It seems like Sega is really pushing the whole "rivalry" dynamic between Sonic and Shadow. I mean I know Shadow is Sonic's greatest rival but that shouldn't be his defining character trait. Shadow had evolved into his own fully fleshed out character. But Sega keeps on just wanting to make him the edgy rival character to Sonic just for the sake of it.
I think they’re trying to make it evident that they aren’t rlly friends, since so many of these new fans and stuff rlly think they’re friends and…even more…but I think Sonic has just been more annoying to shadow

I actually don’t mind how they characterized shadow here. I feel like there’s more to shadow than just being a rival for sonic, but I wouldn’t say he’s misrepresented here. Both sonic and shadow are fundamentally different people with different views. They even bring it up in the episode that they often don’t see eye to eye on how to handle things, so it makes sense that that combined with their competitive attitudes would lead to them going head to head a lot. I look at them. They have a strange brotherly relationship sometimes they can be rather close and help one another. other times they can be better rivals because that’s just how brothers are
I 100% agree. While I do we think that they could do his character much better, I’m honestly just happy he’s not like he was in Boom. Anything better than that and I’m fine. I also like the inclusion of Sonic prime. When they said that it was cannon I was a bit disappointed only because I felt like they would just forget about it. So I’m satisfied.
Their inability to read the room is insane. Most people HATE this style of writing for Shadow, 99% of people praise Kirk's performance whenever it's toned down and is more calm and friendly (some Takeovers, many parts of Forces), people adore portrayals that showcase Shadow as a tragic hero (ShtH true ending, 06, Prime) and not Professor Edge, an anti-hero, an antagonist or a guy that doesn't give a damn. We're legit acting like that Moist Critical meme going WOOOOO YEAH BABY whenever Shadow is shown even an ounce of likable traits (joking around in Prime, smiling in Forces and the new render), we are all pro Team Dark being close friends and not just old associates not talking anymore, we all like Shadow being friendly. All of that and they STILL don't understand a single damn thing about what and why we like about Shadow. All the slack IDW and Boom threw their way for their bad use of Shadow taught them nothing, they still don't get it.

I just completed 06 and Heroes again and watching Shadow spout all this edgy non-sense after his peak writing in these two games just hurts me. I found this TailsTube episode really good and important. Both Sonic and Shadow are very important characters in the entire series, and they both have unique perspectives about each other. Some good and bad ones. I feel like they both play very good in SA2, and I wonder how both of these characters will play in Sonic X Shadow Generations and the third Sonic movie. I think it was a good thing that this TailsTube episode was made.
“New” lol Based on Keanu Reeves being cast as Shadow and the way his voice sounds (and everyone clearly only thinking of John Wick) it seems to me like this aggressive angry Shadow is the type they plan to go with rather than the actually cool suave, emotional, thoughtful Shadow we got in SA2. In this Tails Tube they straight up lie and retcon in the most gaslighty way saying they are polar opposites that never get along and have fought more often than not. Which is literally untrue. They’ve worked together more often than not. Even in the edgy era of Shadow, he works with Sonic depending on the route you take in his game, he entrusts the mission to Sonic in Colors DS. In Generations it’s the fight from when they first went against each other but then later Shadow shows up to cheer Sonic on. And even in freaking Forces he thinks to warn Sonic about Infinite but never makes it to Sonic but later saves Sonic from the fake Shadow and shows zero hostility. The majority of the time, he’s allies with Sonic. Only in the comics and Sonic Prime (and BOOM if you count it) so they portray them as being at odds. But in Prime, Sonic is so passive with Shadow while in SA2, Sonic X, 06, etc, Sonic has always stood up to Shadow or stood next to him with authoritative confidence. Even in this Tails Tube this doesn’t reflect how Sonic and Shadow act in Prime. Also Prime isn’t canon. At least not to he games. But the games are canon to Prime. lol

