Timmy Morrison was delivered by emergency C-section, weighing in at 3 pounds, 9 ounces. Doctors put him under anesthesia within a week and into surgery within a month. Some of the contents of his stomach sometimes made their way to his lungs. Workers in the intensive care unit frequently needed to resuscitate him. He arrived seven weeks premature - but, in a way, just at the right time.
Six months before Timmy was born, President Barack Obama signed a sweeping health care law that would come to bear his name. Six days before Timmy’s birth, the Obama administration began to phase in a provision that banned insurance companies from limiting how much they would pay for any individual’s medical bills over his or her lifetime. At the time the Affordable Care Act passed, 91 million Americans had employer-sponsored plans that imposed those so-called lifetime limits.
That group included Timmy’s parents, whose plan previously included a $1 million lifetime limit. This Obamacare provision took effect September 23, 2010. Timmy was born September 29. On December 17, he surpassed $1 million worth of bills in the neonatal intensive care unit. He didn’t leave the NICU until he was 6 months old.
If Timmy had been born a week earlier, his medical benefits could have run out while he was still in the NICU. But that didn’t happen. His insurer covered everything. The NICU bills his parents save total just over $2 million (they come out to $2,070,146.94, to be exact).

Toushiro1010 I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself - we are creatures that should not exist by natural law... We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, that accretion of sensory experience and feelings, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody's nobody... I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny our programming. Stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction - one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

It will never stop astounding me how hard conservatives will fight for fetuses to get born, but then won't spend a single ounce of effort on the already living children suffering in poverty and foster care. Abortion is a tragedy for everyone involved, but it's one that has to exist as an option so long as pregnancy cannot be perfectly controlled. If anti-choicers would make more of an effort to increase access to birth control and supported the disadvantaged children already living and breathing outside the womb, I would actually respect their movement.

    • @Pbdave1092
      @Pbdave1092 7 років тому +25

A lot of them are religious, and religions are obsessed with sex and control of women. They care about fetuses and they are against contraceptives because that is what they are ALWAYS taught of in Church. If the churches focuses on teaching about helping the poor, the orphans, the refugees and the needy, then these religious conservatives would start to realign their focus. But, as I said, the Church is obsessed with sex and control of women. That is why in my opinion, religion poisons everything. Instead of teaching their congregants on values, they focus on specific actions. Instead of teaching forgiveness and empathy, they teach about abstinence and the evil of abortion.

It isn't free. Taxes cover the premiums for a universal insurance policy. It's always a good idea to keep in mind that someone is paying. In the USA a lot of people have insurance coverage through an employer. They do not necessarily see or feel the cost. If a system is abused whether private insurance or universal healtcare, somebody is paying and ultimately affects everyone.

Of course my position would be different if it were my child. I don't think I would manage to be even the slightest bit objective. I think that's a bit besides that point though.
Imagine you had exactly 1 million to spend per year. Would you rather spend it on keeping this child alive, or would you use it to keep 10 people with similarly severe, but less expensive illnesses alive?
That is my core point. There is limited money and this is (in my eyes) an excessive amount spent on a single person, when there is already a lack of money in several other areas. Reducing spending, raising taxes etc all increase the amount of money available, but do not change the fact that the amount is limited, while the ways you can help people are pretty much limitless. That means sometimes you need the hard decision to not help - even if people tell you that you are a heartless bastard when doing so.

I'm chronically ill and for my condition alone I need to see a doctor at least twice a year. I do pay for that tho, but that's my choice and it's convenient (very convenient). However, the overall annual cost of said visit and my medicine is lower than 100 USD.

I honestly think we should be lowering healthcare costs and not raising spending limits, often the cost of medical care could be a fraction of the cost but the problem is hospitals have become a business and should be government run as well as having government run medical suppliers. This kid had over 1 million dollars spent on the first 3 months of his life and it doesn't look like he will ever outgrow his medical condition. This much money should've never been spent and it's the reason health insurance is so expensive.

I hope he truly makes it. I wish the best for his family. When I was a kid, my nephew was born with problems similar to this kid.
My nephew had problems with his throat and wasn't able to eat from his mouth, otherwise food(milk at that time) would suffocate him by going in his lungs. He also had problems with his eyes and was almost blind, couldn't talk and couldn't play or walk. He was only able to move around and make some sounds but that was it. The scene where they showed Timmy's tube in his abdomen.... tears started flowing and old memories started to come really fast to my mind, my nephew was also fed by a tube and a syringe in his stomach. Seeing all the medical stuff, all those things laying around.... it felt like seeing my older brother's house.
I truly wish the best for him and his family. I know the struggle, I've personally seen that routine they were talking about at the end of the video.
It's been 9 years since Deancent(my nephew) passed away.... only 5 since her mother committed suicide.
Stay strong Timmy. I hope your family will cope with your situation. If the family sees or reads my comment... keep your chin high, be happy to see him smiling and moving around, I don't know what I would give in order to see my nephew smile like your kid does. Know that you're not alone and don't give up.
I still struggle with the pain even if a lot of time has passed. I know what you're going through.

