You can watch 6000 performances of this exact same choreography, and no one does the goat-like hop at 6:52 like Nureyev does. The attention to detail is literally jaw-dropping! His legs look like a literal faun’s/goat’s legs it’s absolutely breathtaking. The position of his legs when he’s in the air (pause it and see for your self!) and the slight bounce when he lands. I’ve seen it a million times on replay and I shudder every single time as if it was my first time.
I cannot even imagine how this was experienced by the audience at the premiere with Nijinsky. The music and that incredible choreography which was unlike anything they were expecting. And of course Nijinsky’s sexual act at the very end. I think Nureyev was magnificent here. But I still wonder how shocking it all must have been back in the early 1900’s. Of any ballet premiere ever, this is the one that I wish I could have witnessed first hand.
I recognize that I have a lot admire the choreography and interpretation by Nijinsky in all his ballets. I admire who breaks with the rules established. In case, even when to Debussy didn't like it this choreography I find a sensibility superb and a concept like a Picasso picture. I love it, I do not get tired of watching this ballet. Very nice performance by Nureyev
Wow! So happy to find this. I actually saw the Joffrey do this in NYC in the mid 80s. Was an extraordinary program, faithfully reproducing the Ballets Russes versions of this Debussy piece, and piece by Satie, and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. All so magnificent! Thanks for posting!
I don't even like ballet but everything choreographed by Nijinsky that I've seen seems like a psychedelic trip far beyond what I stereotipically expect from ballet. And to think this dance is inspired from a piece of music, which was based on a poem, which was inspired by symbolism and neoclassicism makes me think of "Art" with a capital A.
It's amazing how Vaslav Nijinsky's use of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic poses in his choreography suggests the delicate, deliberate, and precautionary movements of Deer. It's such a revolutionary investiture in movement!!
This is not at all about a deer. A "faun" (not a "fawn") in Roman mythology is one of a class of lustful rural gods, represented as a man with a goat's horns, ears, legs, and tail.
A masterpiece if ever there was one ! de Bussy of course , Nureyev dancing Nijinsky. Difficult to bring the essence of life, poetry and style together. The most obscure instinct revealed in the most basic form and purity by deBussy's music and perfectly understood by Nijinsky's choreography. Nureyev is the chantilly cream on top of the cake that brings tears to your eyes.
@@stechfinve4142 at least it's all over now though. But seriously, given the question, what else were we supposed to do? Pick Petrushka? I don't think so lmao
Все оценивается в сравнении.Я смотрю балет с участием разных танцоров.Смотрела с Цискаридзе,Плисецкой и Шарль Жудом.Больше понравилось в исполнении Нуриева!,Конечно здесь на вкус и цвет!
I watched a lot of male dancers : they're nothing compared to him. They're not even dancers, just athletes. Ballet is not just about technique, it's about telling a story, playing characters without saying a single word.

That hop is important
But he's not bad with feet
I think this is the most brilliant dance I have seen by Nureyev-enchanted - shall watch it time & again.
As do I.

Nureyevs' face when he grins is the epitome of lust.....Brilliant performance.
