Obviously he is not just Indian, but something like Indian American makes sense imo. His children are Americanized and they should just be called Americans.

Actually, they are fighting over the exclusive economic zone that rock is surrounded by. 200 nautical miles in every direction where whichever country has a flag on that tiny rock controlled by that country. Pretty big deal if it's far north where the ice is melting away opening up new shipping lanes.
Also, since it's one solid rock, one could make it into a super-port for mooring ships to in wait of weather or ice flows etc to pass. So it's a win win really as there's money to be made from that rock and any water around it.
That's also before you consider the possibility of there being oil in those waters. And lots and lots of FISH.
