Let’s talk about the #1 sign of iodine overload or toxicity. Iodine is a trace mineral, which means you only need it in trace amounts.
You only need about 150 to 200 micrograms of iodine daily. Iodine deficiency is more common than iodine overload, but you should be aware of certain things that could happen if you take too much.
Signs of iodine overload:
1. Energy that prevents sleep
2. Fast pulse rate
3. Atrial fibrillation
4. Heat intolerance
5. Diarrhea
6. Weight loss
7. Hand tremors
8. Temperature increase
9. Bone loss
10. Loss of menstrual cycle
11. Excessive sweating
12. Thyroid storm
If you have symptoms of too much iodine, it is essential to identify where it’s coming from and eliminate excess iodine from your diet.
Iodine overload could be caused by consuming an excess of certain things, including:
• Sea kelp or seaweed
• Iodized salt
• Seafood
• A combination of supplements (check your supplement labels and find out how much iodine you’re really getting)
• Bakery goods
Try a urine test to find out if you have iodine overload.

I was on synthetic thyroid medication for 25 years. After seeing an interview with Dr. Brownstein and reading his book on iodine, I started supplementing with 25mg of iodine, then went off medication. After 3 months, my thyroid output of T3 and T4 were back in the normal range. I asked my doctor why they didn't recommend testing for iodine deficiency or using iodine supplementation before putting people on synthetic thyroid hormone. He smiled and said it was a good question.
25 mg or 0,25 mg?
@@davidpickett6272 25 mg. I'm now down to 12.5 mg, but thinking of going back up. I find it also makes my mind seem sharper.
@@davidpickett6272 If he is talking about Dr Brownstein, he will be referring to 25mg.
@@davidpickett6272 - based on my experience, I would say 25 mg of Lugol's Iodine is a good daily dose if you are otherwise healthy, but more if you are trying to push out bromine and fluoride. Lugol's iodine is powerful detoxifier.
Here is the amount of iodine contained in a drop of Lugol's iodine based on potency:
2% 2.50 mg per drop
3% = 3.75 mg per drop
5% = 6.25 mg per drop
7% = 8.75 mg per drop
10% = 12.50 mg per drop
15% = 18.75 mg per drop
Did u take other supplements??
I'm going to have to stick with Dr. David Brownstein's advice on this issue. 150 mcg of Iodine was never determined to be an optimal amount to take... rather, it was determined to be the *minimum* amount to reduce the incidence of goiters in the central US when that was a huge problem. These days we have *unlabeled* bromine added to flour products, bromine used in car upholstery, carpeting, furniture, bedding and more products. Bromine also blocks iodine receptors... so if 150 mcg of Iodine was barely acceptable back then, the need for it can only be greater these days. Lugol figured all of this out in the early 1800s.
Agree... I lived in Tanzania during my childhood and used to wonder why people had swollen neck practically resulting from enlarged thyroid gland resulting to goitre... Thanks to all of you and Dr. Berg for spreading this important awareness!
Most people have deficiency rather than abundance of iodine.
Hashimotos was triggered in many developing countries when iodide was added to salt.
@@bronsonstone725 I've bought lugols iodine 5%, and have been trying to take 4 drops a day in a 200ml glass of water. The problem is, I'm using my tap water and don't have a filter or water distiller. Will be getting one soon and will have lugols iodine daily.
@@davidtrindle6473 Does that imply that genes mutated to require iodine/ide and develop goiter, etc if not taken- whereas before iodine/ide was concentrated/introduced to human body, goiter/thyroid issues didn't exist?
Having read Dr David Brownstein’s book and had recommendations from two well-known doctors who recommended to start with 1 drop of Lugols Iodine daily, ie 6.5mg, I have followed their advice and slowly increased the dose to 18mg daily. I have been on this dose for 15 years! I am 66 and have no illnesses, hardly ever get a flu, am fit and well. H.W.
What strength of Lugols do you take , 5%, 15% ?
@@kobalt77 I always use 5% - 2 drops per day, but use intermittently now, with a few months off and a few months on. Do a medicine dose when I have an infection - 2 drops, 3 times a day for two days. Usually knocks any infection on the head.
@@jacthomson1559 What a wonderful reply, greatly appreciated !!!
Amazing how they put bromine in everything while removing the Iodine, sounds just like another tin foil hat conspiracy.
I agree! After reading Dr. Brownstein's book, I started taking 25 mg of iodine/iodide (RLC Labs iThroid capsules twice per day) a few months ago. My body temperature increased from the upper 96 F level to the mid/upper 98 F level, and I've been able to stop taking my thyroid medication (levothyroxine) after being on it for over 10 years. My most recent labs showed that my free T3 and T4 hormones are in the normal range, my body temerature has consistently stayed in the upper normal range, and I feel great overall (I also take daily: selenium, magnesium, vitamin C, D-3, zinc, and use Real Salt liberally)! The notion of iodine toxicity is seriously overhyped - anyone with normally functioning kidneys will simply excrete any excess iodine that the cells of your body cannot utilize.
I moved to Germany and found out the ground is very deficient in Iodine. Taking iodine now and feeling good
. . . as you should.
Taking six drops of iodine in water for a period of six weeks along with selenium helped me reverse my reynaulds syndrome. Iodine is essential for anyone with or without a thyroid. While six drops in water is considered a high dose, it's worth considering that doctors used to prescribe iodine in much higher doses before the pharmaceutical industry intervened.
6 drops of lugols in one glass of water taken at once? Every day? Is the selenium also liquid? How many drops?
Thank You Theapotpixie!
Great point!
@@keylanoslokj1806 pay attention to concentration of Lugol Solution. Six drop might be too high for normal or alternate use. On internet, calculation of Iodine from Lugol is available.
@Google RR I suppose that depends on your dreams 😊
Dr David Brownstein in his book “Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It” talks about the side effects as being a result of bromine being released from receptor sites that iodine competes for. Bromide/bromide being added to things like bread to preserve it. Also used as an alternative to chlorine in pools. The bromine being released has to happen at a gradual and slow rate as it can create a crisis. If what Dr Berg said here was true, a good majority of the Japanese population would be suffering from too much Iodine. Is that true? It seems that their health is optimal compared to Americans. They typically eat a diet high in fish and seaweed.
I follow Dr Brownstein protocol and improved greatly...
Totally agree with you, brominde/bromine is one issue to be regarded..

