This is where my fathers family name came from and we used to live in this area, I don't know much about what happened but our family moved North after either losing our Farm or Lodge and became Miners and changed the spelling of our name slightly, again I don't know why my Cousin has done some research on it so I'll have to contact her about it, thank you for telling this story of this lost history...

Lovely bit of history really enjoyed it , a hate seeing them with mixi see loads up here Northumberland with it so sad why they would introduce it to quell there numbers instead of letting folk harvest them for meat one thing a can never get my head around that the would rather see the animals suffer a nasty death then let them be eaten . Take care Liam

Very true mate, disease is the reason for the reduction in rabbit numbers, definatley not over hunting. Disease introduced by farmers/landowners.

Loved the video even if the sound was out of sync, but I think the issue's on my end. I don't see any other comments about it.

At the risk of asking a dumb question, if this place was originally run by only a single family, how did they keep a sustainable rabbit population fed over the winter? Since rabbits don't hibernate, it seems like they would have needed a huge stockpile of hay. It sounds like the warrener had his hands full just managing the animals and keeping poachers at bay, so where did the hay come from, did he buy it from farmers? Also, what happens if an animal gets sick or dies underground? Will other rabbits remove a carcass from the warren, or will it just sit down there and rot?

No such thing as a dumb question.
The rabbits would have most likely had to fend for themselves grazing on the heathlands, as wild rabbits still do today. When there is not a ready supply of their favourite grasses and other plants, they'll survive by eating less nutritious food like bark, tree and bush buds, and event twigs. The second thing they eat is a type of their own poo called cecotropes which contains partially digested food. This will allow their digestive system another chance to get nutrients and energy from the food they’ve already eaten.
I think it unlikely that they would have been fed extra food from the warreners, although it's possible that they may have cleared patches of snow in the harsher winters to allow the rabbits to get to the grass, but I'm not aware of any evidence for that.
I'm sure dead rabbits would have been cleared away to avoid encouraging scavengers. It's hard to know what they might have done with animals dying underground, as there would have been nothing to indicate that had happened.
