A shame Sweviver hasn't taken the time to update the old HP Reverb images he took when it was V1 and before updates via SteamVR which improved the clarity of the headset. I would wager the 8KX and Reverb are quite similar but the 8KX has a wider FOV and larger area of focus in the centre.
@@SweViver At least you got a V1. I used my own money to get mine. I think your V1 might fare better now with beta branches of Steam VR and Steam WMR. Give it a try although I appreciate getting macro shots of that tiny area of focus makes it more difficult.
2:44 demonstration sold me, it looks like we're getting critically close to the point where we can read with this on. What's next is increasing how light the headset is, so that it can be used as a desktop replacement.
Hey Martin, I really appreciate the content. Sebastian's video yesterday was really quite toxic. While sebastian was almost fine, the comment section was actual AIDs. That was the first time I've seen the fact that people hate you. Just keep doing what you're doing.
since martin works for pimax the hate swapped a bit over to him, there may be other reasons aswell, like he isn't 100% honest but the point is that the company does such a bullshit sometimes, like you saw what they did on sebastian like on their website: 8k+ 3840x2160 *2 -still nothing about upscale to read there 200° fov irritating data - they mean diagonal fov but don't write it, everyone else is using Horizontal who the heck is using diagonal... that's just such a filthy move the name 8k... it's not even 8k it's 4k... since one eye is only recieving 4k and you need 4x4k for 8k... lying about release/shipping/rewards and all the backer problems well... the support of course... and all the other shit they have done, but i guess you already knew all that !?
@@Lakus231 Index uses their 130 diagonal and never their 115 horizontal... and no one ever criticizes them for that. XTAL announced their 8k which is two 4k panels and you aren't complaining. Pimax is not perfect but since it is the only company run by VR enthusiasts directly from the community and not a giant corporation you think they would get a little more support as David slinging rocks at 4 or 5 Goliaths.
@@Lakus231 the label 4k is inherently misleading. Every previous measurement of pixels on screen takes the second measurement. Like 1920×1080 is 1080p, and 3840x1440 is 1440p. I you want to complain semantics, call it 2160p then. It's called pimax 8k because 3840x2 is basically 8,000. Like stated in the previous comments, the index is 115 degrees horizontal, but you dont complain that they say its 130 degrees.
@@Lakus231 I dont get why you're complaining about the small things more so than the fact that they're always delaying their products, and how it's going to have been approaching 3 years before the fact the backers will get their 8kX headset. Your priorities are whack.
Thanks for the comparison, I am changing from a Reverb 1 and wondered how the image quality (I like the Reverbs Picture) compares to the Pimax 8K+ and 8KX and this deliveres the answer. It seems even the upscaled 8K+ picture is close to the G1s picture, thats cool
Holy crap, that see through-the-lenses is incredible. I don't really see SDE but there are lines in certain parts (could be from the camera itself). But overall impression is that the view is very crisp, clear and details. This is what I am talking about...this headset will help with distances/jagginess when it comes to racing in VR. Thanks for this video and by the way, the music is nice also.
Wow the Index looks way better than most of the other Pimax headsets. The only one just slightly better is the 8KX and not by much. I am looking forward to getting one now.
Impressive stuff! Though I'm surprised at how little the difference is with the Index in many of the shots! Though the airplane cockpit was actually a huge difference. Thanks for the work on this mate :P (btw still awaiting you on discord lol). I hope I get the chance to really have some time with the 8K-X If you can come to Belgium ^.^

Very well done video showcasing the new power and resolution of the new Pimax .. I hope you and MRTV settle whatever misunderstanding occurred. I think you guys have worked well together and it's a mutual beneficial relationship even if Sebastian has certain criticisms about Pimax's customer support.
SweViver, Now that you work with pimax developers and pimax has the best resolution panels, what's your thoughts on making vr glasses with highest resolution panels possible just for watching movies, 3d movies, 360 and 180 degree videos? How cheap would those glasses be without all the parts needed for serious gaming? How about even making pimax modular? It's too expensive for many of us, maybe if first buying version for movies as i said and later one could buy easily attachable module to add gaming capabilities.
@@SweViver Getting a hold of a Rift S and/or Quest with Link; would make for a good comparison with the Artisan Martin. They're all targeting the same market segment, and would be of interest to VR Newbies; trying to make their first time buying decision. ;0)

Nice videos, thanks. Now, let's see if Pimax doesn't delay our preorders (more?) and our stretch goals from the kickstarter. Still looking forward to watching some videos with and without VRSS and to know more about the eyetracking solution.
