld with, specifically certain ones are harder to run than others) was like yeah I've use that new on this job no big deal. interview keeps going we got into the other projects I did and I told him about some of my mishaps just because well if you don't leave a story half told, you tell the full thing even if it ends badly. It's at the end of the interview I have an uneasy feeling that I'm not going to get called. About two weeks later I get a call from this company hey your Dave right? "We need to come in and weld for us" in the back of my mind I'm like wow I did really shity during that interview brought up things I probably shouldn't have and I'm Union which you don't like ( this is almost like a paladin working with the undead) when I get to the site I see a pallet of the electrode that they had nonchalantly ask me about during the interview. Turns out they had a very specific job that required a seismic rating ( stuff to make sure stuff doesn't fall down during earthquakes) and the very specific electrode that he asked about was pretty obscure, the other thing was is that it came out that I had experience welding on high strength steel another hard thing to do for some people. Long story short just because of the off-chance that I had experience with this one electrode they chose me......

Go to college they said, you'll find a high paying job in no time they said... Well I found a job I love and it pays well... And I didn't need to go to college for it. Fun fact, I am mostly self taught in Programming. I went to school for that. I am now a security guard and getting paid more then the programming job I originally went for. I sometimes wonder about that.

Well, you might be self taught and be great at a skill like programming, but if you show the company no credentials like a college degree or many years of experience your salary is going to be bad and you can find better compensation than that in other occupations, so no surprise there.

I totally agree with the video. It took me half a year to find my current job. I sent out lots and lots of applications and got a handful of interviews. People were trying to be "helpful" by telling me to write a better CV or to present myself better at interviews. At the end of the day, it's rarely about you, but about what they are looking for and who else they have already found.

Huh. I try being completely honest in resume and in the interview.
You'd honestly be shocked how many jobs I've successfully gotten by more or less being a warm body with an overly sized vocabulary who wants to work low skill jobs and would REALLY like to be alive at the end of the month and will be unlikely to be animate without food, which a job can provide through the application of providing currency.

A lot of jobs won't hire you if they feel you're overqualified and are just trying to get the job to survive rather than to make a career out of it. I was on interview panels where my boss, who had the final say, rejected a bunch of candidates for this reason.

    • @colby1398

Every job I've had except one the interview process ended with the phrase, "Can you start today/tomorrow?" - Until I looked for work related to my BS in Physics, I would walk in and be employed that day in the first place I visited that was actually hiring. I sent out about 50 resumes after graduation and got two calls, leading to one interview for which I was competing with a PhD candidate. - So I quit that idea and got hired at first meet at the first electronics manufacturer I found, and parlayed that into better paying jobs at two other consecutive companies in the same industry. - - - The lessons I learned: 1)A college degree only proves that you can spend a lot of money to prove you can complete something that takes years to do. 2) That degree may have nothing to do with who is hiring, or where you end up working, so be flexible. 3)Knowing all the buzz-words and software means less than being seen as a competent person. 4) Number three in my list applies most when talking to the people who actually do the job your applying for. The cookie-cutter answers are for the HR drones.