Maybe the Japanese have low selenium levels. The thyroid has more selenium than anywhere in the body which is used to stop excess TPO/H2O2 oxidation process. It seems there is a strong push to scare people about iodine. Just like D3.
@MrBrianDuga, the recipe listed below in this comment is the one on how to help with bromide detoxing. ( removing the bromide is so important, and it takes a while to clear the body of bromide rashes and bromide acne and bromide smell as it is released. Bromide translates to the word stench. These things show the bromide clearing. The recipe below also helps with fatigue and low mood while detoxing.) Use the recipe below to clear bromide so then the iodine can rightly go to that receptor that the bromide was occupying wrongly. Once bromide is detached from the receptor, iodine takes back its own receptor back and also chases after the bromide untill it clears out of our system through urination and sweating etc.) Recipe, to detox the bromide; drink a solution of salt, brand name, 'Real Salt' 1/4 teaspoon, with 1/2 cup filtered water, immediately following that, drink 12oz. to 16oz. of filtered water. This helps clear our bodies of bromide and it's detox symptoms. It can be used often. Salt water also helps to detox the fluoride, which needs to be released from the chloride receptor. This process allows the salt(sodium chloride) chloride can then reclaim the receptor the fluoride was blocking. We need salt for many things, we need iodine for many things. Iodine and salt help with clearing the breasts of dense fibroid tissue condition. This healing of the breast tissue seems miraculous to me, as the tissue then feels truly soft, wonderful and the breast discomfort is gone.
Iodine over load is rare, the bakery goods don't have Potassium Iodide anymore, they replaced it with the horrible Potassium Bromate.

