Why I had the Fujifilm X-S20 + XF8mm f/3.5 R WR Over 2 Months Ago

  • Introducing the new Fujifilm X-S20 + XF8mm f/3.5 R WR lens. Some of you might be wondering why I had an early preview of the newest additions to the X Series line-up. The only reason was that I was commissioned to take some lifestyle photos for Fujifilm Japan for the launch. Since the camera, lens, and firmware were all pre-production, I was not allowed to do a review, which is fair. However, I was allowed to play around with it and check out all the new features. I did get a media brief just before the launch, but this was after I had to return the camera. Because of this, I inserted text where necessary. I look forward to getting a production copy next month and conducting a full review. Please check out my other video where I'm on the streets of Vancouver, and also read my article at Fujilove Magazine, including more photographs.

    Fuji understands well who the xs20 is for - travelers and content creators. Autofocus is a big upgrade from xs10 + new battery. Price is a bit on the high side imo. For the next x summit, i guess it will be the x pro 4

      @bigheadtaco  Рік тому +4

      When I had the camera and didn't have a media brief yet, my guess was $1099 to $1199. I knew it would be more than the X-S10 with so many upgrades. $1299 does feel a bit high, but I guess the market will decide if people are willing to pay that premium. I was hoping for an EVF upgrade for that price, but having such a huge upgrade in video performance in such a compact camera will be worth it for many content creators for sure.

      I have an X-E3 camera and plan to get a more capable camera for wildlife, eclipse and macro photography. This seems to be almost ideal for my needs. It is small and light for taking away on overseas holidays, it has focus bracketing a larger battery. Even though I don't do much in way of video photography. If I want to video an animal, there is a dedicated video button to press so there is no need to press any other buttons. The ability to photograph animals in slow motion is wonderful.
      The only thing that I don't like about it is the missing control to change focus mode. I know that Fujifilm have changed the paradigm on how the control works. I would have thought that a good compromise would be to have a button live the X-H2 and X-H2S cameras have and every time it is pressed it would cycle through the M/C/S modes.
      I will probably buy this camera when it arrives.

    Thank U for excellent video. I'm OK with price increase considering video feature update, but the rubber part around EVF. That's a sad part.

  • @Kevon420
    @Kevon420 Рік тому +6

    Seems like a great camera, my only issue is that they didn’t up the EVF resolution to 3.69M dot. That to me is the new standard and a great sweet spot - would’ve made this camera a winner for me with the new battery and other upgrades. I love the open gate video option, when cropped to 4:3 it’s really a beautiful way of composing.
    I think I’m gonna wait and see what the eventual XPro 4 is before jumping into this next generation of Fujifilm cameras.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  Рік тому +2

      I was thinking the same thing about the EVF. My guess is that they may had to upgrade the EVF housing since the X-S20 does have a built-in pop-up flash, something that the other higher res EVF cameras don't have. That's a really tight space in there.

    • @Kevon420
      @Kevon420 Рік тому +1

      @@bigheadtaco I do appreciate the pop up flash to be fair. Fill flash is always useful in a pinch and while the XS20 is not perfect, it is another appealing feature for this camera.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  Рік тому +1

      not weather-sealed since it's a prosumer camera. They reserve that for their professional camera bodies.

  • @MarcioK
    @MarcioK Рік тому +1

    X-S10 user here, probably will upgrade to this one. In fact, for me use is almost overkill, but for sure solve my biggest gripe with the X-S10, battery life (I have to always bring at least 3 - other day the 1st one was depleted after 150 shots and 15 mins of 4k video). AF sometimes is not the best, and it looks like it was adressed too. The "jumpy" IBIS in video, will have to see.
    Since Fujifilm had to make modifications on the body (larger grip, new wiring for the fan and headphone jack), and did not put weather sealing, wish they had modded a bit more. A button in the fornt left, like in the X-H2/S, to change focus modes or another function. And, specially (since there is no weather sealing to bother), making the front dial clickable. I like to shoot with vintage lenses sometimes, and in older cameras, pressing a dial (the back one) brought the enlarged view, which is very useful (I had to map the video record button for it).
    The price is a little bit higher for my tastes, but if you shoot a lot of video, or for hybrid use (my case), there is nothing else in this price range with these specs. 6.2K open gate in 10-bit 4:2:2? External raw recording? Is X-H and GH6 stuff in a cheaper and (much) smaller body. For stills only...maybe not so much.
    My ideal Fuji would be a X-E5 with the older style (more controls) and IBIS - I like rangefinder bodies, are much more discreet, with 10bit 4k video, even with 30 mins restriction. But I guess that Fuji will never put IBIS in their rangefinder bodies (with the small battery it chews batteries, as X-S10 showed, and with the larger one they will have to enlarge the width quite a bit), then this one probably will be my next - specially because the writing is on the wall, Kaizen is dead is the older models will not get significant firmware refreshes.

    I hate to be this guy, but an f3.5 on an aps-c camera is terrible. Not because of shallow depth of field. But because of low light performance. I’d rather have the sigma 16mm f1.4. Not just because of the depth of field, but for the sake of low light. And I get not everyone is taking pictures or capturing video in the dark. But the whole point is to be able to use the camera and lens in any and every situation. Just my opinion, so please no one hate me. 😂

      The X-S and X-H series are the only X-Series cameras that don't have a finish option. I think it's because the designers know that it's more function than form. A silver X-H2 or X-S20 would look weird because the camera lines are awkward, agreed. But these are functional tools for those with specific needs. That's why Fujifilm also makes the X-T5 and we look forward to the X-Pro4 and X-E5 when it comes to design language.
