Shimano build quality really is on another level, even Deore is amazing for the money with not much sacrifice in fit and finish
if you like to attach anchors to your bike .... :/
@@razorree It's fun when you ride a heavy bike, then go ride the carbon one, and feel like you're going to rip the crank off and you're not even trying. Way more fun than going to the gym.
Nah, i've seen people complaining a play in M5100 cassette. The pin that connect big cog and spider arm become loose, the rattle kinda annoying
Deore is pure bargain and it is hands down thee best non high end option (I'd mix it with SLX crank and XT shifter though). On the other hand high end X01/XX1 eagle are the most durable drivetrains on the market. tldr best drivetrains:
Deore - mid range
X01/XX1 - high end
You tho k their quality now? You should’ve seen their stuff 2 decades ago. Their deore groupsets of old are better of XT stuff today.
It’s not even close.
microSHIFT AdventX is to thank for this. Thank goodness there are more durable, low cost options coming. microSHIFT AdventX is amazing for durability and quick shifting. I bet the Ride Alongside channel will compare AdventX to LinkGuide in the coming months. That channel has videos on AdventX comparisons to other drivetrains and durability reviews after 800mi or something. Thanks for this intro Doddy and crew!
Microshit you mean.
Downsides:
- weak derailleur clutch
- cassette range at maximum 48T cog
- not compatible with Shimano shifters
Pretty good drivetrain but it's definitely far from perfect
@@ptptpt5079the advent/advantnX clutch does suck
Acyolte is the one to mate to the groupsets
Though their new sword is suppose to be the improved version of trb advant/X clutch.
They all can be funed to work with Shimano
Nice info, I work in a bikeshop and it's good to know the exact differences between shimanos families. It seems to me as a very nice product for ebikes. Cheaper shimano stuff will force sram to tame down their prices.
Best introduction for this new systems, thank you ! Now, you know what would be a great idea? Get 2 identical EMTB's with XT gearing, one on HG the other one on LG and test ride them back to back. I'd like too hear some ride impressions. How much smoother LG shifts under load? Is it noticeably slower? Is the weight noticeable? Is 11 speed vs. 12 speed a big drawback? How about the gearing range? C'mon Doddy, pretty sure you dig this stuff as much I do!
Link Glide seems like a great option if your bike came with that drivetrain, but to throw away my HG derailleur and shifter to convert to Link Glide doesn't make much sense....even if the chains and cassettes last longer, it would be a long time before I'd break even, think I'll just stick with what I've got
I imagine the cassette and chain might work fine with the existing 11sp setups
@@BOMEISTER2000 I'm 2 years late but just want to say that it doesn't work
@@talldude8155 What do you mean it doesn't work?
@@thewarwithyourself-hx5qx bro, I have no idea why I said this lmao
@@talldude8155 I guess thats good enough. My bike has HG and it slips and skips this set up looks like it might solve the problem as SRAM is just too $$$ for me.
Just had a full linkglide set (10sp) plus spare chain and cassette delivered from Germany, doesn't feel super heavy compared to the box e-bike stuff, hopefully I'll make it over 1000 miles in this winter season! Took a gamble obviously, as there are noreviews, but the price was compelling as are the potential longevity gains. :-)
Can you give as a review? Cheers
@@joeee60 I've got 713 UK winter miles on the deore linkglide now with 0.5 wear on the park chainwear tool. Shifting is fairly heavy if had to criticize something. Not 3X the life yet, but pretty good.
Oh man! New lenses? New lights? New camera? This episode looks amazing!
You just got to love Shimano drivetrains. They have everything. Expensive and amazing, cheap and still really good, now super durable. The value is unbeatable.
Questions: I guess the chain does not really „wear slower“ because the sizes of the parts are the same as on 11-speed Hyperglide. But do they say that you can use your chain longer like the 1% wear we hab with 9-speed instead of the 0.5% with 12-speed?
Retro question: What was the difference with 8-speed IG?
Interglide was Shimano's first cassette ramp design to allow the chain to move more cleanly from big to small sprockets, but GMBN has forgotten completely about this for some reason (And it's not like they weren't reminded in the comments on previous videos where they made exactly the same omission). As for the chain, possibly what Shimano are doing is making the old 10 and 11 speed chains but with 12 speed chain materials, since that technology wasn't ready for mass production when 10 and 11 speed came out, and even though they are narrower and lighter, 12 speed chains are not less durable than 10 and 11 speed, some testing shows them to be more durable.
Not using a 10 speed top gear makes a huge difference to the likelihood of the chain skipping, especially on 1x drivetrains where riders will spend a lot of time in this gear - good engineering practice for industrial chain drives sets a lower limit at 11 teeth for the sprocket size.
Great episode!!
BUT WHERE CAN I FIND THE 11 SP 11-50T CASSETTE!?!
I have managed to buy the shifter and the rear der. here in Sweden, and I found the chain on an Italian site, but the cassette just doesn't exist anywhere in the world, it seems. Covid has indeed messed up even the bike world...
I really would like to replace the SRAM SX-junk on my Haibike Nduro 5 with the Linkglide system - as soon as possible!
Any ideas? Anyone? Please...
/Ulf @ BIKE BUMS
All well and good but for ebikes surely the way forward is integrated motor and gearbox. All gears sealed against dirt. Rear drive can be belt.
Totally. If you have a motor, who cares about a tiny additional drivetrain loss.
@@LongPeter totally compensated for by massive reduction in maintenance requirements and replacement parts costs
10 Speed LG is very affordable, a real gift to us from Shimano.
All new E-bikes comes with 12 speed microspline hubs...
Shimano: LETS GO MAKE A DEDICATED E- BIKE DRIVE TRAIN .OH AND MAKE IT 11 SPEED WITH OLD STYLE HUBS, SO PEOPLE WHO WANTS IT, HAWE TO BUY A WHOLE NEW WHEEL TOO!!! NICE ONE shimano...
In modern wheels you can just change the freehub body. There is no need to change entire wheel
This groupset is thought out for future ebikes (no top level ones since those will come with 12 speeds)
@@moozeex1 cues is meant for low and mid range bikes, those same bikes barley have HG hubs lol
Shimano recommends the LG500 chain for the Cues group. But it also allows the use of HG 11s chain (even if you use 10s). Can I use an HG 11s chain with an HG 10s cassette?
My friend got cues rd and shifter but his cassette and chain still HG.. seems working fine atm he said.
At the moment I have 12-speed Shimano stuff. On eBike these parts really wear out quickly.
Also I’ve realized I do not need 12 speed. My wife has 10s Cues and it’s smooth!
I’m planning to build pretty much bomb proof bike:
- DT Swiss 350 Hybrid rearhub
- 10s Linkglide Cues drive train
Should last…
That 10s is absolutely amazing looking for ebikes! I’ll be getting that once my slx gives up!
After only getting 765 miles out of the Box 4 ebike groupset before it was trashed (tried a chain change at 0.75 wear but lots of slipping), I've ordered a full setup with extra chains and cassettes. I'm on an ebike, so I expected a bit more wear, bit less than 1000 miles seems crap for a supposedly ebike specific 8 speed setup. Linkglide price seems very attractive and being Shimano probably easier to get hold of. If they can increase the lifetime of the components, it's a win for me. As an aside, the box 4 derailleur also has significant play on the pivot, so I'm not likely to go back to them even if linkglide is a bust. Never had anything other than jockey wheels wear out on Shimano/SRAM.
@@briangdd I’ve got the SLX group set on my ebike and I’ve just done 1000 miles on it with one chain replacement and it’s still going strong. They’re saying the link glide should last X3 longer so in theory, 3000+ miles on link glide!? I can’t wait to try it but at this rate, I’ll have the SLX for a couple years yet! 😂

