I know a lot of violin and viola players that play without them. I have a long neck and broad shoulders so they tend to help if I'm having to play fast and with a lot of shifts but even then I don't necessarily NEED one. I just prefer it. And I think it's good for any student to learn to play with one. If you play well or even better without one then that's no problem at all. No one's gonna be talking about whether or not you have a shoulder rest if you can play well. And if they are it'll probably be fellow musicians who thought it interesting that you don't use one.
I don't even use a shoulder rest, somebody stole it from our violins in our band room, so almost everybody who uses a violin in our Mariachi class play's without one 😂
Ideally, you'd get a teacher and let your teacher help you find an instrument. There are a number of instruments you can self-teach. Violin isn't one of them. If you play with bad technique, you can hurt yourself.
🧐 The biggest debate among the violin community is that in your videos the left is right and the right is left…a feature easily fixable before video recording is made.🤫
I think everyone who is learning to play a violin or viola classically should learn how to play with one. They come in handy if you're playing for long periods as one might in operas, musicals, and such; or otherwise fast sections, quick shifts, and the like. I use one but, that said, I don't think they're absolutely essential, I know a lot of professional musicians who play without them. It might also depend on the style. Some styles and genres just don't need one. Bluegrass is a good example, if you were trained classically you might need one but if you grew up playing bluegrass violin you'd probably be hindered by one. It just depends. As shown here electric instruments are often built to accommodate one in some fashion but everyone has a different adjustment and many don't use one at all. The question is a very good one but also an under-informed one. Maybe address that too.
I tried using a KUN on my Yamaha SV-120 because it came without a factory shoulder rest. I could never get it to stay consistently. I finally broke down and bought a factory shoulder rest for $90
The viper looks awesome.
hell yeah it does!!!
Flying V
But does it look 3,700 good🤔😢
I like this channel even though I’m a measly mandolin player but this dude reminds me of Dave mustaine with hard orchestral chops
I always hated the shoulder rest and would take them off everytime even though most of my mates liked them.
If it works for you, that's great. I'm pretty helpless without one.
Y tho? Shoulder rests feel much better
@@acicada1526 my theory is I have a short neck lol. It just always felt super uncomfortable for me. The moment id take it off I felt complete haha

And as I learned literally today it really helps to have a snug but not tight fit

How horrible does a person have to be to steal a shoulder rest?
I am more interested in knowing more about that greenish violin its beautiful.
How much should I spend on a violin if I want to learn? I can play the piano and guitar, I don't know how much of that will carry over.

Yup. It's easy to fix. It's also really annoying when you're recording. And it keeps people commenting, which feeds the algorithm, so...
When I was in school learning violin, I just used a sponge with a rubber band !!!
Dig that shirt bud
Actually for the yinfente Violins I would add a sponge shoulder rest
I'd add some lighter fluid and a match.
@@ElectricViolinShop Nah, the Yinfente Electric Violins have improved over the years, also I used a Sponge Shoulder rest and that worked
: )

Some pros use a shoulder rest ,,,, REAL pros use a sponge and rubber band 😎
I'm 6'6" with a neck to match. Yes I use a shoulder rest and a tall chin rest

Why is there a debate? Play it the way that is most comfortable for you.
You'd be surprised. Lots of folks want YOU to do it THEIR way.
WYOMING SHIRT. the flag of my people. HELLO