The thing that made Shadow stand out from the rest of the cast is that everyone else were these fun over the top characters and Shadow was like…a semi real person. Like bro, his best friend got shot…by like a real gun. No experiments, no car crash, no nothing. Like it was the most real thing to happen in this crazy universe. And Shadow went through an arc because of it, he felt kind of real compared to everyone else. And he’s the first sonic character to go through such drastic character development. Now, he just feels like…any other character.
The writing for Shadow is just….ugh. It’s just not for me, it’s marketed towards younger kids and the whole Goku/Vegeta shit and that’s fine but it’s just not for me. Ian Flynn touched on this a bit on the last BumbleKast episode but the writing is what it is and I’ll just have to remember their dynamic in the older games and cherish that because clearly this the dynamic they want for them going forward.
Knuckles acts more like vegeta. Shadow acts (or at least used to) act more like part one sasuke. Very calm, very collected and every now and then would get angry.
I want to see the Shadow we have seen in Sonic 06 and SA2, too. Perhaps the reason why Shadow was acting like everybody thought he was just being edgy to show his morally exposed character, is that he is just going through a lot of stress on the past adventures he has been on. They must’ve been really tough stuff he must’ve experienced. This new “Sonic X Shadow Generations” video game better be good. I wanted to see the old Shadow he appeared first to be again. I wish everybody would stop thinking that he is originally edgy, because on my hand, I stick to Rouge‘s instincts about him, thinking that he is a very nice person inside. He just couldn’t express himself that way, openly.
This is just a mini theory, it’s probably wrong, but maybe sega is trying to write shadow as a character who acts tough and doesn’t care about anything, but cracks a little and does “nice” things sometimes (like race sonic). Again that’s just a crazy thought though, maybe they still have trouble writing shadows character.

I actually don’t mind his voice tbh, just wish they’d give him better material and direction to work with. It’s the same problem I had with Roger for Sonic before Frontiers. They give Kirk a better script and I think he can be good.
2:40 Since people are having problems with this line, I have to intervene here. Shadow did a clever response to Sonic metaphor about his presence being attractive like a magnet by saying he feels repulsed (again like a magnet), complementing that with Tails finishing it with "Opposites attract" just like magnets.
Shadow's writing is suffering from something called "jerkassing". Where you make a character unlikable as a replacement for relationships. Flynn has been doing it a lot with Shadow, and I suspect he's basing him off Abridged DBZ Vegeta... ( yes, Flynn has talked at length how much he likes DBZA and even does impressions on his podcast)
I did like Sonic and Shadow’s rivalry here. Of course it’s very hostile, but there’s a hint of competitiveness and mutual respect that they hold for one another, as well as some funny roasts from Sonic (“Ultimate Sore Loser says what?”). It’s just not a relationship where they would openly admit it (unless pushed by someone like Tails), and I think it’s because we haven’t had a mainline game explore their more friendly banter since Sonic 06 (idk if Forces counts because I don’t know the full extent of their interactions there) where they’ve actively fought together side by side, or something where Shadow had a bigger presence in saving the world with Sonic (or at least talking to others besides Sonic). If it helps, I did notice Shadow wasn’t very hostile to Tails here (if at all), and Sonic is not the kind of guy for Shadow to be sappy to. Just sayin.’

@@TheDylan0602 Not to mention, it was stated by Ian Flynn(who is a Story Consultant for Sonic Prime) that Prime takes place "sometime" after Advance 3, it also covers Unleashed and Colors given the appearance of Orbot and Cubot in the show. However, it was later stated that some of the inconsistencies made in Prime were ignored.
I would take it with a grain of salt, I see these to educate younger audiences on the past of the series. The character act different in game compared to these Tail’s Tube videos.
Heck, write him like he was in Archie Sonic. A flawed hero who thinks himself unstoppable, but has to learn that not even the Ultimate Lifeform is perfect

I don’t like Shadow’s voice actor in this, he sounds too much of an edge lord, which is not what Shadow is like, comparing it to SA2 and Prime. Hopefully Keanu doesn’t do this type of his voice for his interpretation of Shadow 🦔🖤❤️
Jason Griffith was the last good voice for shadow in the games. Kurt Thornton just doesn't fit the roll. Hell the voice of shadow in sonic prime is damn good.
I don’t worry too much about the character portrayals in TailsTube. IDW, shows, and the games are the only things that matter. So far he’s been alright in IDW and Prime. It’s been awhile since our boy Shadow has been in a game though and he wasn’t super edgy like in his game.
It's not his fault, Sega has rules and guidelines, whether you believe them or not, which there is no reason you shouldn't, also Ian isn't the only writer on these

Meanwhile, Flynn is constantly needing feedback and changes. Flynn is the only writer they give massive feedback to, and its not because he writes them well, its the direct opposite. Also, we know the mandates for Sonic. Not Shadow. And the mandates Sonic has are actually pretty darn good and make a lot of sense.