'The rear derailleurs, shifters and cassettes are not cross-compatible with Hyperglide because they use different gear pitches.'
That's from a Shimano press release. Was it mentioned in the video here...?
8:56 - "because the pitch is slightly different"
That said, I'd like to know more about this. I've got an older XT 11-speed shifter, derailleur, and cassette. Might want to get a new Linksys cassette while keeping the perfectly good shifter and derailleur.
@@dre3951 xt m8000 sgs long cage is probably compatible
When bike's getting heavier the wider range cassette helps to compensate that. 11-53T 11-speed next generation LG cassette and I'm in.
Hmmm - That might be a good option on our tandem!!
I want to see some wireless shifting or electronic shifting using gear drive from pinion gear.
So what kind of a crankset/chainring are these compatible with? Shimano 12sp crankset with narrow wide chainring or 11sp crankset with 11speed specific chainring?
Linkglide chain fits on Sram Chain ring not sure about 12 speed shimano
Yeah, shame it's not compatible with XT stuff I just replaced my derailleur 2 months ago and I suspect that my cassette will need replacing before the end of next summer. I had planned on just going with the 11-42 XT cassette, but I would have definitely gone with the Linkglide if it didn't require me tossing my new derailleur (and chain?).
Now this is a step into the right direction. For example:
- 1 line focussing on durability and day-to-day usability
- 1 line focussing on sport and max performance
- 1 line focussing on the occasional rider with expectations regarding simplicity and comfort.
The old diversification into Gravel, Lifestyle, etc is nonsense.
Do you know if deore link glide is ready for sale yet?
Been Cycling for decades, Used both SRAM and Shimano components, I loved SRAM smooth faster shifting, I loved Shimano Robust component parts, and I used them both on my Grupo drivetrain as they are mostly compatible
What about the cues cranksets and sprockets? Are they compatible with hyperglide chains? That's what I want to know because it's a nightmare trying to find cranksets suitable for Deore 1 by conversions. 32 tooth sprockets just don't cut it on a hybrid bike.
Will this last longer on Fatbikes in the snow too? I assume it will handle the winter duty better is that a fair assumption?
Do you really need the new rear durailer if you have on of the 11speed 11-51 ones?
I wouldn't take the risk
Try it ! Somebody needs to see what happens when you put only the LG Cassette into a HG system.
Worst case it doesnt work and you get to buy the rest of the stuff to complete the groupset.