Well, we got to find out why some taking iodine supplements or living in an iodine rich country like Japan, are experiencing hyperthyroid issues like heat intolerance and palpitations, etc, but medical tests show normal. But the hyperthyroid symptoms only come with increase of iodine in some form. Maybe a co-factor nutrient like selenium is missing? Testing selenium (while decreasing iodine-rich seafood and seaweed in Japanese meals) so too early for me to say. Re: Doctors say no long subclinical hypothyroid but normal. Also at menopause which for some seem to bring these thyroid swings BUT for sure it seems linked with increased iodine.
It might not be so rare, rather unnoticed.
I developed a severe case of sleep deprivation, like down to 2 to 3 hours a night. In 2008, I went to a naturopath in LA, and through kinesiology, he said I needed iodine. Just that night, I slept 6 hours straight from being exposed to the iodine in his test. That's the first time I'd had that much sleep in years.
I've been taking liquid iodine ever since. The bottle says 2 drops are a normal dose and 226mcg. I've always taken 6 drops daily.
I have goiter from malnutrition as a child in Europe. Goiter is why they put iodine in table salt. It was common even here in the US at one time.
I've had no side effects from taking triple the recommended dose.
Wow, thanks for sharing ❤
I take 50 mg per day with no issue. That about 20 drops of the liquid Lugols iodine.
@lizzyjeanne I don't think you need near that much. Although I have not heard of any side effects, I'd be a little more conservative with it.
The most I've ever taken is six drops. Taking four or five seems to be adequate.
@@wernerdanler2742 it works for me. If you read dr Brownstein’s: Iodine, Why You Need It… and Linda Farrow’s The Iodine crisis, you’ll see that many people take much more than that. Your body eliminates what it can’t use. But if it needs it, then not taking enough doesn’t help. It can take very high doses to dislodge the Bromine and fluoride that are attached to the Iodine receptor and make room for the iodine to bind. So if you are taking a small amount, then the iodine probably can’t even get to the receptors.
I have a serious case of insomnia
I need help,doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong

I would start with balancing B vitamins, and electrolytes first if I wasn't taking any iodine supplements. I think that low electrolytes are a much more common problem for most people, especially when potassium is limited in its strength. B vitamins are also low for many people and are so important for our health. Taking a liquid B complex on a daily basis made major improvements in my health.
Me too! Bs and electrolytes, esp B1!
For me too, enough potassium has made the biggest improvement in my life. Then b1, then vitamin d, all from Dr Berg.
@@experimenthealthyketo83 in what form did you take potassium?

Breads haven't had iodine added for years - they now use bromides. I have Hashimotos and find Dr. Brownstein's book and Lynne Farrow's book "The Iodine Crisis" much more informative. I have taken up to 200 milligrams a day (when I had covid). My normal amount is between 50mg and 100mg/day and have never felt better. The books will explain the detox symptoms and the supplements needed.
So does albuterol and dozens of other foods and meds. All intentional to cripple the republic and every metabolic process. Oh, I forgot brominated vegetable oils.
Some wonder why this country has fallen so far, start with the FDA and CDC, and you might have a clue if we survive the coming Winter.
Sodium Iodide was at one time used for infections, now it's reserved for our pets. The Only problem with the Iodine halogen might be its efficacy, and concentrations.
Better to wait for the Iodine to purify the water or heat it instead of Chlorine. Initially their reasoning was the lighter atom traveled through some of the waterborne parasitic cyst shells quicker.
I use similar dosages, never had any problem.

I was combining kelp supplement and another vitamin for hair loss which in itself has 225mcg. And I had just taken them when I run into this video! I think that was by divine intervention. Thank you Dr Berg.
Apparently the average person in Japan eats 10,000 to 15,000mcg daily so I HIGHLY doubt you taking that miniscule amount would be doing anything negative. I will be taking at least 3000mcg daily from now on too see how that goes.
Michael Friëdman, ND: So what would your protocol be if someone was low on iodine?
Thyroid Expert David Brownstein, MD: Generally, I start most patients with 25,000 mcg a day and adjust it as needed. If they have endocrine disease, such as breast, prostate, pancreas, or thyroid, sometimes I’ll start with more.
MF: And when you’re giving 25 mg a day, how do you assess when to stop?
DB: Well, we need iodine on a daily basis. The body doesn’t have much of iodine stored, so if you stop taking it, you’ll go back to deficiency stage very quickly.
MF: So most of your patients on it are on indefinitely, then?
DB: Yes, most are on 25 mg, I would say, in my practice.

Funny you should say that.
Adele Davis mentioned using tincture of iodine if you could not get other iodine supplements in one of her books. I tried it a couple of times, and it's nasty. Yuk!

