Somali rice is NOT called Biryani. It is called Bariis. Some people say it Biryani because it reminds them of Indian food but Somali Bariis is much different.

Looool Somalis traditionally drink mango juice with our food since we have mangos in Somalia also the spaghetti is from Italian influence but we make it in our own way, the banana thing is because in our country it’s the largest export.

I’m our house traditional drinks are mainly natural drinks made from yogurt usually with mango, there’s watermelon juice, there’s avocado juice which is made up of pineapple, pears and avocado.

A lot of East African food was influenced by the Arab/Asian merchants
Actually it was the Somali merchants that travelled around the world giving our spices, distributing coffee and Frankensens (spelling) also the spices is our own it wasn’t influenced by the Indians but quiet similar.

Few clarifications, which I'd hoped the Somali restaurant you went to educated you guys on. Not not your fault
Sabayaad not chapati
Sambuus not samosa
Bariis not biryani.
All of those are Asian name and dishes and our food is totally different.
Pasta/spaghetti dish is due to Italian colonisation. We have inherited many Italian dishes and incorporated into our own way and spices.
Mashed potato isn't really a dish in authentic dish (anyone correct me here) but we have something called Soor which is mashed maze. It is has same colour and texture of American Gritz (if you know what that is) and it is eaten with spinach and with meat. I'm assuming they use mashed potato as su substitute but if I'm wrong on here, anyone correct me please.
The banana thing, I don't get the fascination of it by non Somalis. It is stable for Somalis to eat either with rice or pasta dishes. It provides nice contrast to flavour, which usually is heavy on meat. Not you guys but i see many others in other videos laugh about it. It is a Somali thing and I don't think it is so out of character. Some South East Asians colour fry their banana and earth with their main meal. You have Americans who put pineapple on their pizza. I don't judge or mock.
Shaani is NOT a Somali made drink but seems to be favourites among some Somalis in some western countries. We do have our own drinks made out of mango, lemon, etc.
I'm sorry, the place you guys went to doesn't appear to be of high standard. You've got to remember some Somali cafés sell full meal but cater to labourers who only value quantities rather than quality. If you went to some proper Somali restaurants, I think they would have given you more variety and most importantly, educated you on what the dishes are pr their history.
All in all, enjoyed your video, thumbs up and please do more react videos but hopefully have/invite a Somali advisor who can add context to the good or history.
Lastly, thank you for correcting it. It is SOMALI not somalian. Your Somali friends appear not to care but it is important to state the right term.