Hello and thank you, what should i use in front? Regular plates?
Just wondering what chain ring you used to drive the system as there’s no specific chain ring from what I can tell?
no, there isn't. Since any chain can be used with the linkglide cassette that means any crank/chainring can also be used. I'm using a SRAM GX crankset with my Cues U8000 Linkglide groupset and a YBN 11-speed chain.
You showed a new microspline mount at 3:11, but then showed a normal hyperglide mount... which confused me.
Good info, thanks. At that weight and price I don't get it. Buy a Deore HG set up instead. Cheap to replace and relatively light. Deore 10spd would be fine on an eMTB. Do we need more durable parts? I've done nearly 4000 miles on my SRAM GX cassette. Just about starting to feel like it needs replacing...
Not sure what you mean. There's going to be a Deore Linkglide too, which will be cheaper than the equivalent Deore Hyperglide. So, cheaper, more durable and you likely won't notice the extra weight on an emtb anyway? There's almost no downside (shifting won't be as snappy from what I can tell)
Would you be better investing in a chain checking tool and be a bit OCD on chain cleaning and lubing and changing the cheap SRAM basic chain (£13 in the UK). Then your cassette and chain ring should easily do more than 4,000 miles, depending on your riding style of course.

Ideal for eMTB, no need for 12 speed as you have the same range in link glide 11 speed!
12 speed /Shimano is 510% range, 12 speed SRAM is 520% range, but you have to live with what is effectively a 2 gear jump from 1st to second gear because it was tacked on as an afterthought after Shimano released their 10-51, since SRAM before that used 10-50. An 11-50 cassette like the 11 speed Linkglide has a range of 455%.
If you want proper range, the 618% on Shimano 2x12 can't be beaten as an off the shelf option.
why do you even need 12 speeds on an ebike 10 is fine heck i would probably only need like 5 speeds
@@SimonBauer7 It depends very much on where you ride - on the road in a mostly flat area, one gear will do very well. Off road on sustained climbs steep enough to the point where you've to move forward to stop the bike from wheelieing out, a much bigger gear range is needed.