I also feel like hypothyroid issues seem to get much more attention, and people always think that hypo is the only thyroid problem a person can have. I tell you firsts hand, hyperthyroid symptoms are awful. And all the iodine the internet promotes did me a huge disservice. **EDIT** I want to add, I am at this point very close to the normal range of thyroid function. When a person starts on iodine they begin to remove toxins from the cells into the bloodstream and if this is faster than the kidneys can remove those toxins they can cause unwanted symptoms so if that happens it is better to reduce the dose and then pulse start slowly increasing. 200mcg BTW could hardly do much at all! But iodine itself certainly wouldn't produce those symptoms. Every cell in the body needs iodine and vitamin D.
Hello Dr this sounds like Graves’ disease/ hyperthyroidism too. Please do more videos about this disease 🙏🏻
Good video. Thank you.
I'm glad it helped you!
Hello Dr Berg good morning how are you? Thankyou for sharingyour knowledge and videos with us! God bless!
I've been taking iodine for a while! My hair, age 62 is unbelievable, thick, and healthy
Very interesting thanks
Most welcome
Doctor Thank you very much !!!!
You're most welcome!
Hi Dr Berg how much is too much ?
Dear Dr Berg, Thank you for the incredibly impactful education you are publishing. Should you have time, could you comment on establishing the right level of iodine, when from food alone it is not sufficient, but with sea kelp tablets, the symptoms of iodine excess develop (heart-related, in particular)? Sea kelp tablets are invaluable in managing the female cycle well without excruciating pain and the need for painkillers, and yet once these symptoms start to pop up, it is scary to keep taking them, so the question is, what to do so as to get it right and not risk long term issues one way or the other. Thank you so much, please keep up the amazing work!
Possibly, some of his videos on hormones and on female periods cycles could help ❤
so glad I saw this I started taking iodine daily and now I know ty
Dr. I r. amaging lnformation you have
I have been taking 11 milligrams, not micrograms, of iodine (as Lugol's solution) every day for ten years and have no ill effects. I also make sure to get selenium and the substances required to make glutathione and have done that for more then thirty years. So 'too much' iodine must depend on factors other than simply eating a lot of iodine. (Before ten years ago, I got about 3 milligrams of iodine every day starting in the early 1980s.)
I have continued taking the higher dose because the effect it has on my health is unambiguously good.
I’m gonna start on on the solution too 2% with just 1 drop a day for now. See how I feel. When did you feel the need to increase your dose to several drops? What type of selenium brand do you use, it’s the 200mcg (micrograms) right?
How I wished I've known this information long time ago, I will not let my doctor remove my thyroid, now I have to take levothyroxine for the rest of my life. Thank you so much for this information doc. God bless.♥️
I got hyperthyroidism about 15 years ago . The doctor gave me 2 options : medication or surgery to remove thyroid gland and have to use drug through life .drug cures about 21% . So I chose drug , if drug wont’t be effective , then I would have surgery .
After using it , I recovered . No need removing thyroid gland . .
The only sign I had is my eyes looks strange , my brother told me and I went to see the specialist and discovered I got hyperthyroidism
All removed? :-(
Thanks a lot. God bless you. But how to aquire the book here in Ghana.
Wow. My sister and step daughter has Hashimotos
Possibly some of his earlier videos on hashimoto may help ❤
I have numerous overlapping autoimmune health challenges, including genetic EDS. I also have Hashimotos Thyroiditis. In 2009, I had a thyroid storm that almost killed me. It wasn't due to iodine. Rather, my immune system briefly stopped attacking my thyroid and unbeknownst to me, started working on it's own. Meaning without me knowing it, my thyroid meds were then too high a dose, and actually became an overdose. Very scary. Had a cardioversion, but have had AFib/heart issues ever since.
So sorry you had this experience! I started taking more CoQ10 and having a lot less issues with both heart and thyroid. I have Grave's Disease and now as I age, it seems I have the low thyroid problems more often. It's difficult to balance, and all my doctors ever did was make things worse. Gotta listen to your body and write these symptoms down, even then... loss of sleep, dry skin or moist skin, etc., and I never take one supplement every day. I skip around and seem to do better that way. I do like this advice from Dr. Berg.
Oh my God! This exact thing just happened to me in Sept!!! Who did you see and what tests did you get to determine? I had 2 cardio versions since and in continuous afib.
i had something wrong medications overdosed me have to be so so careful I'm low pth but how they never found out i do not really know all the bloods they had over the years and operations
Ok! Possibly, some of his videos on afib may help ❤
How did you treat your Hashimotos please??
I love the fact that Dr. Berg explains everything in an understandable way. I added another of Dr bergs supplements to my list ( I only buy my vitamins from Dr Berg ) I added the the estrogen balance and like magic I didn't wake up sweating from hot flashes and my moods are more stable. I'm in the menapause before the actual menapause ,( I think it's called parimenapause)
Dr thanks for the knowledge knowledge
Glad you found it helpful!
I have hachimo and also my sister .we ate very much gluten in the past but iodine ...never think about it
Micrograms not milligrams ❤
Thank you Dr. Berg ⭐
I am taking 50 mg per Day. And IT IS not too much read book The iodine Crisis.
I think the problem is when you get iodine and u don't have enough Sellino the iodine go to another place in the body,
@@saraafify7092 for me iodine Works for perfect.
@@saraafify7092 what is sellino? Do you mean selenium?
@@saraafify7092 all our body parts needs iodine not only thyroid. ;)
@@EijaBerg5362 yes exactly
Thank you Dr.
You're most welcome.
Sounds more like hyperthyroidism symptoms than iodine toxicity. My understanding is your body takes what it needs and the rest is excreted. A lot of organs in the body use iodine, not just the thyroid. That RDA is mainly related to thyroid , not with regards to how much the BODY needs or uses. Perhaps you need to do a little more research? Granted you need selenium whether you have a lot iodine intake or not. T
Hashimoto can also occur without high iodine intake. It’s an autoimmune condition
I have been taking lugo's solution for years now and have not had any issues. Must add ever since I have been taking it I have not gotten the flu or a cold or even covid symtoms. Every cell in your body needs Iodine, and my understanding as well, what ever your body needs in takes in and excretes what is not needed.
Totally agree with you
Hashimoto's also very strongly correlated with Lyme disease. I have both.
Great Info!
Glad you found it helpful!
I think a lot of folks with low iodine are taking this personally. Don't. I also have felt amazing when I started taking iodine, but if you feel great, this video is likely not for you! However, if you are taking iodine, it's nice to know what the symptoms are if you do start having issues so you can start testing and figuring things out. I do disagree with the requirements, but I also think that is directed at people who have normal levels and are not showing any symptoms. Just my thoughts.
I felt great my Dr told me not to take it 😭 ths 0
Dr. Ken Berry said you can take 1-3 mg iiodibe. 150 mcg is not enough. Conflicting advice.
Very interesting 😮
Thanks for watching!