sonic prime should NOT be cannon because 1) sonic doesn't live in green hill, he doesn't have a static home. 2) This new take on sonic's personality is realy cool but it becomes trash just by the fact it is cannon. 3) the overall world feels isolated from the universe and I am 100% sure this show didn't had the cannon in mind

They're going for a Vegeta-like Shadow, but with more humor this time. This Tails Tube was fun to watch, but it does unfortunately seem to confirm Shadow's lack of change from the Colors era of games. Many people want him to just act like the Adventure 2, Heroes, and 06 Shadow again. It's strange how insistent Sega is on making Shadow an angry character who dislikes Sonic for no reason. Keep in mind that this version of Shadow doesn't even have friends, apparently. Rouge and Omega are work partners. I will say, though... Shadow here at least had the decency to praise Sonic, and their banter was more amusing that what we have seen from them over the past few years. On top of that, this little Tails Tube already depicted Shadow far better than the entirety of the IDW comics portrayal of him. I don't know if that's worth praising or simply sad.
Shadow used to be a very melancholy and cool headed character who had a playful and mischievous side. Current Shadow lacks of balance and has no positive traits.

Honestly, I hate this new season of Tailstube, there is practically no explanation in terms of lore apart from the first episode and the plots suck. The Christmas special could have shown Sonic and the others remembering the good times they had but no, it had to just be an episode where everyone is loathsome to each other. This episode is not better, he's just riding the Sonic and Shadow trend and he stinks so much of mold here, give us back the old Shadow!

And Shadow went through an arc because of it, he felt kind of real compared to everyone else. And he’s the first sonic character to go through such drastic character development.
Now, he just feels like…any other character.
The writing for Shadow is just….ugh. It’s just not for me, it’s marketed towards younger kids and the whole Goku/Vegeta shit and that’s fine but it’s just not for me. Ian Flynn touched on this a bit on the last BumbleKast episode but the writing is what it is and I’ll just have to remember their dynamic in the older games and cherish that because clearly this the dynamic they want for them going forward.

I want to see the Shadow we have seen in Sonic 06 and SA2, too. Perhaps the reason why Shadow was acting like everybody thought he was just being edgy to show his morally exposed character, is that he is just going through a lot of stress on the past adventures he has been on. They must’ve been really tough stuff he must’ve experienced.
This new “Sonic X Shadow Generations” video game better be good. I wanted to see the old Shadow he appeared first to be again. I wish everybody would stop thinking that he is originally edgy, because on my hand, I stick to Rouge‘s instincts about him, thinking that he is a very nice person inside. He just couldn’t express himself that way, openly.
The sonic and shadow interaction in this is Definitely better than the last ones they did I think the voice direction can really make a character good
This is just a mini theory, it’s probably wrong, but maybe sega is trying to write shadow as a character who acts tough and doesn’t care about anything, but cracks a little and does “nice” things sometimes (like race sonic). Again that’s just a crazy thought though, maybe they still have trouble writing shadows character.
Dang, I'm looking through these comments and watching this video, and I hear/see nothing but dislike for Kirk Thornton's Shadow. I feel like I'm the only one who likes his Shadow voice.
I actually don’t mind his voice tbh, just wish they’d give him better material and direction to work with. It’s the same problem I had with Roger for Sonic before Frontiers. They give Kirk a better script and I think he can be good.
Same just bad writing is what brings most of the portrayals down the Va’s can be good but they never good writing to do so which is a shame

2:40 Since people are having problems with this line, I have to intervene here. Shadow did a clever response to Sonic metaphor about his presence being attractive like a magnet by saying he feels repulsed (again like a magnet), complementing that with Tails finishing it with "Opposites attract" just like magnets.
Shadow's writing is suffering from something called "jerkassing". Where you make a character unlikable as a replacement for relationships. Flynn has been doing it a lot with Shadow, and I suspect he's basing him off Abridged DBZ Vegeta... ( yes, Flynn has talked at length how much he likes DBZA and even does impressions on his podcast)
I did like Sonic and Shadow’s rivalry here. Of course it’s very hostile, but there’s a hint of competitiveness and mutual respect that they hold for one another, as well as some funny roasts from Sonic (“Ultimate Sore Loser says what?”). It’s just not a relationship where they would openly admit it (unless pushed by someone like Tails), and I think it’s because we haven’t had a mainline game explore their more friendly banter since Sonic 06 (idk if Forces counts because I don’t know the full extent of their interactions there) where they’ve actively fought together side by side, or something where Shadow had a bigger presence in saving the world with Sonic (or at least talking to others besides Sonic). If it helps, I did notice Shadow wasn’t very hostile to Tails here (if at all), and Sonic is not the kind of guy for Shadow to be sappy to. Just sayin.’

