Dude you just missed the Shakrain, it's a Kite fest in old Dhaka. The fest has been celebrated for hundreds of years. As you probably know old Dhaka plays a very important role in bengali tradition, Shakrain is such a part of old bengali tradition. During the day Kite flying and fight are on focus, while during the evening fireworks and the air lighted balloons are the main attraction. After this all city turns literally into a open nightclub, dj parties in every roof, music good atmosphere etc. You should have been participating. By the way good luck for your journey to Bangladesh.
I didn't really miss Shakrain. 😄 I was in Old Dhaka the entire day while kites were being flown from every rooftop around me. The last shots and time lapses that I got of Ruplal House were taken from the roof of a building across the road where they had a big roof party going on with a DJ and lights and club music. It was interesting to walk back to my hotel. Every rooftop seemed to have a party going on, and thousands of young people in their best nightclub clothes were pouring into Old Dhaka. 😎 There was a real party atmosphere despite the massive traffic jams it created. I knew I should go back to that area later that night when it got fully dark, but I was exhausted. It was a struggle just to get back to my hotel during that rush hour traffic. To go back to the riverfront area would have killed me, I think. And I was flying out of Bangladesh the following day. So I didn't have the energy. I just watched the videos of the celebration on Facebook the next day.
@@PlanetDoug I see. I can understand, I may have done the same thing. Anyway thanks for visiting Bangladesh, I hope our complicated and bad bureaucracy didn't ruin your journey. Bangladesh has way to go, but we are trying. Hope one day you will back to Bangladesh for visiting also the countryside and other interesting things, until then have nice time and good luck. If any bad things happened to you in Bangladesh, I'm apologising for my people.
@@maxmahabur9521 I had a great time on my visit to Bangladesh. It would have been nice to have more time. But that's my fault. I do things very slowly, and I stayed in Dhaka for a long time. There was so much for me to do there. But I needed more time so I could take a launch on the river to Barisal and do other trips like that. Maybe I can come back and do that soon. 👍
At first, I had no idea what was going on. I didn't know why so many people were flying kites. But later on, I learned that it was the kite festival. I went to a building rooftop nearby, and they had a DJ there playing loud music and they had a light show. I had no idea that kites were so popular in Bangladesh. 😄
Hello there :) pay a visit to the famous Ahsan Manzil Palace, its in old dhaka as well, not so far from where you are in this video, I think you will like it.
I saw Ahsan Manzil Palace from the outside a few times. I walked it past many times as I went to the Buriganga River. But I didn't go inside. They have a policy that foreign visitors have to pay 25X more than other people. Plus, they would not let me bring my camera inside. So I didn't buy a ticket. I had such a good experience exploring Ruplal House, though, so it's okay. 👍
@@PlanetDoug yes you cant photograph, video inside Ahsan Mazail Museum. But its still worth the experience to check it out inside the museum, its got many old artifacts from the british colonial era and interesting things to see..you have to pay 200tk as a foriegner to enter the museum part. The gardens are free for taking pics and videos though...greetings from Old Dhaka :) find me on instagram; "explorer_ronald"..I have been following all your vlogs ever since your visit here..
@@sashaeyez Thanks for following my vlogs. I appreciate it. When I went to Ahsan Manzil, it wasn't just the museum that was restricted for photography. They wouldn't let me take pictures or video outside in the gardens either. They said I had to leave my camera and my bag at the front, and I didn't want to do that. I can't risk losing everything in my bag. Plus, the price has gone up. It isn't 200 taka for foreigners anymore. It's 500 taka now. And I think that is too much. Personally, I think it should be the same price for everyone. But 500 taka is 25 times higher than the local price. That's a bit crazy. And without my camera, it wasn't worth it to me. Besides, the Ruplal House was such a great experience, I didn't mind missing the Pink Palace. 😄😄
You’re very courageous to go in! I wouldn’t go inside this house. Looking at the stairs ....i would freak out. As a bengali, i got a visa free for 10 years for Bangladesh because Canadian needs one. Can you extend your trip after 7 days?
At first, I thought the stairs were not strong enough to hold me, but, as I said in the video, I saw a some boys going up and down, and the stairs didn't shake or move. So I thought I would take the risk. 😃 Unfortunately, no, I can't extend my visa beyond the 7 days. I had to fly out of Bangladesh. I thought about flying out of Bangladesh and then flying back again right away and getting a new visa, but I don't know if immigration would even let me do that. It was difficult to get into Bangladesh the first time. If I came back a second time right away, I don't think I could get a visa.
You have done a great job. You give us lot of information about old city Dhaka. We should know as a Bangladeshi .Thanks for visiting Old Dhaka.

The Cycling Canadian i just hope you come back and explore our country. I learn about new spot in my own country.
I'm thinking about it. There are definitely lots of places I want to visit - like Barisal, Sylhet, and Chittagong. We'll see. 👍
Bangladesh was Bengal kingdom. west Bengal India was part of Bangladesh before. Bangladesh wasn't part of India
No.
There was no such thing as Bangladesh in the colonial era. British Raj (Indian Empire) consisted of many presidencies including Bengal presidency.
