    Uh, when I was a kid (like many decades ago) we had staring into the sun contests which I won. I'm not aware of any damage to my eyes as of now - is that a long term thing that will still come? Or have I been lucky?
    We didn't know better.

    Do sunglasses serve a similar purpose? I mean would it still damage my retinas ?

      Eclipse glasses are much, much, much darker than sunglasses. You can't see anything through them, except something as bright as the sun.

      I keep thinking of that too! But sunglasses aren't made to look AT the sun.
      They're made to look AT the world (so you can see where you're going) despite the glare.
      Whereas eclipse glasses filter the world out so you can safely enjoy the aesthetics of sun-staring.