Now that looks finally acceptable. I had had the problem that I can actually see the RGB subpixels with my old htc vive and also the quest, which really annoyes me. with the old displays I cand of had the feeling playing old C64 games because of that. good that better displays coming out. Sadly most reviews are not showing this well enough, so thanks for the video
And fantastic job. This appears to have been done with great care. Something I've noted is that some HMD's make black on white text very legible, but white on black looks awful and vice versa.
So let's see if I'm getting this straight: 1) the pimax 8kx is great and better than the Index while being compatible with the same controllers and satellites; in turn it's very expensive and we don't know when we can actually get one. 2) the hp reverb is just as good and less expensive, but it's not compatible with the best controllers and not suitable for room scale games and experiences, being basically into the windows mixed reality eco-system, so to speak (could be a great choice if you're just into vehicle simulators, though) 3) the valve index is a nice compromise (and probably my final choice, for now) since it has acceptable readability and FOV, while being compatible with the best stuff, surely available soon (hope the restock is really close) and costs like the best pimax, but with everything you will need included. I'll probably get the Index and then the Reverb sometime later this year, by the time they resolve the availability problem Pimax will probably be surpassed by the next gen HMDs anyway 🤷🏻♂️
I'd love to see a comparison between the 8kx and the XTAL. I know the price difference is huge but you can run the XTAL without a billion dollar computer. It seems like lens improvements greatly outperform screen resolution improvements. I think it would really shock a lot of people seeing a 1440p headset without super sampling completely destroy the 8kx in terms of clarity.
Yeah the screens and general tech in VR is now matured enough with the exception of the lenses. Fresnel lenses are actually quite terrible lenses to use.
Wow, Index is really keeping up despite the much lower resolution. Goes to show it's not only resolution that matters, but also the lenses. Reverb is just one giant cromatic abberation and pimax 8k looks like a joke.
Watching the AC video, I can't see any hint of async reprojection. Can I ask if this was engaged at the time, or if the game was actually running at a framerate high enough to not need it? I'm a Reverb owner who plays DCS, but the reprojection artefacts are unbearable for me, so I don't fly in VR. Even the fastest PC is limited to 45fps, and the WMR reprojection leads to horrible ghosting and stutters unless you run at extremely low detail. I'd love to see the new Pimax through-the-lens in DCS with good quality gfx settings and resolution, especially looking sideways out of the cockpit. In the meantime can you talk about the DCS experience?
With these images it looks like the Valve Index looks better the the Pimax 5k+ while I thought it was the other way around... So @SweViver what is your thought on that.. Also when can we get hands on a Pimax 8KX in Europe / Netherlands? Cheers!
Amazing review. Gives lots of opinion, very nice detailed. I have Samsung Odyssey and as i see Pimax 8KX is the way to go when the price goes down. Or something similar comes out. Thanks. So i will play half life alyx with my hmd for now.
The biggest problem with these high-res headsets is the GPU you need to maintain the resolution at min. 90fps. Even with ongoing GPU generations we need Eye Tracking + Foveated Rendering in VR.
Any official word on when an 8KX order would be shipped? I currently have the 8KX Deluxe Headphone in my Pimax shopping cart and will hit that "Confirm Order" button as soon as I do. ;-) I've had the 5K Plus XR and the 8K and loved each unit. Now I'm ready for the best that Pimax has to offer!
I enjoy combat flight sims, and VR makes flight sims come alive, but spotting targets etc was almost impossible with the blur in the distance. Is the resolution of the new 8kx headset equivalent to atleast a 1080p monitor.
no ? the question is how far do you have eyes from him, count how many fov covers and then divide 170fov by what you came out then multiply it by its resolution it will come out how much HMD should have. I think my 47 inch tv with 80cm covers about 45 fov so for me it's ~ 7200x5000 per eye.
Will resolution settings in game have to be lower because of increased fov with pimax over the index? Is it still like a divers mask which I feel in index.
And what is the rig we need for make games like asseto corsa ( in the video ) to run smoothly ? I will not buy the 8Kx until the foveated tracking module is ready . AND, when available, can you make a comparison with the FTM equiped versus "vanilla" version of the 8Kx plesae ?