OK, I understand that Hyperglide + shifting is better that Linkglide, but what about Hyperglide (I mean, the previous generation, like m8000), is still better shifting?
Wow awesome. Where can we buy linkglide. I'm in New Zealand and no luck finding it yet ???????
Seems like a stopgap between what we have now and internal gearboxes which is sury the goal for durability??
What's the difference between the 5100 and the derailleur you're saying is required?
What's the reluctance for cross-compatibility information?
Cable pull ratios are different apparently.
Please explain other technology as well.
When is it available in the uk
I'm trying to see the advantage from shimano's point of view of creating something cheaper that lasts longer, given most companies are all looking at the profits these days, maybe they are going for a larger market share.
or 450g for HG 11s cassette
or 325g !! for XG-1175 (the same range)
if you want low weight, ONLY 11s !
If the pitch is different how does that fit with the chainrings.?
Shimano website states that this LG chain is compatible with Hiperglide cassettes.
When will the drop bar version be coming out?
LinkGlide seems like a great upgrade for anyone with a SRAM SX/NX or Shimano Deore setup at standard. I wouldn't be willing to "invest" in cost saving from my SRAM GX as you'd have to cost up a new freehub body too.
That's another $50-100 generally depending on the wheels. I'd definitely want to test ride a bike with it first.
maybe i speak for a lot of people, when this new drivetrain will be available?
Will this work with the Shimano Deore M5100 11s group set? I love that 11-speed stuff, same range -1 teeth, and much more durable. If this new Linkglide XT shifter works with it that would be amazing.
Where can I purchase the 10-speed Linkglide set here in the US?
hi, you show in the video that the linkglide 10 speed 11-43 is a Deore-XT cassette is that so? is it not only a Deore?? i´m i wright or wrong?? cheers Lars
This cassette isn't compatible with my. XT drivetrain?
The whole lot does cost less money... because you only really need the cassette and the shifter... My microshift XCD 11 speed derailleur hooked to a U6000 11 shifter and an 11 speed u4000 cassette works just fine... obviously just adjust the limiting screws...
Definitely a great move by Shimano to fill the gap in the market
So is impossible to use Deore xt Linkglide with a micro shift 11speed compatible with Shimano MTB right?
What will happen if we use linkglide crankset with deore 5100 cassette and shifter
Surly 11 speed is 11 speed couldn't i use the linkglide shifter with the older chainset?
this is 11 speed, uses Old freehub?

i would really love a 10s 11-36 linkglide cassette, i'm almost always riding on the smallest gear. i want more harder gears, i don't need those easy gears, who are they for?
if ur always in such a hard gear then u sized ur front sprocket too small.....

Using your brake as a clutch (motor off) is the best option An. You wouldn't change gears without using a clutch on a motorbike or manual transmission car would you? Any mid drive motor is going to produce more torque and more consistently than your legs.

Sorry Doddy, BIG thumbs down for this one. What's the point in comparing 10/11s LG to the 12 speed HG+? Obviously, the HG+ 12s is more lightweight, but also less robust and much more pricey. You should have compared it to the 11s Deore XT M800 lineup. Yes, with 11s HG one can only get 11-46T cassette (probably enough for most people anyway) but otherwise, the total price would be similar to the new 11s LG... but that wouldn't look as impressive from marketing perspective, right?
Nice to see a stronger and cheaper option.
Hyperglide is really a good experience. Instant and smoother shifting. 🙂
I know it's a bit harsh but... I think they dropped the ball it should shift just as top notch as xt 12 speed and just be a little heavier and still be available with same 12 speed options and realistically it would actual cost a little more then the xt being built to last 3 times as long.
12 speed requires very small gaps between sprockets, maybe theres no enugh room to build more metal in it
You can’t have it both ways my man. The things that make XT HG 12sp shift so well limit its lifespan.
(Short thin teeth with ramps everywhere)
More gears = tighter tolerances,(more costly) smaller chains and less robustness in muddy conditions due to lack of clearance.
Taller, wider teeth with fewer ramps last longer and are cheaper to manufacture.
Doddy explains this in the video.
@@elslanedog1264 Actually you can it has a lot to do with the hardness relationship between the chain and cassette and also making sure you temper it in way that does make it brittle. Weather they'll actual do that is a whole other story

Why is there such a massive price difference between 10 speed and 11?

What about Di2 then?
Microshift Advent X has proved it is possible to make a strong, reliable, and unfathomably affordable 10 speed that weighs less that Shimano XT and SRAM GX. I don't see why LinkGlide 10 speed has to weigh like an anvil to achieve reliability.
Linkglide is perfect for old people who just want to ride their bike from point A to point B without thinking about replacing bike parts or upgrading.

Having different casette makes derailleur and shifter not work from other drivetrains? Seems like a cash grab.
ye, dont see why the derailieur and shifter have to be specific to the cassette as long as they're the same speed and the cage is long enough for the low gear
Keep an eye on LoveMBT You Tube channel. No doubt he will post a video when this stuff is available showing how it works with existing Shimano drive train bits and even with Sram.

Thanks for the video. Any chance one can run this with a 3X or 2X system. l love complicated cockpits and gadgets and things so l am not a fan of the new style but thats just me l guess.
if the LG chain is same size of 10s/11s i guess it work, the main problem is this only two 11-42t and 50t cassetes. i have an xtr 3x11 with 11-40 custom cassete with perfects gaps at low end.
