You can get a 12 speed shimano mech/shifter, and still use your HG freehub. 12 sp deore works perfect with sunrace 12 sp 11-50 cassette. Granted, your smallest cog is slightly larger, but you'll still have way more range, than any 11 sp system without expanders. Box 9sp (possibly their other systems too, but not sure) goes on HG freehub - 11-50 range as well.

According to Geardrive: Shimano derailleurs require a longer B-tension screw, you will need to adjust your b-tension screw to allow your derailleur cage to correctly clear the largest sprockets.

HG for sure will still be a preferable choice imo. I can't see anyone uses that 9 or 10 teeth cog that often. Aftermarket cassettes for shimano, Sram NX and box do still use HG freehub body for a still wide range drivetrain

    • @finroddd
      @finroddd Рік тому

yeah, I need 51 teeth cog much, much more than the 10 teeth cog. So the Deore groupset with 11 gears, HG compatible cassette and 11-51 range is quite good, durable, not expensive and is probably the best solution.

Recently had to remove a stuck cassette from an HG freehub body that had those worn notches. If you take a two chain whips, you can use one as an anchor and the other to turn the stuck cogs counter-clockwise slightly in order to back them out from the worn notches. I've used regular ol' bike chains in a pinch if you don't have one or two chain whips. Just an alternate method if you don't like taking a hammer or mallet to things.

I went SramNo AXS on my latest build simply because of cassette cost. The cheapest GX cassette was $175 whereas I was able to find XT 10-51 for $102. I like the simplicity of the one piece design, but it does cost more.

Been running 11 speed XT for a few years. Plenty of range and works good but I need a new crank now and they are all gone. Cheapest way to move to 12 speed is to buy new microspline drive shell for wheel I have. Going that route is still going to be $625,00. Really ticks me off I cant get 11 speed cranks anymore.

  • @vlbz

XD is no good. The smallest sprocket gets worn and now you have to throw away the whole cassette. With microspline you can just replace the smallest sprockets and ride forever. Larger sprockets never get too worn basically. In my experience.

Whenever I replace my cassettes due to wear, they are worn at larger sprockets and never due to small sprocket issues. Even with Hg hard to find just the bigger spockets to be changed and not cost effective. I guess if I am biking flat areas, i would use small sprockets more.

Yeah HG is used by both Shimano and SRAM, but only on certain models. For example the SX and NX drivetrains use HG freehub cassettes, as does SRAM Rival and I think Force as well on the Road/gravel side. I'm not sure what Shimano uses HG with these days, probably some 11 or 10 speed stuff.

XD drive is a superior technology at the expense of cassette design challenges.
Can’t wait for the videos covering bikes’ wonderful standards:
    1) Hub sizing
    2) BB sizing
    3) Headset sizing
    4) Crank sizing
    5) Seat tube sizing
    6) Handlebar sizing
    7) Derailleur / chain / cassette / chainring sizing
    8) Rim /tire sizing
    9) Shock sizing
    10) Brake rotor sizing
    11) Brake pad sizing
I toy with the idea of quitting bikes for several years to let the industry sort itself out. Building a MTB from the ground up is incredibly frustrating. Assembly tools, all of the “standards”, fitment/spacing, servicing tools etc. I don’t know how bike shops stay sane.