Please re-take the HP reverb pics using the newest WMR for SteamVR, I remember the original pics were using a version that was known to be blurry, I'd be interested to see the comparison with the reverb at its best vs 8K X. Thanks!
@@laartwork He already has one, the issue was that at the time he was testing, there was a bug with Windows that caused it to run at a lower resolution than native even when at 100% supersampling. That has since been fixed so if he tests it now, it should be higher clarity.
Is there a technical difference between the 8K Plus and the Vision 8K Plus with the new "soft" plastic overcoat or is it just that and the slightly better ergonomy?
Hey SweViver, I loved your video on XTAL and based on this video the 8kx seems to getting close the quality of that $5,000 headset for a much more attractive price. If you are allowed to comment unbiased on what you feel about the difference between those two headsets (not considering the price difference), how close is the 8kx really to the phenomenal performance and image quality of the XTAL?
I want to see more pictures like the end. What you actually see not micro shots close up why does that matter. I wanna know what it actually looks like
Hi Sweviver! I actually wonder about deformation on the edge of the lens, it is the same as the others pimax, any improvement or fix for this? Because before buying an index, I've been talking to several people selling there pimax cause it induce motionsickness for them in comparaison to the their OG vive...
@@zmalitas it's at 75hz since displayport 1.4 can't send two 4k signals at 90hz. The only chance we have of the pimax 8kx doing native 4k at 90hz is if it had displayport 2.0, but sadly not a single GPU has a 2.0 port since it isnt coming out until likely q3 to q4 2020.
What system specifications ...CPU, RAM, etc... were you using for this demo and especially for the AC running at the end? I was immediately aware of the smoothness at which it ran with a large grid.
Really unnecessary to fire up ur struggle with MRTV and namecalling him to strengthen ur position. So obvious u wanna be right no matter what. Are u? Does it matter? Not rly. In the end its just negative vibrations. Hell, we are all enthusiasts. There is no need for politics on either side. Lets just cheer this impressive new piece of hardware! I rly want Pimax to get this done properly and u to regain ur alltime-happiness. Flawless cam shots btw. Keep it up!
IMHO It is a different between German and Chinese mindset. MRTV, he should think pimax infringe on his freedom because Pimax request him out of formal documents. However in Pimax perspective, it is like a custom for tester. Personally, I dont understand why MRTV made such public videos for mass. It is too much. They can manage about it themselves. If he don't agree with new request, he can give back the new unit to Pimax. It is a simple thing. They can manage about it in diplomatic method. Making a such assaulting video is like a declare war.
@SweViver at 3:24 is that an error in labeling or something? The 8K+ is the only one that is basically unreadable to me and the pixels look way too large.
@@ExtremCoxer What I was seeing didn't match up to all the other comparisons in this video though. But I just looked at the same segment on a different computer and it looks way better on this monitor. Also, if I don't fullscreen the video the 8K+ part of that shot is all kinds of screwed up! Wish I could post a screen cap LOL it's crazy looking. I don't have any native 4K monitors, but... whoa. Yeah this looks totally different depending on what resolution I set the video, and depending on the resolution of my screen, and whether or not it's full screen. On my laptop the 8k+ shot looked worse than Vive at that timestamp, but not on this screen. Only that test seems to vary like that depending on those things though, the flight sim test looks basically the same regardless of any of those things. Science is confusing. =P
Can it be that the SDE lines of 8K+ (and more in the case of 8KX) get lightened by the light of the adjacent pixels? The SDE appears to be fading in the lighter areas.
I'm not too impressed by the jump from 4K to 8K. For my money, I'll take the Index with the resolution cranked to 200% any day. Somehow Valve made a 1600p headset look like 4K and I hope the Index 2 has the same screen style.
200% in just the SteamVR home or in all games? Honestly I'm not even sure if I can tell the difference between 100%, 150%, and 200% in the SteamVR home with my Index, and I have an RTX 3080 with a 5600x to be able to run it flawlessly.

I hope to see you soon in Amasterdam again, in February :) Will let you know!!!
Great comparison. It gives good understanding of the clarity of the view. I’d like to see more about how the contrast and black levels are between headsets. I have 5k+ and very much interested if there is improvement in contrast in newer models.
50% improvement on the panels... but not OLED quality
@@laartwork have you tried an Index? How do the black levels compare?
I hated the black levels in the Index. This makes me think I should go for the 5K XR, but I'm hoping Pimax release a new XR version.
