Quick Video explaining how to set up a usb key or external hard disk on the Asus RT-N56U Gaming Wireless Router. And how to access the disk from your computer.
thanks had the ASUS router for a while and have an expernal hard drive that I have wanted to use as a network drive but didn't know how to do it... "Happy Days"
The solution was right under my nose, Network Neighborhood Share under USB Application has to be Enabled Share, in order for you to gain access to it through Windows network. Thanks to CessneiJTV for that help
You can put any files into the share or shares that you create. As for streaming there is alot that influences your ability to stream. From your lan it should be fine. From an external access, I'm not sure never tried it. You would need to have a really good upload speed from your isp. As for vob files. I use vlc.
Hello Everyone, Quite a few people have been experianceing random problems with the usb ftp function, as have I. there are a few random things you can do to try fixing this but they are very tempermental which is a shame. it seems this feature is not as good as it is made out to be. If your having a problem with accessing the drive //rt-n56u from the run command try:(check next post)
Hi, thank you for your video, could you explain the last part, only for a mac i.e how do I get the run box on a mac. I can easily access my hard disc on my tablet, but not on my laptop.
Hi. Is wake on LAN functional. Especially from internet or does the USB harddisk will be on always? Great videos from you about the router mate. Thanks
HI, Just bought one of these, pre-used to act as an Access PoInt. I do not see an AiDisk option in the USB Application.. Is the AiDisk option only available in router mode?? I can open the USB application and select Samba share and enbale it.. but can not see this USB disk externally, It does however appeare as a Media device in Windows 10 Network places... Regards A
@@AsidsTechTips Ah Thanks for the prompt reply.. If I switch back to router mode will this present any problems with the connection to the main, broadband, router in the house.. suspect it will.. TA again
Ah .. found the problem, needed to create a new user and password, apart from 'admin', the Samba share worked as expected, no need to reconfigure unit as a router rather than AP... easy really.. Thanks for the discussion and video above also very helpful.. TA A
Hello great video!! I am trying to stream 3d 1080p videos from my usb 3.0 hard drive to my 2nd gen apple tv wirelessly but to no avail. The router is about 8 feet from the tv and unobstructed. I have no issues streaming 720p or hdtv videos. Are there any settings I can change to make this happen? Can't wait to hear what you think...Thanks!!
oh, by the way: can you link into individual files from a website? As in if I have a website on which I want to stream a video hosted on my hdd attached to the router, is that possible?
Hi just saw your video I just followed your instructions to the letter however I realized that my router dose not display the correct space it says 1.07GB rather then 500GB and it doesn't even display the correct name like yours does. Could it be possible that the router is only compatible with some hard drives?
Hi, nice tutorial! When i try to enter my router interface by going to 192.168.1.1, sometimes the full interface is shown, but most of the time, only a bit of it is shown. The square for usbs are blue, the navigation panel on the left and the toolbar at the top aren't shown. Have you got any tips i could try? It's really annoying! Thanks!
i have a 3tb WD external hard drive. I partitioned it into 1.5 and 1.3 tb hoping that now the router will detect but i still get WD My Book 1130 unmounted. Can you please tell me if there is any way i can use my 3TB hard drive with this router?
Thank you for the video! Everything follows up to typing into "RUN" "\\RT-N56U". I get an error message saying "Windows cannot access \\RT-N56U" Detail states "Error code 0x80070035 The network path was not found" I can see the USB drive in the browser. Any help wold be greatly appreciated. Windows 7 Ultimate 64b
keeps saying invalid ip when I try to set the admin account on the ai disk setup also says this: The wireless router currently uses a private WAN IP address (192.168.x.x, 10,x,x,x, or 172.16.x.x). This router may be in the multiple-NAT environment and DDNS service cannot work in this environment.
Help, I just bought this today and straight of the box the wan and lan port 4 lights constantly come on without any lead attached. and the modem cannot recognise the router, please help
@lekane06 I had the same problem and I was desperately changing my settings for couple of hours. The problem vanished when I changed my Kaspersky antivirus settings and set my home network as "trusted network". You can find aditional tips by searching "Error Message: Windows cannot access \\ and Error Code 0x80070035" the seconf result form answers.microsoft had a couple of good tips
Great video but I am having a problem at step "2" On entering an account name I get the response "DDNS server does not respond. Please try again." I have tried several names (just alphanumeric characters) but always get the same message Any ideas of where I might be going wrong. Thanks
Everything works perfectly! But when I run \ t-n56u I seem to only be able to put files in the main drive and not inside folders.... It says that I don't have permission? wtf? I'm on a mbp retina.
I used to have no problems adding my external as a Network Location via Samba...then I upgraded the firmware and a month or so later Windows could no longer find the network location . I can stream via the Media Server function, but not FTP abilities. I've tried adding network locations and mapping the drive, I've tried renaming the device, releasing and renewing the IP address for my PC, setting up the router from scratch, disabling my protetection, disabling my VPN connectivity, running to the gateway IP, enabling Network Discovery, but nothing seems to be working. Anyone have any ideas whatsoever? I'm at my wit's end. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
"\\RT-N56U" didn't work for me. But "\\192.168.1.1" worked fine.. Then you can right click on the Network and press map the devices and type in the same thing and just choose a map inside.. Your fpt will pop up as a map in a network.. kinda.
Your going to have to be more spcific Martig. If wired: with cat 6 cable, each cable not exceeding 5m. Large file transfer or HD streaming is unlike anything you will have ever seen, Lightening Quick. Same goes for wifi, With no filters av firewall interfearing on a 5g frequency the transfer speed is super fast. Internet: Dependent on your isp. I can download 20gb in about 12 mins.
@4:30 you state that you can use a different password than your routers gui password for the internet FTP login , can you please explain how to do this? As I dont want to send my router login info out unencrypted
Hi Jay, you can do this by setting up user accounts. but i cannot check this any more is i no longer use this router, If i am to be honest, the FTP function and filesharing off the router was never very good or stable for that matter, i would recommend you use it for messing around, if you actully want to share files properly your better off getting a synology.
When I press "Next" on second screen, I am having this error message "DDNS server does not respond. Please try again". I have tried several times but it is persistent. Can anybody help me with this?
this is very informative, thank you, im discovering new aspects of my dsl n55u, its got alot more features than i thought...

Thanks a lot for the video...used it for another model and it worked just fine :) Tnx!!
If anyone still got a problem with the \
t-n56u commando, try \\192.168.1.1 instead. Worked for me! Happy days indeed
Lol, WoW. Thanks for the vid, helped a lot. Finally figured out how to get it working.

Enable "Network Place(Samba) Share" to access the router via Network or via Run
