  • Meir Aerodrome closed in the early 1970s and the site has now become the Meir Park housing estate.
The earlier parts have mainly aviation-associated street names. The last official flight was on 16 August 1973 when Fred Holdcroft flew a Piper Tri-Pacer carrying a Sentinel journalist to Manchester. The last unofficial flight a year or two later by Eric Clutton was in a home-made folding machine called FRED Flying Runabout Experimental Design which the pilot towed home behind his car. The light planes used to be parked on the grass alongside the A50 road, opposite the Airport Garage, which remains. Staffordshire Potteries had a factory now demolished beside the aerodrome.
The site is now bnq, tesco, Aldi, west bridge furniture then wells warehouse and afew other warehouses which keep changing there name.

Nice... where are you getting this stuff from Ste??? It's great to see. I remember watching control line model aircraft being flown down there over 50 years ago. One of my favorite stories of the place is that they built the control tower out of the delivery crates used to ship in North American Harvards that were then built up, tested and flow out of there during the war.. Early recycling at it's best 😂

@Stecluz yes. Fly out of Southend and Colchester now. Still fly tiger moths as well as modern powered aircraft and gliders. Also flew a t6 harvard out of Earl's Colne 3 years ago. Occasionally fly over East Midlands and Lincolnshire as part of an ongoing historic airfields project. Just celebrated my 71st Birthday and 56 years in gliding and light aviation.

@Stecluz p.s. and yes remember the model aircraft being flown at meir heath end of airfield in 1967 when one radio controlled model aircraft hit a glider on finals over meir heath and embodied itself in the gliders wood and canvas fuselage. Glider landed safely but pilots very angry !
