  • We live in a magical time.
Not happy with the available oil filter take-offs available for the Ford Duratec platform, I've decided to make my own. Designed some test parts and printed them in PLA, when I was happy enough with the test pieces I kicked the final design over to PCBWay to have it printed up in aluminum with their SLM (Selective Laser Melting) process machines.
There are a few finishing steps I'll need to do myself but those should be relatively quick and easy.

Super rewarding to see something you designed in the real world like that!

Very nice! Cintered Al is good enough for most applications. Not everything needs to be made of 6061-T6 or 7075. As far as costs go how much to make one unit, ten units, a hundred units? Do they give a discount on multiples?

It was $140 for a one off print. I didn’t look at the pricing for a low-volume run, tho.

@@JQLSpec so for a one off that's actually really good. Some day when we all have metal printers in the house the cost will be pennies on the dollar but until then we have to pay and to be honest that's pretty good. I hope that design works for you.

For a one-off custom part, not all that much. PCBWay charged me $140USD for the print. A similar but not customized to my needs part from Mountune is $141USD, DANST charges $118USD for a milled block with BSP ports instead of ORB and NPTs. All in all, to get something suited for my needs, it's a pretty good deal.