@@zackmack7044 MRTV said that the Artisan was better in every way than the Index in his videos he did not long ago.
From a distance the 5k+ actually looks very sharp, but lots of screen door. 8kx Looks great!
Just based on the skyrim shot
Uff shots fired at MRTV xD
Very respectful shots
Just a statement, that applies to both me and the other 3 guys.
HP refuses to replace my v1 with a v2 :(
@@SweViver At least you got a V1.
The Pimax headsets are lighter than other headsets lol. that's the funny thing.
Hey Martin, I really appreciate the content. Sebastian's video yesterday was really quite toxic. While sebastian was almost fine, the comment section was actual AIDs. That was the first time I've seen the fact that people hate you. Just keep doing what you're doing.
since martin works for pimax the hate swapped a bit over to him, there may be other reasons aswell, like he isn't 100% honest but the point is that the company does such a bullshit sometimes, like you saw what they did on sebastian
like on their website: 8k+ 3840x2160 *2 -still nothing about upscale to read there
200° fov irritating data - they mean diagonal fov but don't write it, everyone else is using Horizontal who the heck is using diagonal... that's just such a filthy move
the name 8k... it's not even 8k it's 4k... since one eye is only recieving 4k and you need 4x4k for 8k...
lying about release/shipping/rewards and all the backer problems
well... the support of course... and all the other shit they have done, but i guess you already knew all that !?
not true everybody showing diagonal FOV in marketing specs
Very nice.
Not bad but I want to tell Pimax to keep improving graphic through the lenses. Way better graphics though then other VR
Looks amazing.
Very beautiful.
Wow the Index looks way better than most of the other Pimax headsets. The only one just slightly better is the 8KX and not by much. I am looking forward to getting one now.
WOW! The 8KX is WAY ahead! 😮
Coming online and at home later, these time in the evenings are just messy :)
The difference looks quite large at 2:40. 8K+ also looks much better than Index there.
It's a difference having tried both.. but mainly the FOV is a giant leap from Index.
@@dtz1000 3:37 was for me the biggest difference in this video.
Looks freaking dope...
Eyecandy! :)
Wow! That looks amazing! When they include inside-out tracking, I won't hesitate in buy one...
Wow, i wish I had the extra money to buy a super computer and this state of the art VR headset.. It does look very impressive and seems to be the new king of VR headsets in the consumer market.
Why no vids from the Artisan ?
Coming soon!
i would totally buy one of these as my next VR headset. btw why do you not compare oculus rift with pimax? serious question.
You mean Rift S? Because I hesitated and never bought one. And the old Rift looks almost as bad as HTC Vive in comparison, so there is no point...
@@SweViver Getting a hold of a Rift S and/or Quest with Link; would make for a good comparison with the Artisan Martin. They're all targeting the same market segment, and would be of interest to VR Newbies; trying to make their first time buying decision. ;0)
I would have loved to see the quest in this comparison.
@@Sanddesert Wouldn't really be fair to the Quest, given the HUGE price difference.
But the Artisan, is targeting the same market to a large degree, so that one would make sense to me.
Sadly most reviews are not showing this well enough, so thanks for the video
please test also IL2 BATTLE OF STALINGRAD etc.
Will do!
This is amazing!
And fantastic job. This appears to have been done with great care. Something I've noted is that some HMD's make black on white text very legible, but white on black looks awful and vice versa.
So let's see if I'm getting this straight:
1) the pimax 8kx is great and better than the Index while being compatible with the same controllers and satellites; in turn it's very expensive and we don't know when we can actually get one.
2) the hp reverb is just as good and less expensive, but it's not compatible with the best controllers and not suitable for room scale games and experiences, being basically into the windows mixed reality eco-system, so to speak (could be a great choice if you're just into vehicle simulators, though)
3) the valve index is a nice compromise (and probably my final choice, for now) since it has acceptable readability and FOV, while being compatible with the best stuff, surely available soon (hope the restock is really close) and costs like the best pimax, but with everything you will need included.
Yeah tried three XTAL 8k and it had bad distortion and scaling. People were not impressed. I am sure they can go back to the drawing board.
currently hoping to save enough money for the pimax 12k (if it ever releases) plus a rtx 4090 build
Best video
Interesting to see the much cheaper HP Reverb match the 8KX in many of the tests.