You also need to factor in hospitals billing insurance companies 400$ to change an iv fluid bag (just to change it). And since current regulations force insurance companies to pay out these outrageous costs with no limit is what makes premiums so high, 40k to 50k a year on middle income families. The same thing happens to the education system, student loans are basically guaranteed to people and tuition fees are rising because of that. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Good luck fixing corporate greed in the US.

then why aren't we discussing raising taxes? an insurance company is a business, if they insure a bunch of people who aren't healthy there won't be enough premiums to pay out in claims. the whole point of an insurance company is to insure healthy people without pre existing conditions so they can pay when it's claim time. this is why premiums increase due to the amount of claims, so instead of turning to a business to solve the problem why aren't we talking about what we can do? like raising taxes for universal healthcare?

Nathan Emmert so Nathan your explanation to why you hate this video is because it's not about the lost lives of abortions, but when it's about healthcare of a living person who can't get healthcare because of caps in lifetime policy, doesn't that sound relatable there both human lives so why hate on healthcare as a subject. It seems to me that you don't understand a human life clearly if you (in a another post) say to look at abortions lives matter more than a person who likely the parents had to decide to kill or keep, even when the baby will cost millions of dollars.
Your argument sounds stupid to me, these parents had to most likely say should we abort this baby or keep them, that is a hard choice and they kept Timmy even when he costs the family everything because they love him but can't get the healthcare for a certain amount of time during the dismissal of the affordable care act for something better, the more time they spend with the affordable care act not in place, the more lives will die.
The new trump policy will keep saying replacing for something better, but will they actually replace it on the same hour and second that the affordable care act will fall, these are the things people worry for and also abortions occur when for example; rape, already dead, major health issues, etc. abortions don't happen because someone said oh they are a girl or a boy lets kill them because I wanted a he or she.

We are so focused on controlling women's sex life, abortion, birth control but we are not ready to help a family to raise their children? we are not willing to have our fellow Americans covered by an insurance? I just don't understand how we are so selfish. We just want the baby to be born and then let him die if the parents are too poor. Or let people die because they are too poor... You said "I don't know how we can be so selfish," and I have an answer that most Americans don't want to hear.
America was entirely founded on greed. White Americans didn't exist til the greediest members of European society forced their families to give up their lives, safety and friends to make a perilous journey across oceans and even more so dependant on how far west they moved when they got there, all based on the vague possibility of getting rich off of resources like gold and jewels. They killed the natives because they wanted to own land rather than share it. They enslaved people for personal gain. Created racist laws and sexist laws and anything else to oppress people not originally in charge or rich.
Sadly, 99% of America is born and raised by generations of greed that birthed the worst kind of capitalism. It's genetic. It's tradition. It's life. I'm sorry, but history shows that modern America was almost purely created to oppress the poor in ways no other first world country (with more expansive history) would ever even attempt to put it's civilians through.
The past has damned you... only the future can put things right. Fight for your right as civilians to become the land of the free you claim to be.

Legit the ONLY reason for keeping the lifetime limit is because of money and greed and THAT is disgusting

    I don't care, repeal it.
And replace with Universal health care.

I feel bad for this child, but because of Obama care I haven't had insurance for awhile now because we're not poor enough to get Obama care and we don't have enough money to get any other insurance. Some kids who are In a situation like him but and don't have the right amount of money are also suffering, Congress needs to find a way to get *everyone* health care not just the rich and the poor everyone.

Yeah the system screws over those who are in the middle and slightly under the middle. This is why the Democrats are fighting for medicare for all. A system that would treat everyone the same similar to Canada's and UK's systems.

But some negative affects of universal heathcare is loss of companys which means loss of jobs which means that unemployment will go up

John Gibbs the mass needed is the same, if one doctor is fired because people dont go the this hopsital, another doctor is hired in a public hospital.

My cousin was born with some of his organs outside of his body. I live in Canada where healthcare is free, thanks to that he was able to get the surgeries he needed to survive.

I’m not saying the NHS is perfect but it’s much better than bankruptcy and worrying how your are gonna pay for the ambulance trip or hospital stay say if you are having a heart attack or a stroke.

This is why I look in disbelief at those who say universal healthcare will ration care. The lifetime limits are rationing care. Denying people the ability to buy insurance because of pre-existing conditions is rationing care. Pricing insurance out of reach for millions of Americans is rationing care.

It seem ridiculous how expensive is the healtcare in the US. There should be regulation (limit) on the price of medical services, drugs etc. No hospital should scam people off their money.

Seriously though, at least children should get unconditional free healthcare no matter what
can't image fearing debt, on top of a sick BABY

@Nick Arjoma I didn't mean anything political by it. I know the NHS isn't perfect and there are children who are unfortunately failed by the government but I do think Britain is at least a bit better than America, in that there is some form of free heath care available - as flawed as it may be.

That little boy is so adorable; it broke my heart when I saw the scene where the parents changed the tube he uses to breathe. It's completely and utterly obvious that no child should have to go through such a procedure, but it is even more so that no child should be left to die.