However, it was later stated that some of the inconsistencies made in Prime were ignored.

Jason Griffith was the last good voice for shadow in the games. Kurt Thornton just doesn't fit the roll. Hell the voice of shadow in sonic prime is damn good.

I don’t worry too much about the character portrayals in TailsTube. IDW, shows, and the games are the only things that matter. So far he’s been alright in IDW and Prime. It’s been awhile since our boy Shadow has been in a game though and he wasn’t super edgy like in his game.
I genuinely despise this writing for Shadow holy crap Ian is bad at writing him.
And I swear if he blames mandates again, I'm gonna laugh.
It's not his fault, Sega has rules and guidelines, whether you believe them or not, which there is no reason you shouldn't, also Ian isn't the only writer on these
@@SillyTron_ Yeah, no. When other comic writers have written for the comics, when writing Shadow well, they have said SEGA barely gives them feedback. Meanwhile, Flynn is constantly needing feedback and changes. Flynn is the only writer they give massive feedback to, and its not because he writes them well, its the direct opposite. Also, we know the mandates for Sonic. Not Shadow. And the mandates Sonic has are actually pretty darn good and make a lot of sense.

sonic prime should NOT be cannon because
1) sonic doesn't live in green hill, he doesn't have a static home.
2) This new take on sonic's personality is realy cool but it becomes trash just by the fact it is cannon.
3) the overall world feels isolated from the universe and I am 100% sure this show didn't had the cannon in mind

They're going for a Vegeta-like Shadow, but with more humor this time. This Tails Tube was fun to watch, but it does unfortunately seem to confirm Shadow's lack of change from the Colors era of games. Many people want him to just act like the Adventure 2, Heroes, and 06 Shadow again. It's strange how insistent Sega is on making Shadow an angry character who dislikes Sonic for no reason. Keep in mind that this version of Shadow doesn't even have friends, apparently. Rouge and Omega are work partners.
I will say, though... Shadow here at least had the decency to praise Sonic, and their banter was more amusing that what we have seen from them over the past few years. On top of that, this little Tails Tube already depicted Shadow far better than the entirety of the IDW comics portrayal of him. I don't know if that's worth praising or simply sad.
Shadow used to be a very melancholy and cool headed character who had a playful and mischievous side. Current Shadow lacks of balance and has no positive traits.
If you count the Archie comics, Tails also knows Sonic’s parents , his Uncle Chuck and Rob ‘O the Hedge ( Amy’s cousin).

Sonic and shadow respected each other back when sonic still had good writers. Just because on the surface level they didn’t get along, shadow literally says, sonic I think you might be the ultimate life form. I hate this tailstube episode it’s horrible, why do they hate each other and shadow is still acting like edgy the hedgy I hate it and I hope they have Japanese writers for sonic x shadow generations because so far they’ve been the only ones to write good sonic stories. That’s just not how shadow and sonic are, they don’t act like that, sonic and shadow would easily complement each other and they can work together perfectly fine, shadow is a good character just as much as sonic and they know that. While sonic may not like shadows methods he knows he’ll get it done. I don’t know why the writers can’t understand the sonic characters, it’s not hard to. That’s just not right. Sorry I rambled but this tailstube episode was horrible and hard to watch

Jokes aside you have a point. In canon, there’s only about four or five noteworthy hedgehogs at most. So I feel like this series will be really short-lived. (I guess there’s technically all of the metal hedgehogs we’ve seen throughout the series, but I don’t know if they count.)

Honestly, I hate this new season of Tailstube, there is practically no explanation in terms of lore apart from the first episode and the plots suck.
The Christmas special could have shown Sonic and the others remembering the good times they had but no, it had to just be an episode where everyone is loathsome to each other.
This episode is not better, he's just riding the Sonic and Shadow trend and he stinks so much of mold here, give us back the old Shadow!