In your opinion what is the best Pimax headset
I enjoy combat flight sims, and VR makes flight sims come alive, but spotting targets etc was almost impossible with the blur in the distance. Is the resolution of the new 8kx headset equivalent to atleast a 1080p monitor.
no ? the question is how far do you have eyes from him, count how many fov covers and then divide 170fov by what you came out then multiply it by its resolution it will come out how much HMD should have.
I think my 47 inch tv with 80cm covers about 45 fov so for me it's ~ 7200x5000 per eye.
+1 for politcal correct explanation :P
Thanks!
They need to send him one. They are very similar since they have the same resolution. Four that test macro is moot. It should be an FOV comparison.
@@laartwork He already has one, the issue was that at the time he was testing, there was a bug with Windows that caused it to run at a lower resolution than native even when at 100% supersampling. That has since been fixed so if he tests it now, it should be higher clarity.
I'm waiting until I can get a sweviver coupon discount before I buy it.
Yes, discount for his subscribers would be great
Im working on it :)
@@SweViver at least free Ridgid headstrap. $100 is too much
amazing...
Is there a technical difference between the 8K Plus and the Vision 8K Plus with the new "soft" plastic overcoat or is it just that and the slightly better ergonomy?
Please do 8KX vs REVERB2 through the lens
Hey SweViver, I loved your video on XTAL and based on this video the 8kx seems to getting close the quality of that $5,000 headset for a much more attractive price. If you are allowed to comment unbiased on what you feel about the difference between those two headsets (not considering the price difference), how close is the 8kx really to the phenomenal performance and image quality of the XTAL?
How do you account for the differences between the 8KX and the 8K+/HP Reverb given they have the same resolution?
if the primax 8kx was the same price as the index id definitely go for it
I want to see more pictures like the end. What you actually see not micro shots close up why does that matter. I wanna know what it actually looks like
Ibwould really like to know the exact weight of the 8kx/5ksuper. Both with and without the new hard strap.
I need to know if the 8K plus has bad lens distortion especially when you move your head for the wide field-of-view.
Hi Sweviver! I actually wonder about deformation on the edge of the lens, it is the same as the others pimax, any improvement or fix for this? Because before buying an index, I've been talking to several people selling there pimax cause it induce motionsickness for them in comparaison to the their OG vive...
We have come a long way from Gen 1 HMD.
Indeed :)
but, is it 75hz? Gen1 was 90(at least on oculus)
Gen1 vive is also 90hz.
@@zmalitas you can always wait for the pimax 8kX+ or something when that has dp 2.0 so it can do 4k 120hz with how much bandwidth it has.
Looks fantastic, when is it being released?
End of March... first to the 400ish original backers. If you preorder it may be late April/May.
I’m waiting till amazon sell them in not dealing with pi max again there customer service is no good
Upon pre-order now, most likely early May
What system specifications ...CPU, RAM, etc... were you using for this demo and especially for the AC running at the end? I was immediately aware of the smoothness at which it ran with a large grid.
Is there still a screen door effect? The vive has kinda made me dislike vr with how bad it is
Not on the 8KX.
On the 8KX you wont see it with your eyes. A camera and macro lens can easily see it though :)
@@SweViver That is good news. Thanks for the reply. I will keep that in mind.
What is graphics card are you using? I just can’t seem to get smooth FPS for AC
Keep it up!
Sebastians decision, not mine. He is free to do any video he want on 8KX except full review, just like I can't do a review yet.
Thanks btw!
@@lathander9123 the request was just to say in the video it is not a final review.
@SweViver at 3:24 is that an error in labeling or something? The 8K+ is the only one that is basically unreadable to me and the pixels look way too large.
Trip Rodriguez - that might be the result of an upscaled signal. That's probably why people didn't like the original 8k.
I really want to demo these vr headsets. Does anybody know when they will be on the West Coast?
We will be at GDC in march :)
i'm actually the most surprised by the index in this. I always thought my 5k+ would be way better than the index visually
The SDE is better on the Index, thats no secret :) But the FOV though...
Why are you making the index and 8k look better than the 5k plus ?
Because their better..
Are lenses still being tweaked at this time or are they finalized?

@@SweViver Phone their technical support line - they were very good to send out a replacement that very day, that arrived 2 days later. Then they provided a pickup of the faulty unit. I originally tried by emailing sales support who weren't any good and recommended me phoning technical support - that proved much more effective.
The new unit (manufactured in November) is a notably brighter and better colour saturated display. Quite an improvement to SDE on it too, from an already minimal amount.