Hashi patient here. Add chest rash to the list. Got a bad one when I took an iodine supplement. Thank you for your amazing content.
Yup I have most of the 12 symptoms and chest rash too. I wonder how much iodine comes with coffee or energy drinks, because those are my two "vices".
That's bromine detoxing out of you.
@@wtfronsson wow dude there's no iodine in that, there's actually bromine, which pushes out iodine... check out dr brownstein
Is the rash accompanied by itch or discoloration or both? Persistent or occasional?
Ya same here , I have noticed the red rashes sometimes with or without the itch( I’ve a lymph nodes)
Dr Berg, is there a difference between Vitamin D and Vitamin D3. You always recommend Vitamin D, what’s the difference? Thank you for your information. I love your videos, very useful and excellent health information. God bless you.
THANK U SO MUCH DR FOR EXPLAINING ABOUT HYPERTHYROID IN DETAIL BLESS U🎉
Very glad to be of help.
reference: "The Iodine Crisis" - iodine is truly a misunderstood mineral; also reference Dr Brownstein's iodine book.... it's not accurate that it causes thyroid dysfunction; keep reading please
This is mindblowing! I have graves disease and have been 98% better from vitamin D and B1. No swedish doctors but one knew bout this...ONE in all of my town. Is Dr Berg a genious I wonder or does he just have the right education?
Genius for sure! ❤
Hi I have Graves Disease too. Do you know how much iodine you consume in your regular diet?
@@Charlie_Ses Yes, none. I've reduced it in my salt so there should be only small small amounts left since iodine triggers Graves. I also dont eat dairy or gluten.
@@Vixinaful Ok thanks, that's good to hear. I just reduced my iodine intake in my diet after 8 years of having an overactive thyroid, and my blood results have improve massively. It's incredible that diet can play such a big part in thyroid health. Good luck.
i think he just stays curious, whereas others think they know enough.
Thank you!
You're very welcome!
I was iodine deficient and started taking iodoral, 12.5mg a day. It healed my thyroid. I function very well on that dose and if I stop taking it, I notice within a couple of weeks.
